In recent years, there has been an increasing demand to apply the new IACS(International Association of Classification Societies) standards for ice and polar-classed ships. For ice-class vessel propulsion system, the ice impact torque design criterion is defined as a periodic harmonic function in relation to the number of the propeller blades. However, irregular or transient ice impact torque is assumed to occur likely in actual circumstances rather than these periodic loadings. In this paper, the reliability and torsional vibration characteristics of a comparatively large six-cylinder marine diesel engine for propulsion shafting system was examined and reviewed in accordance with current regulations. In this particular, the transient ice impact torque and excessive vibratory torque originating from diesel engine were interpreted and the resonant points identified through theoretical analysis. Several floating ice impacts were carried out to evaluate torque responses using the calculation method of classification rule requirement. The Newmark method was used for the transient response analysis of the whole system.

This paper deals with the free vibrations of circular strip foundations which have uniform solid rectangular cross-section. The ground which supports circular strips was modeled as the two parameter elastic foundation. Differential equations governing the flexural-torsional free vibrations of circular strips supported by such foundation were derived, and solved numerically for obtaining the natural frequencies and mode shapes. Boundary condition of free-free ends was considered for numerical examples. Four lowest natural frequencies according to the variations of five system parameters i.e. subtended angle, depth ratio, contact ratio, elasticity ratio and soil parameter are reported in the non-dimensional forms. Also, typical mode shapes of both deformations and stress resultants are presented in the figures. Experiment was conducted for validating the theory developed in this study.

In this paper, the influence of a crack on the natural frequency of cracked cantilever L-shaped beam with coupled bending and torsional vibrations by analytically and experimentally is analyzed. The L-shaped beam with a crack is modeled by Hamilton's principle with consideration of bending and torsional energy. The two coupled governing differential equations are reduced to one sixth-order ordinary differential equation in terms of the flexural displacement. The crack is assumed to be in the first, second and third mode of fracture and to be always opened during the vibrations. The theoretical results are validated by a comparison with experimental measurements. The maximal difference between the theoretical results and experimental measurements of the natural frequency is less than 7.5% in the second vibration mode.

The lateral forces such as the earthquake and wind my cause the torsion to be coupled with the lateral bending in the gider, the cross-section of wich has only one axis of symmetry. This induces additional stresses especially in cables arranged in double-planes. Since this effect cannot be considered by using the conventional frame elements, the stiffness and the mass matrices of the geometrically nonlinear thin-walled frame element are developed in this study to model the girder. The equivalent modulus of elasticity proposed by Ernst is used for the cable elements. Verification of the present theory is made through a numerical example. Then, the free vibration of a three dimensional cable-stayed bridge is analyzed to study the coupled flexural-torsional behavior.

Built-in Eccentric Bearing-Torsional Spring (BEBTS) type Automatic Belt Tension Unit (ABTU) is one of typical belt tension units. The BEBTS type ABTU system frequently experiences torsional vibration about its pivot due to the variation of belt tension. However, it is very difficult to analyze the rotational (or torsional) vibration of the ABTU because the exciting moment varies according to the change of belt tension. To get over this difficulty, in this paper. the ABTU was simplified as 1-DOF translational motion model in the tangential direction. Its equation of motion was derived and solved. The time history and frequency responses were computed and examined for three of BEBTS type ABTUs which are made by different manufacturers but the tame kind.

In this study, an assessment is made for the helicopter vibration reduction of composite rotor blades using an active twist control concept. The piezoceramic shear actuation mechanism along with elastic couplings of composite blades is used for vibration reduction. The rotor blades are modeled as composite box-beams with actuator layers bonded on the outer surfaces of the thin-walled section. The governing equations of motion for helicopter blades are obtained using Hamilton's principle. A time domain unsteady aerodynamic theory with free wake model is used to obtain the airloads. Various rotor configurations with different elastic couplings with appropriate actuator placement are used to investigate the hub vibration characteristics. Numerical results show that a substantial reduction of $N_b$/rev hub vibration can be achieved using the optimal control algorithm.
It is very important to analyze the torsional vibration for the propulsion shafting of ship. The authors have developed the transfer stiffness coefficient method(TSCM) as a vibration analysis algorithm. The concept of the TSCM is based on the successive transfer of stiffness coefficient. The effectiveness of the TSCM was verified through many applications. In this paper, the TSCM is applied to the torsional free vibration analysis for the propulsion shafting of an actual shin with a diesel engine. In order to calculate the additional torsional stresses of the propulsion shafting the torsional forced vibration for the shafting is analyzed by using both the modal analysis method and the results of the torsional free vibration analysis by the TSCM. The accuracy of the present method is confirmed by comparing with the vibration analysis results of engine maker.

In the present paper, a new version of DYMORE, which is an analysis to solve a nonlinear multi-body dynamics problem, is used to simulate an Individual Blade Control (IBC) algorithm in order to reduce vibration in helicopter rotors. The Active Twist Rotor (ATR), in which Active Fiber Composites (AFC) are embedded, is utilized for IBC. The main purpose of the present investigation is to compare the analytical results with experiments and previous version of DYMORE. The experiments are performed at NASA Langley Transonic Dynamics Tunnel. According to the present result, it is observed that the correlation regarding the vibratory loads is improved.

In this study, shape-based track management by analyzing track irregularity was studied in terms of force-based track irregularity analysis by numerical analysis of wheel-rail interaction force using by the measured vertical irregularity. The effect of the vertical irregularity of the track due to the difference in track types on the wheel-rail interaction force and the track acceleration in the connecting section of the sleeper floating track and the direct fixation track on concrete bed were analyzed. As the results of this study, the measured vertical irregularity was directly affect the vertical wheel load (the wheel-rail interaction force) and the rail acceleration, and it has been demonstrated to change consistently. In this study, the adequacy and necessity of the force-based track irregularity analysis method was verified based on the wheel-rail interaction analysis using the the measured vertical irregularity.
