  • Gypsum blocks with sixteen flaws have been prepared and tested in uniaxial compression. Results from these experiments are compared with observations from the same material with two and three flaws. The results indicate that the cracking pattern observed in specimens wish multiple flaws is analogous to the pattern obtained in specimens with two and three flaws such as initiation and propagation of wing, and secondary cracks and coalescence. Wing cracks initiate at an angle with the flaw and propagate in a stable manner towards the direction of maximum compression. Secondary cracks initiate and propagate in a stable manner. As the load is increased, secondary cracks may propagate in an unstable manner and produce coalescence. Two types of secondary cracks are observed: quasi-coplanar, and oblique secondary cracks. Coalescence is produced by the linkage of two flaws: wing and/or secondary cracks. From the sixteen flaws test, four types of coalescence are observed. Observed types of coalescence and initiation stress of wing and secondary crackle depend on flaw geometries, such as spacing, continuity, flaw inclination angle, ligament angle, and steppings.

  • A multichannel seismic profile from the southwestern margin of the Ulleung Basin, East Sea, was analysed in detail to interpret the middle to late Miocene sequence stratigraphic evolution of the area. A regressive package is overlying a transgressive package which, in turn, is underlain by older uplifted and deformed sedimentary layers. A prominent condensed section separates the regressive and transgressive packages. The transgressive package is characterized by onlapping onto the underlying uplifted and deformed strata. The regressive package contains six prograding sequences composed of seismically resolvable lowstand, highstand, and transgressive systems tracts. Most of the depositional sequences comprise lowstand systems tracts consisting of basin-floor fan, slope fan, and prograding complex. Potential reservoirs in the regressive package are turbidite sands in basin-floor fans, channel-fill sands and overbank sand sheets in slope fans, and incised valley-fill sands in the shelf. The shallow marine sands in transgressive packages are another type of reservoir. Detailed sequence stratigraphic analysis, seismic data reprocessing, and 3-D seismic survey are suggested for the successful hydrocarbon exploration in the study area.

  • According to the development of optical technology, the capacity of LIDAR equipments has been greatly improved to get rock mass characteristics precisely and accurately enough and it has been lightened and popularized so that it can be easily used in the field. In this study, we examined the applicability of roughness measurement for joints in a rock slope using LIDAR technique. A triangular irregular network was constructed using LIDAR and a patch, which is a plane structure of discontinuity on rock mass measured from LIDAR scanning, was extracted to estimate the roughness of the rock slope. Four different kinds of roughness parameters were analyzed to find out their correlation with JRC for various point intervals. Among them, $R_s$ parameter was used to measure the roughness of a patch. Regression analysis between four roughness parameters and JRC with respect to point interval was performed. All the roughness parameters decreased with the increase of point interval. In addition, the parameter value showed greater decrease for rougher surfaces. A method of roughness measurement using $R_s$ parameter on rock slope discontinuities was suggested which showed slight overestimation of the real roughness value.

  • The alpine grassland vegetation at the west slope of Cheungseuk-bong on Mt. Paektu was investigated by Penound-Howard's cover-degree method. The floristic composition of the alpine grassland from 1,800m altitude to the top of mountain were 30 species, 2 subspecies, and 3 varieties, and most of the plants were short(height 2∼13㎝) perennial herbs and shrubs. The highest cover degree of the species in the alpine grassland zone were Ligularia jamesii, Veratrum patulum and Thalictrum aquilegifolium (1,800∼2,l00m), Vaccnium uliginosum and Rhododendron aureum (2,100∼2,l00m), and Rhododendron aureum (2,300∼2,600m). Life form of the plants were 7 species of Chamaephyte, 27 species of Hernicryptophyte, and 1 species of Geophyte. Among the presented plants, 19 species were at flowering stage. Trollius hondoemsis, Trollius japonicus, Liguiaria jamesii and Lloydia serotina were peak at flowering.

