  • Granular soils having a large particle size have been used as a filling material in the construction of foundation, harbor, dam, and so on. Consequently, the shear behavior of this granular soil plays a key role in respect of stability of structures. For example, soil particle crushing occurring at the interface between structure and soil and/or within soil mass can cause a disturbance of ground characteristics and consequently induce issues in respect of stability of structures. In order to investigate the shear behavior according to an existence and nonexistence of particle crushing, numerical analyses were conducted by using the DEM (Discrete Element Method)-based software program PFC2D (Particle Flow Code). By dividing soil particle bonding model into crushing model and noncrushing model, total four particle bonding models were simulated and their results were compared. Noncrushing model included one ball model and clump model, and crushing model included cluster model and Lobo-crushing model. The combinations of soil particle followed the research results of Lobo-Guerrero and Vallejo (2005) which were composed of eight circles. The results showed that the friction angle was in order of clump model > cluster model > one ball model. The particle bonding model compared to one ball model and noncrushing model compared to crushing model showed higher shear strength. It was also concluded that the model suggested by Lobo-Guerrero and Vallejo (2005) is not appropriate to simulate the soil particle crushing.

  • A simulated rainfall system was built, and the unsaturated characteristics were examined by execution of simulated rainfall system test and soil water characteristic curve cell test(SWCC Cell Test) under the various rainfall and slope conditions. With the results, the applicability of infiltration behavior under rainfall and soil water characteristic curve models to the unsaturated weathered granite soil was examined. At the results of comparison the volumetric water content and matric suction measured in the wetting process(under rainfall) with those in the drying process(leaving as it was) of the simulated rainfall system, the volumetric water content showed a difference of $2{\sim}5%$ and matric suction of about $3{\sim}10\;kPa$, indicating the occurrence of hysteresis. In addition, the difference was relatively larger in matric suction than in the volumetric water content, and this tells that the hysteresis behavior is larger in matric suction. When the soil water characteristic curve derived from measurements in simulated rainfall system test were compared with those from the soil water characteristic curve cell test, both methods produced soil water characteristic curves close each other in the wetting process and the drying process, but in both, there was a difference between results obtained from in the wetting process and those from in the drying process. Thus, when soil water characteristic curves are rationally applied to the design and stability analysis considering of the properties of unsaturated soil, it is considered desirable to apply the soil water characteristic curve of the wetting process to the wetting process, and that of the drying process to the drying process.

  • The purpose of this study is liquefaction phenomenon was simulated using the 1g shaking table test. Analysis of liquefaction and Re-liquefaction behavior according to the ground conditions was analyzed when an embankment exists above the ground. The soil used in the experiment was silica sand and the ground composition was a liquefied layer of 50cm (Case 1), a non-liquefied layer of 17.5cm and a liquefied layer of 32.5cm (Case 2). The embankment was formed by fixing the height of 10cm and the slope of the slope at a ratio of 1:1.8. For seismic waves, excitation of a 5Hz sine wave was performed for 8 seconds, and a total of 5 case excitations were performed. In Case 1, it was confirmed that liquefaction occurred at all depths during the first vibration excitation at the free-field and that liquefaction did not occur at all depths except 5cm at the third vibration excitation. At the center of the embankment, liquefaction occurred up to a depth of 20cm during the first vibration excitation, and it was confirmed that liquefaction did not occur at all depths except for a depth of 5cm during the second vibration excitation.

  • The optical fiber cable acting as a sensor was embedded in the underground research tunnel and portal area in order to monitor their stability and the spatial temperature variation. This system includes two types of sensing function to monitor the distributed strain and temperature along the line, where sensor cable is installed, not a point sensing. According to the results of one year monitoring around the KURT, there is no significant displacement or movement at the tunnel wall and portal slope. However, it would be able to aware of some phenomena as an advance notice at the tunnel wall which indicates the fracturing in rockmass and shotcrete fragmentation before rock falls accidently as well as movement of earth slope. The measurement resolution for rock mass displacement is 1 mm per 1 m and it covers 30 km length with every 1m interval in minimum. In temperature, the cable measures the range of $-160{\sim}600^{\circ}C$ with $0.01^{\circ}C$ resolution according to the cable types. This means that it would be applicable to monitoring system for the safe operation of various kinds of facilities having static and/or dynamic characteristics, such as chemical plant, pipeline, rail, huge building, long and slim structures, bridge, subway and marine vessel. etc.

