  • The panels are used as a composite part of the completed deck. They replace the main bottom transverse deck reinforcement and also serve as a form surface for the cast-in-place concrete upper layer that contains the top of deck reinforcement. However, in order to apply the precast panels to bridges properly, it is necessary to fully understand the structural characteristics of joint in precast panels. Particularly, since the bridge deck is under repeated loads such as traffic loads, fatigue behavior and characteristics of joint should be investigated. In this paper, fatigue tests of composite deck with shear ties and loop joints were conducted. The fatigue tests were conducted with an application of repeated loading and wheel loading. Test results were analyzed to examine the current design code for fatigue of reinforcement bar and serviceability under repeated loading.

  • Fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) sheets have been successfully used to retrofit a number of existing concrete buildings and structures because of their excellent properties (high strength, light weight and high durability). Bond characteristics between FRP sheets and concrete should be investigated to ensure an effective retrofitting system. RC structures strengthened with FRP sheets are often subjected to cyclic load (traffic, seismic, temperature, etc.). This research addresses a local bond stress-slip relationship under cyclic loading conditions for the FRP-concrete interface. 18 specimens were prepared with three types of FRP sheets (aramid, carbon, and polyacetal) and two types of sheet layer(one or two). The characteristics of bond stress-slip were verified through experimental results on load-displacement relationship.

  • Direct method developed for the inelastic analysis of planar frames subjected to monotonic loads is extended to cyclic loads. Two frame elements for Direct Method(inelastic truss and inelastic beam) are developed. The accuracy and reliability of the preposed method is verified by comparing the analysis results of example with step-by-step analysis. Direct Method is superior to Step-by-step analysis in view of reliability of solution and analysis cost.

  • For the reliability analysis of offshore guyed towers for large storm events, failure of an anchor pile of the guyline system is investigated. Two failure modes of the anchor pile due to the extreme and the cyclic wave loadings are considered. The probability of failure due to the extreme anchor load is evaluated based on the first excursion probability analysis. Degradation of the pile capacity due to cyclic loadings is evaluated by using empirical fatigue curves for a driven pile in clay. The numerical results indicate that the failure probability due to the cyclic loadings can be as large as the risk due to extreme loading, particularly for the cases with the low design safety level of the pile strength and the large uncertainty of the pile resistance.

  • Scale model tests were performed to investigate the seismic behavior and capacity of reinforced concrete piers that were not detailed for seismic load. The prototype pier is of solid circular section. Additional lateral reinforcing bars were not provided that might be required for the confinement. Two kinds of reinforcement details are considered for the vertical longitudinal reinforcing bars: lap spliced and continuous. In the case of lap spliced model all the longitudinal bars were lap spliced at the same height in the bottom plastic hinge zone. Three specimens were constructed and subjected to quasi-static cyclic lateral loading while the vertical load held constant. Non-ductile failure modes were observed in the test of lap spliced models but limited ductile behavior was observed in the test of a continuous longitudinal reinforcement model.

  • Many researches have been conducted to describe the elastic and inelastic behavior of H-shaped beams with web openings, and were generally concentrated on the uniaxial loading conditions. With previous research results, the formulae for the design of beams with web openings, considering local buckling, have been proposed by Darwin. Although the formulae are so simple and useful to apply to real situations, it needs more research on cyclic loading conditions. In this experimental study, a total of seven H-shaped beams with circular web openings under cyclic loading conditions were investigated. The dimension criteria were based on the formulae proposed by Darwin. The suitability of the existing design formulae, the effects of plastic hinges on beams with web openings, and the local bucking around the web openings to the beam strength under cyclic loading were also investigated through by the observations of the behavior of these beams with various dimensional openings.

  • One of the reasons for brittle failure in reinforced concrete structures subjected to severe earthquake is due to large slip between reinforcing steel and concrete. This study aims to evaluate effects of deformation patterns of ribbed reinforcing bars on bond under cyclic loading. Bond test specimens were constructed with machined bars to test the newly developed reinforcing bars with high relative rib areas. The degree of confinement is also another key parameter in this bond test. From the test results under monotonic and cyclic loading, bond strength and stiffness were evaluated. Bond strength and bond stiffness increase as relative rib areas under cyclic loading for specimens highly confined by transverse reinforcement. The increase rates of the bond performance under cyclic loading are larger than those of specimens under monotonic loading. The developed bars with high relative rib areas will contribute for better bond performance for reinforced concrete structures subjected to severe seismic loadings.