  • During CHAOS (2003, 2006) and SSGH projects (2007), acoustic investigation including hydroacoustic (HA), side-scan sonar (SSS) and highresolution sparker seismic (HSS) surveys was carried out on the northeastern Sakhalin slope ($53^{\circ}56'\;N$, $143^{\circ}52'\;E$ to $54^{\circ}40'\;N$, $144^{\circ}32'\;E$). More than 130 methane seeps with high backscatter intensity are identified on SSS mosaic, which are well accompanied with gas flares in the water column on HA profiles and subbottom gas chimneys on HSS profiles. It is likely that that some seeps align along a NW strike parallel to the Lavrentiev Fault.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of vegetation on the cutting slope applied by vegetation system in the whole land. The engineering characteristics of slopes were investigated using the face mapping and physical tests. From the statistical methods, a relationship between a geologic stratum and degree of covering was independent. Therefore, the afforestation of slope was affected more by condition of vegetation as direction and opening of joints, and a topsoil state than by conventional classification of layer. It was concluded that the adjustable vegetation on the slope considering condition of geometric shape of slope, joint data and spontaneous type could make useful early afforestation.

  • As the portable information appliance is developed, the demand of flat panel display equipments and parts are steeply increased. Most of all, the applications of LCD such as LCD TV, monitor, digital camera, CNS(car navigation system) and game machine become diversified. With the result that the number of BLU production enterprise is increased and the research on the design of backlight with the superior optical properties is persistently in progress. In this study we developed the pattern design tools for CCFL(cold cathode flourescent lamp) backlight to improve the conventional pattern design environment in which the pattern is designed manually from the experience and the trial and error. For the verification of our research, we designed the light reflection surface patterns for a real model of backlight and we measured the brightness uniformity using the BM-7. From the brightness uniformity measurement, the BLU designed using the presented tool showed the tolerable performance only in the first try of pattern design rather than the fifth try of pattern design in case of the conventional pattern design.

  • The rock-carved standing Buddha triad in Seoak-dong is a large stone Buddha statue of the Unified Silla era (AD 676 to 935) in ancient Korea, built near the top of the southeastern side of mountain Seondosan in Gyeongju, is characterized by its locational importance, the powerful Amitabha and the gentle sculptural technique of the Bodhisattva. In particular, Amitabha Buddha in andesite rock slope with biotite granite pedestal and two Bodhisattva parallel made by alkali granites seems to express the dignity through the color and texture of the stones. In the Amitabha Buddha, deterioration characteristics are accelerating due to the combination of various joint systems, instability of the slopes and relaxation by the root pressure of plants occurring at the top. In addition, physical properties have deteriorated owing to the increase of discontinuous surfaces as joints, cracks and scalings, and the coverage of algae and lichen is also high. Therefore, deterioration degree in Buddha triad is accelerated due to the physical weathering characteristics from natural rock mass and various biological invasion.

  • Oegogae wetland is sub-alpine wetland which is formed in piedmont area in Jirisan National Park. Apparently Oegogae wetland seems to be well-protected wetland. Most alpine wetlands are located in the summit area, but Oegogae wetland is located in piedmont area which is transitional zone between the steep slope and relatively flat valley bottom. Oegogae wetland is active in terms of sedimentation and exceeds 1m in depth. Penetration tests show that composing material is soft such as peat and organic-rich sediment. Basal rock of the basin is gneiss and gneissic schist in general, which is good for the formation of wetland because those rocks are easy to form low permeability layer. Baseflow from the wetland takes control of the most of stream flow during the wet season and this is especially true during the dry season. Precipitation during the wet season increases water content and base flow from the wetland.

  • This work is to elucidate in typological aspect main geomorphological processes in the morphogenetic system of Mongolian steppe zone. Its morphogenesis manifest interaction of intense gelifraction and active erosion either by slope run-off or by wind. Intense gelifraction owes both to cold temperature regime with great amplitude, and to moisture associated with snow fall. Erosion of material produced by gelifraction is assured by surface run-off of summer rainfall and spring eolian activities. The geomorphological landscape sculptured by such morphogenetic processes manifest low-relief smooth slopes. This feature reveals that intense gelifraction keeps abreast with removal of weathering product by surface run-off and wind.
