  • Using non-destructive analytical methods, we identified the material characteristics of two gold fabric artifacts excavated from the Cheongsong Sim clan (Bugeum Wonsam, Jikgeum Chima), including the artifact condition, fiber type, surface contamination, and metallic threads. We found that the artifacts were buried and had turned brown; thus, we were unable to determine their original color. The fiber type was determined to be silk from cocoons, based on scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) analyses of Amide I, II, III, and IV peaks, and color reactions Further, the FT-IR and X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analyses identified the white and black stains as natural resin hydrolyzed substances, such as lipids and proteins, that occurred as microbial decomposition due to body decay. Finally, the XRF analyses identified the thin gold layer of the metallic yarn as gold (Au). According to the FT-IR data and the color reaction to the metallic yarn medium, the adhesive component of the medium was a product of-Amides I, II, III, and 3000 cm-1 within Amides A and B (an animal type), respectively. Thus, the medium was identified as Hanji (Korean paper), which is made from domestically produced Broussonetia kazinoki fibers.

  • The acoustic emission(AE) behavior of reinforced concrete slab under flexural loading was investigated to assess the integrity. This study was aimed at identifying the characteristics of AE response associated with damage development. By applying cyclic loading in various load steps, it was able to differentiate each AE source such as distributed micro crack initiation, friction, flexural crack and localized diagonal tension crack. The secondary peak and the change of AE hit rate gave valuable criteria fur assessment. From the analysis of the felicity ratio, furthermore, it was shown that this values can be used for evaluating the degree of concrete damage. Based on the experimental results, this approach for practical AE application may provide a promising method for estimating the level of damage and distress in concrete structures.

  • This research aims to understand the precise character of relics based on literature search and material analysis of the jade excavated from the first buried place of King Jung-jo, and to assess the level of damage through non-destructive diagnosis. Furthermore, scientific conservation treatment was used to restore the original shape of the excavated jade. According to literature search, the excavated jade is known to be jasper, but material analysis showed that it was as a serpentine with the mineral composition of antigorite. Infrared thermography analysis to assess deterioration showed that the internal damage is the result of the interstices developed along the boundary surface of the obtained jade. For conservation treatment of the damaged area on the surface, the jade was filled with a mixture of plaster and glue, and covered with a mixture of acrylic paint and gloss medium for protection, and color was adjusted.

  • The purpose of this study is to apply the handheld Raman spectrometer to identify the coloring materials used in a large Buddhist painting (of Maitreya Buddha) at Janggoksa Temple through cross-validation with HH-XRF. An in situ investigation was performed together with use of a digital microscope and HH-XRF analysis to verify the properties of pigments used in the gwaebul ("large Buddhist painting") via a non-destructive method. However, the identification of coloring materials composed of light elements and mixed or overlaid pigments is difficult using only non-destructive analysis data. Unlike in situ investigation, laboratory analysis often required samples yet the sampling is restricted to a small quantity due to the cultural heritage characteristic. Thus, it is necessary to develop a non-destructive in situ method to supplement the HH-XRF data. The large Buddhist painting at Janggoksa Temple was painted mainly using white, red, yellow, green, and blue colors. The Raman spectroscopy provides molecular information, while XRF spectroscopy provides information about elemental composition of the pigments. Analysis results identified various coloring materials: inorganic pigment, such as lead white, minium, cinnabar, and orpiment, as well as organic pigment such as gamboge and indigo. Therefore, it is possible to obtain more information for the identification of pigments; organic pigment and mixed or overlaid pigments, while at the same time minimizing the collection sample and simplifying the analysis procedure compared to previously used methods. The results of this study will be used as basic data for the analysis of painting cultural heritage through a non-destructive in situ method in the future.

