This paper presents a comparative study of reinforced soil slope by using LEM and SSR-FEM. Current analysis methods for reinforced soil wall are based on LEM. SSR-FEM assumes a reduction of soil strength by a factor to reach a critical state prior to failure based on continuum mechanics. In this study the comparisons are concerned with the factor of safety and the potential failure surface in reinforced soil wall. We investigated the stability of the reinforced soil wall with a slope of $60^{\circ}$ by LEM and SSR-FEM. The comparisons indicated good performance of the SSR-FEM on stability analysis of reinforce soil wall.

The accuracy of a limit equilibrium analysis of slope stability depends on the accuracy with which the strength properties and geometric conditions can be defined, and on the inherent accuracy of the method of analysis. Most of the slope stability analysis method have been computer coded, and this is a comparative study on the accuracy of these programs. Comparative analyses have shown that for the slopes with relatively simple conditions Host of the programs which are widely used in this country result in the same value of safety factor with an accuracy no worse than $\pm$5%. Similar results can be obtained from the examination of the several slope failure for which accurate information is available on the strength and geometric conditions of the earth slope. The critical failure surface, however, can be different from the actual slip surface, although nearly the same factors of safety are obtained from the analyses of each surface.
The two-dimensional (2D) analysis is widely used in geotechnical engineering for slope stability analysis assuming a plane-strain condition. It is implicitly assumed that the slip surface is infinitely wide, and thus three-dimensional (3D) end effects are negligible because of the infinite width of the slide mass. The majority of work on this subject suggests that the 2D factor of safety is conservative (i.e. lower than the 'true' 3D factor of safety). Recently, the 3D finite element method (FEM) became more attractive due to the progress of computational tools including the computer hardware and software. This paper presents the numerical analyses on rotational mode and translational mode slopes using the 2D and 3D FEM as well as 2D limit equilibrium methods (LEM). The results of the parametric study on the slope stability due to mesh size, dilatency angle, boundary conditions, stress history and model dimensions change are analysed. The analysis showed that the factor of safety in 3D analysis is always higher than that in the 2D analysis and the discrepancy of the slope width in W direction on the factor of safety is ignored if the roller type of W direction conditions is applied.
Multilayer perceptron neural network was trained to determine the factor of safety and slip surface of the slope. Slope geometry is a simple slope based on Korean design standards, and the case of dry and existing groundwater levels are both considered, and the properties of the soil composing the slope are considered to be sandy soil including fine particles. When curating the data required for model training, slope stability analysis was performed in 42,000 cases using the limit equilibrium method. Steady-state seepage analysis of groundwater was also performed, and the results generated were applied to slope stability analysis. Results show that the multilayer perceptron model can predict the factor of safety and failure arc with high performance when the slope's physical properties data are input. A method for quantitative validation of the model performance is presented.
The target of this study is large scale rock slope collapsed by around 7 pm on August, 2012, which is located at ${\bigcirc}{\bigcirc}$ limestone quarries of Gangneung city, Gangwondo. The slope prior to the collapse is formed as the height of about 200 m and the average inclination of $45^{\circ}$. The estimated amount of the collapse is about $1,500,000m^3$ with respect to the slope after the collapse. Geotechnical and field investigations such as boring, geophysical prospecting, surface geological survey, geological lineaments, borehole imaging, metric 3D imaging, experimental and field test, mining work by year, and daily rainfall were performed to find the cause of rock slope failure. Various analyzes using slope mass rating, stereonet projection, limit equilibrium method, continuum and non-continuum model were conducted to check of the stability of the slope. It is expected that the cause of slope failure from the results of various analysis and survey is due to the combined factors such as topography, rainfall, rock type and quality, discontinuities, geo-structural characteristics as the limestone cavity and fault zones, but the failure of slope in case of the analysis without the limestone cavity is not occurred. Safe factor of 0.66 was obtained from continuum analysis of the slope considering the limestone cavity, so the ultimate causes of slope failure is considered to be due to the influence of limestone cavity developed along fault zone.

As Korea is a mountaneous country, many cut slopes are formed along the highways and in housing projects, by cutting through the layers which are composed of shallow soil depth and the underlying hard layers with different degrees of weathering. Such slopes are often foiled by heavy rainfall, and thus its effects on the slope instability are described in detail in. this paper. The importance of discontinuties on the slope stability as well as the effects of rainfall is emphasized for high quality design of cut slopes.
A numerical analysis was performed of the seepage from and stability of a mine waste-dump slope in Imgi, Busan, considering rainfall intensity. The 40-45° slope angle of the waste dump is relatively steep, and the depth of the waste dump down to bedrock is 7-8 m. The groundwater level was 6.6 m below the surface. Various laboratory tests on samples obtained from the waste dump were performed to determine the input data for seepage and stability analyses of the waste-dump slope during rainfall. The results of seepage analysis for various rainfall intensities using the SEEP/W program show that the wetting front moved down with increasing rainfall duration. When the rainfall intensity was > 50 mm/ hour and the duration was > 24 hours, the waste dump became fully saturated because the wetting front reached the groundwater level. The results of slope stability analysis coupled with seepage analysis using the SLOPE/W program show that the safety factor of the slope decreased as the wetting front moved down due to rainfall infiltration. After continuous rainfall for 5-6 hours, the safety factor of the slope suddenly decreased but then recovered and converged. The sudden decrease was induced by an increase in pore-water pressure and a decrease in matric suction down to a certain depth as the wetting front approached the potential sliding surface.
This paper presents the results of investigation of the rainstorm induced landslides occurred in the districts of Yongin, Ansung and Osan on July 21st 1991. More than two thousand and sirs hundred landsilides took place during or after a 3-t hours heavy rainfall and about 466 ha mountain slopes were affected by slope failures. The result of study on the effect of-iainfall on landslides shows that landslides began to occur where daily and maximum hourly rainfall exceeded 114mm and 40mm respectively, and all districts (myun) where maximum hourly rainfall exceeded 62mm were affected by landslides. The morphological study on landslides on Talbongsan area reveals that, by Walker's classi fication using D IL(failure depth ratio), 50% of the landslides were classified as flows, 20% of them as translational slides, and 30% were between flow and slide and there were few rotational slides. Over 90% of landslides tookplace at slopes of 20$^{\circ}$-40$^{\circ}$ in slope and 50m or shorter in length And more than 50% of the crown of slides locates at higher than 0.7 times of slope hight. Any differences between the kinds of tree in landslide resisting effects are shown in this case.
A probabilistic model for the progressive failure in a homogeneous soil slope consisting of strain-softening material is presented. The local safety margin of any slice above failure surface is assumed to follow a normal distribution. Uncertainties of the shear strength along potential failure surface are expressed by one-dimensional random field models. In this paper, only the case where failure initiates at toe and propagates up to the crest is considerd. The joint distribution of the safety margin of any two adjacent slices above the failure surface is assumed to be bivariate normal. The overall probability of the sliding failure is expressed as a product of probabilities of a series of conditional el.eats. Finally, the developed procedure has been applied in a case study to yield the reliability of a cut slope.