  • In this study, landslide of debris flow occurred at 51 sites around Daeryounsan located in between Chuncheon-si and Hongcheon-gun during July in 2013 were investigated in field and behavior characteristics of debris flow were analyzed on the basis of records of rainfall and site investigation. According to debris flow types of channelized and hill slope, location and slope angle of initiation and deposit zone, and width and depth of erosion were investigated along entire runout of debris flow. DEM(Digital Elevation Model) of Daeryounsan was constructed with digital map of 1:5,000 scale. Land slide hazard was estimated using SINMAP(Stability INdex MAPping) and the predicted results were compared with field sites where debris flow occurred. As analyzed results, for hill slope type of debris flow, predicted sites were quite comparable to actual sites. On the other hand, for channelized type of debris flow, debris flow occurrence sites were predicted by using stability index associated with topographic wetness index. As analyzed results of 4 different conditions with the parameter T/R, Hydraulic transmissivity/Effective recharge rate, proposed by NRCS (Natual Resources Conservation Service), predicted results showed more or less different actual sites and the degree of hazard tended to increase with decrease of T/R value.

  • This study evaluated the stability and deformation subsea foundation after implementation of the contaminant isolation method by covering the contaminated materials using Zeolite and sands under subsea condition. The appropriate contaminant adsorption materials used in this study was selected as Zeolite based on the existing research results due to its efficiency. Safety (or stability) was evaluated by calculation and to analyze deformation after completing the contaminant isolation method. The minimum safety factors from slope stability analyses results were 30.1 and 11.2 depending on subsea submerged conditions and the amount of the maximum primary consolidation settlement from consolidation analysis results was 209.2 mm. In addition, change of consolidation amount with increasing consolidation time was evaluated based on consolidation degree.

  • Recently, because of increasing in downpour and typhoon, which are caused by climate changes, those sedimentation disasters, such as landslide and debris flow, have become frequent. Those sedimentation disasters take place in natural slope. In order to predict debris flow damage range within wide area, the response model is more appropriate than numerical analysis. However, to make a prediction using Random Walk Model, the regional parameters is needed to be decided, since the regional environments conditions are not always same. This random Walk Model is a probability model with easy calculation method, and simplified slope factor. The objective of this study is to calculate the optimal parameters of Random Walk Model for Umyeon mountain in Seoul, where the large debris flow has occurred in 2011. Debris flow initiation zones and sedimentation zones were extracted through field survey, aerial photograph and visual reading of debris flow before and after its occurrence via LiDAR DEM.

  • Biotite and its weathering Products in the weathering Profile of Andong granite were examined using X-ray diffraction, chemical analysis, and electron microscopy. Major weathering product of biotite was oxidized biotite, which is decomposed into kaolinite in the upper part. Discrete vermiculite or hydrobiotite was not detected although minor vermiculite (5%) was randomly interstratified with oxidized biotite. Excess positive charge induced by iron oxidation was balanced by release of Fe (16%) and Mg (12%) from octahedral site and K (13%) from interlayer site. After slight chemical and structural modification induced by iron oxidation, oxidized biotite persists through the weathering profiles with partial decomposition in the upper part of the profile. Formation environments and dissolution experiments of oxidized biotite highly resistant to weathering are required to understand the elemental behavior in the surface environments on the biotite-bearing bedrocks.

  • Rock fracture mechanics has been widely applied to blasting, hydraulic fracturing, rock slope and many other practical problems in rock engineering. But a measuring method for the fracture toughness of rock, one of the mort important parameters in fracture mechanics as an intrinsic property of rock, has not been yet well established. To obtain mode I rock fracture toughness, the more favorable disc-typed specimens such as CCNBD, SCB, chevron-notched SCB and BDT were used in this study. Rock fracture toughness under mixed-mode and mode II conditions was measured by using the STCA applied to the CCNBD specimen. Size effects such as specimen thickness, diameter and notch length on fracture toughness were investigated. From the mixed-mode results, fracture envelops were obtained by applying various regression curves. The mixed-mode results were also compared with three mixed-mode failure criteria. In each fracture toughness test, acoustic emission was measured to get the data for determining the load levels of different crack propagation patterns.

  • The structural behaviour of rock mass structure, such as tunnel or slope is critically dependent on the various characteristics of discontinuities. Therefore, it is important to survey and analyze discontinuities correctly for the design and construction of rock mass structure. One inevitable Procedure of discontinuity survey and analysis is joint set identification from a lot of raw directional joint data. The identification procedure is generally done by a graphical method. This type of analysis has some shortcomings such as subjective identification results, inability to use extra information on discontinuity, and so on. In this study, a computer program for joint set identification based on the fuzzy clustering algorithm was implemented and tested using two kinds of joint data. It was confirmed that fuzzy clustering method is effective and valid for joint set identification and estimation of mean direction and degree of clustering of huge joint data through the applications.
