A Study on the Effect on the New Teaching Strategy Facilitating Reflective Thinking in the Learning of the Particulate Nature of Matter (물질의 입자성 학습에서 반성적 사고를 촉진시키는 새로운 입자모델 교수전략의 효과 - 초등학교 예비교사를 대상으로 -)

  • The purpose of this study was to design the new teaching strategy based on the particulate model facilitating the reflective thinking (RE-PM) in the learning of the particulate nature of matter, and to investigate the effect of the new teaching strategy in compare with the traditional teaching strategy (TS-PM) after treating with new teaching strategy on preliminary teachers of elementary school. The problems of traditional teaching strategy are as follows: 1) Most of students didn't think the particulate model connected with practical material. 2) Most of students have a tendency of the rote memory on learning of the traditional particulate model. 3) The ratio of changing the view of continuous matter into the view of particulate nature of matter was very low, after learning the particulate model using of the traditional teaching strategy. The new teaching strategy facilitating the reflective thinking was more effective on the understanding of particulate nature of matter and the driving of motivation than the traditional teaching strategy in the learning of the particulate nature of matter.

Effects of Geography Class Using Taboo Games on Student's Learning (터부 게임을 활용한 지리수업이 학습에 미치는 영향)

  • This study is to analyze the effects of geography class using taboo games on developing student's ability to think. After playing taboo games in which students explain keyword without using presented taboo words, worksheets of participants were analyzed with interviews to demonstrate what kind of thinking skills are working. The results of the analyses are as follows. First, while divergent thinking is applied to students who explain keyword in taboo games, convergent thinking is applied to students who listen to and guess them. Second, as groups play a role as explainer or answerer in turn, they can learn divergent and convergent thinking together. Third, students seem to improve high-order thinking ability like decision-making, critical thinking, metacogniton through taboo games. Fourth, students have a tendency to use a variety of direct and/or indirect experiences (especially, from media) as well as cross curricular knowledge in order to explain keyword without using taboo words.

  • Gordon & Loeb[1] suggested that the optimal level of investment decision of an enterprise is the point that the marginal benefit(MB) of information security investment is equal to the marginal cost(MC). However, many companies suffering from information security incidents are not aware of the fact that they are experiencing information security accidents and can not measure how much they are affected. In this paper, I propose a model of information security investment decision making under the incomplete information situation by modifying the Gordon & Loeb[1] model and compare the differences in investment level. Under the incomplete information situation the expected return from the information security investment tends to be lower than that of actual information security investment, and the level of investment is also less. This shows that if a third party such as the government gives accurate information such as the rate of incidents of information security accidents and the amount of damages, companies can expand their investment in information security.

Development and Validation of Situation Awareness Tests for Commercial Drivers (사업용 운전자를 위한 상황인식 검사의 개발과 타당화)

  • This research aimed to investigate whether commercial drivers' situation awareness ability is related to their frequency and magnitude of caused accidents and penalty points. For the purpose of measuring drivers' situation perception and interpretation capacities, two tests named 'situation awareness test' and 'hazard perception test' were developed. The tests were based on the data from 299 commercial drivers (test drivers) using a driving simulator. The outcome of drivers' performance on situation awareness and hazard perception tests was designed to be categorized into 5 grades, classifying the best as grade 1 and the worst as grade 5. As the result, low grades on situation awareness test had positive relationship with accumulated penalty points, frequency of accidents and safety index. Grades on hazard perception test were also positively correlated with accident frequency and safety indices. This suggests situation awareness ability of commercial drivers is significantly related to traffic violations and accident causing tendencies.

Intra-Industry Market Response to the Tae-an Oil Spill Accident and the Corporate Environmental Disclosure (태안만 원유유출사건에 대한 시장반응과 환경공시)

  • This paper researched market responses for listed companies in several industries affected by the major oil spill accident off the coast of Taean, in December 7, 2007. The Taean accident triggered considerable concerns in people over the possibility of potential future regulation in shipbuilding and petroleum industries. However, the accident also provided an unexpected business opportunity for environmental clean-up industry and shipbuilding industry. The oil spill triggered the acceleration of the enactment of policies that require all new oil tankers to be constructed with double hull, which is interpreted as a good news for shipbuilding industry. Increased public pressure coupled with the prospect of tightened regulation is expected to decrease the market values of firms in the affected business fields. The stock prices of shipbuilding companies dropped after the incident but dramatically surged after the enactment of the policy in January 31, 2008. Our study also found that companies with more extensive prior environmental disclosure had less negative market reactions during the first sixteen days following the accident.