  • Since the used materials of furnace heater tube with different kinds of thermal degradation were not commonly available, the HK-40 steel specimens were heat-treated isothermally at elevated temperature to simulate the microstructure at the service temperature. HK-40 steel specimens with five different aging time were prepared by isothermal heat treatment at $1050^{\circ}C$. The characteristics of the magnetic susceptibility have been investigated for the degradation evaluation of HK-40 steel. The magnetic susceptibility at room temperature increases as the extent of degradation of the materials increases. The variation of magnetic susceptibility was compared with the variation of tensile properties and Vickers hardness. To investigate the effect of the microsturctural change on the characteristics of tensile properties, hardness and magnetic susceptibility, the microstructures were examined by a scanning electron microscope(SEM) and the chemical compositions were analyzed by a energy spectrometer of SEM. As a result, the magnetic susceptibility method can be suggested as one of the nondestructive evaluation methods for the degradation of the HK-40 steel.

  • Magnetic hysteresis loops of a nickel strip and a Fe-Co alloy strip, which have been used in magnetostrictive strip type guided wave transducers for long range ultrasonic testing of pipelines, were measured and then magnetic property effects of a strip on transducer sensitivity were analyzed. The sensitivity of an optimized Fe-Co strip transducer was superior to that of the nickel strip transducer by a factor of about 30. It was shown that this was mainly attributed to the differences in remanence magnetization and coercivity of the two magnetostrictive materials.

  • Vibro-contact of cantilever tip is studied with respect to contact mechanics and an elastic characteristic of nanoscale surface is imaged. The contact resonance frequency is calculated theoretically using the spring-mass and Herzian models, and the variation of resonance frequency of cantilever was analyzed when the cantilever was free and contact. The elasticity imaging was also achieved successfully using phase and amplitude signals obtained from the spheroidized steel specimens by prototype ultrasonic AFM.

  • The purpose of study has to analyze with non destructive method for researching the tool that could be measured with the status of record written on Hanji speedily. Because the original record should be destructed for analyzing with previous method in the case of the paper record, it was to develop the tool based on non destructive method for overcoming such limit. The study was used with FT NIR (Fourier transform NIR) for analyzing the Hanji for being written and preserved. The FT NIR spectrometer that of NIR spectrometer has the better performance of precision and accuracy than dispersive NIR spectrometer was used. Also the wavelength of FT-NIR was measured with 12,500 to 4,000 $cm^{-1}$, and the integrating sphere as diffuse reflectance type was used for analyzing Hanji. The moisture and acidity (pH) of chemical factors as quality evaluated factor of Hanji was studied for the correlation of NIR spectrum. And then The NIR spectrum was pretreated for showing the coefficients of optimum correlation. MSC and First derivative of Savitzky - Golay was used as pretreated method, and the coefficients of optimum correlation were shown by PLSR(Partial least square regression). And the coefficients of optimum correlation were calculated by PLSR(Partial least square regression). The correlation coefficients of acidity had 0.92 on NIR spectra without pretreatment. Also the SEP of acidity was 0.24. And then The NIR spectra with pretreatment would have more good correlation coefficients ($R^2=0.98$) and more good SEP(=019) on acidity. Therefore the data of correlation coefficients ($R^2$) and SEP with pretreatment was shown to be superior. And NIR spectra data of first derivative had best linearity on the correlation coefficients ($R^2=0.99$) and also SEP(=0.45) was superior. Therefore the correlation coefficients and SEP of first derivative had better than those of NIR spectra of no pretreatment. As such result, it was possible to evaluate the record status of Hanji speedily with integrated sphere and NIR analyzer as non destructive method.

  • In this study, acoustic emission (AE) signals due to surface cracking and moisture movement in the flat-sawn boards of oak (Quercus Variablilis) during drying under the ambient conditions were analyzed and classified using the principal component analysis. The AE signals corresponding to surface cracking showed higher in peak amplitude and peak frequency, and shorter in rise time than those corresponding to moisture movement. To reduce the multicollinearity among AE features and to extract the significant AE parameters, correlation analysis was performed. Over 99% of the variance of AE parameters could be accounted for by the first to the fourth principal components. The classification feasibility and success rate were investigated in terms of two statistical classifiers having six independent variables (AE parameters) and six principal components. As a result, the statistical classifier having AE parameters showed the success rate of 70.0%. The statistical classifier having principal components showed the success rate of 87.5% which was considerably than that of the statistical classifier having AE parameters.