  • Traffic accidents at night occur more than any other time because of improper road light facility and delineators. Therefore, cost-effective criteria of installing delineators are needed instead of expensive road light facility, especially, on rural road including light volume of traffic. This paper presents the criteria of installing 'Chevron Alignment Sign' considering driver's visual behavior characteristics and 'Raised Pavement Marker' considering critical encroachment angie of both straight section and curve one in order to reduce both the number of accidents on curve sections and the number of road encroachment accidents, respectively. The characteristics of visual behaviors can be expressed by visual angle involving curve radius and intersection angle. The estimated installing angles are $1^{\circ}{\sim}2.5^{\circ}$ by radii, which is based on changes in sensitivity across visual field by exogenous attention. Also, the raised pavement marker is installed every 2m, 3m, and 4m considering critical encroachment angles by radii.

  • Learning graphical representations for statistical data requires understanding of the context related to measurement in statistical investigation since the choice of representation and the features of the selected graph to represent the data are determined by the purpose and context of data collection and the types of the data collected. This study investigated whether middle school students can think critically about measurement and scales integrating contextual knowledge and statistical knowledge. According to our results, the students lacked critical thinking related to measurement process of data and scales of graphical representations. In particular, the students had a tendency not to question upon information provided from data and graphs. They also lacked competence to critique data and graphs and to make a flexible judgement in light of context including statistical purpose.

  • At present automated speed enforcement system in Korea control overspeed vehicle only in the specific spot. Because the drivers generally recognize the previous stated fact, they reduce a speed only in the establishment location of systems and increase rapidly again as soon as it passes the location. we have known that the rate of traffic risk at the tunnel, bridge and curve road segment is higher than other road section. Therefore, it needs speed control in them. In such a case, it is necessary to establish the automated traffic enforcement system based on the travel time speed of an individual vehicle over a pre defined stretch of road. In this study, the application limit of existing spot overspeed enforcement system was studied through an analysis of traffic flow characteristics in the tunnel, bridge and curve section. Also we found out the optimal distance of segment and the most suitable location to an application of the overspeed vehicle by travel time speed through an analysis of the road structure, traffic condition and accident numbers in the road.

  • There is not enough absorption space in the side of a vehicle so injuries to a passenger are higher compared to frontal impact injuries. For the protection of the passenger in the event of a side impact, vehicle regulations and new car assessment program(NCAP) are implemented all over the world. However, passive safety such as absorption technology of vehicle body itself is limited due to the narrow space of the side part. At the present time, it is well known that a side airbag including a curtain airbag is the most effective system to protect the passenger during a side impact. In this study, optimum design of the curtain airbag is carried out to reduce Head Injury Criterion(HIC) of the passenger. Based on crashworthiness simulation, an orthogonal array is selected based on the defined design variables, the response surfaces are generated from the orthogonal array and optimization is conducted with the surfaces.

Unstable Approach Mitigation Based on Flight Data Analysis (비행 데이터 분석 기반의 불안정 접근 경감방안)

  • According to the International Air Transport Association (IATA), 61% of the accidents occurred during the approach and landing phase of the flight, with 16% of the accidents caused by unstable access of the commercial aircraft. It was identified that the pilot's unstable approach and poor manipulation of correction led to accidents by continuing the excessive approach without go-around manuever. The causes of unstable access may vary, including airport approach procedures, pilot error, misplanning, workload, ATC (Air Traffic Contol) congestion, etc. In this study, we use the flight data analysis system to select domestic case airports and aircraft type where unstable approach events occur repeatedly. Through flight data analysis, including main events, airport approach procedures, pilot operations, as well as various environmental factors such as weather and geographical conditions at the airport. It aims to identify and eliminate the tendency of unstable approach events and the causes and risks of them to derive implications for mitigating unstable approach events and for developing navigation safety measures.
