This study aims to investigate the characteristics of cyber communities composed of migrant workers from communities without propinquity in Korea. Its methods are both qualitative and quantitative. It further seeks to discover the relationship between the social capital formed and reproduced within these cyber communities and participants' cultural adaptation to Korean society. The study revealed that ethnic and non-ethnic communities differed in terms of strength of cohesion, space constraints, and links with the outside world. The former showed characteristics of a localized community type. The main motivations for migrant workers' participation in the ethnic cyber community were communication and friendship rather than cooperation and sharing among members. They usually used cyber communication media to communicate with one another. Conversely, the latter showed characteristics of an integrative type. Despite the difficulties in applying for membership and information provided in Korean, a high percentage of migrant workers participated in the community to obtain crucial information. The results did not show a significant correlation between social capital and migrant workers' traits within the cyber community, while a strong correlation emerged among four factors of social capital: faith, norms, networking, and political participation. The study showed that social capital in the cyber community was in direct proportion to an integrative type of cultural adaptation to Korean society. In particular, there was a strong connection between the cultural adaptation exhibited by members of the migrant subculture and their participation in discussions on political issues and human rights, with some migrants even functioning as agents of social change as participants in citizens' movements. The findings suggest that the cyber community facilitates the migrant subculture's communication with and integration into the indigenous Korean culture. Migrant workers' participation in the cyber community is therefore validated as an instrumental practice for members of this subculture to adapt to Korean society.
Sweet persimmon were tested in order to identify their use as secondary material which is excellent in function and taste as food. Samples were soaked for 1 and 5 min with NaCl concentration(0, 1 and 3%) at a certain heating temperature(25, 75 and 95$\^{C}$), and then tannin, vitamin C, flavonol, color intensity, sensory test and textural properties were analysed. The results of the analyses were as follows. Tannins were decreased as heating temperature, NaCl concentration and soaking time were increased, especially, that the control was 420 mg% but decreased 228 and 198 mg% at 95$\^{C}$(1 and 3% NaCl concentration) for 5 min. soaked in each. Vitamin C content also decreased more in higher temperature and NaCl concentration than control(122.4 mg%). Color intensity showed higher value in 1. and b than in heating temperature, NaCl concentration and soaked time longer remarkably, but a value decreased. The peel of sweet persimmons was analyzed myricetin(2.0 $\mu$g/g), quercetin(34.5 $\mu$g/g) and kaemperol(1.1$\mu$g/g), but in pre-treatment sample(95$\^{C}$, 1% NaCl concentration and 5 min. soaked) was showed higher myricetin(9.5 $\mu$g/g) and quercetin(5.5 $\mu$g/g). Textural properties were good in pre-treatment sample(95$\^{C}$, 1% NaCl concentration and 5 min. soaked) such as brittleness, cohesiveness, gumminess and chewiness. In sensory analysis, the pre-treatment samples(95$\^{C}$, 1% NaCl concentration and 5 min. soaked and 95$\^{C}$, 3% NaCl concentration and 1 min. soaked) were showed higher point than others.

The objective of this study was to determine the quality characteristics of fried yakgwa and baked yakgwa prepared with different amounts of P. frutescens powder. Moisture contents of fried yakgwa were 7.05%, and moisture content of baked yakgwa with different amounts of P. frutescens powder were 12.42~10.44% and decreased with higher amount of P. frutescens powder. This result can be attributed to loss of water in yakgwa in the course of the fried process. Although the degree of expansion of baked yakgwa was lower than that of fried yakgwa, size and shape of yakgwa were maintained. Yakgwa is appropriate as a cookie type product. Crude lipid contents of fried yakgwa were higher than those of baked yakgwa due to the exchange reaction of water and fat during the fried process. Energy of fried yakgwa was 501 kcal and was higher than that of baked yakgwa with different amounts of P. frutescens powder. This greatly affected the fat content of each sample. Energy of baked yakgwa increased with higher amount of P. frutescens powder due to the characteristics of the ingredients or jasoyeop. For chromaticity determination, L values of fried yakgwa were lower, but a, and b values were higher than those of baked yakgwa, and L, a, and b values decreased when P. frutescens powder increased. Texture measurement showed that hardness, cohesiveness, chewiness, gumminess increased with higher amounts of P. frutescens powder, whereas springiness decreased. The antioxidant activities of fried yakgwa measured based on DPPH scavenging activity were higher than those of baked yakgwa with 0%~0.2% P. frutescens powder and lower than those of baked yakgwa with 0.3%~0.4% P. frutescens powder. In the sensory evaluation, baked yakgwa with 0.1% addition of P. frutescens powder showed the highest preference in terms of overall acceptance, and 0% addition of P. frutescens powder showed the highest preference in terms of color and flavor. These results suggest that P. frutescens powder may be a useful ingredient in baked yakgwa to improve quality and sensory properties.
The skipjack and Alaska pollack meat were packed in square No. 3B can, and thermally processed at $121.1^{\cir}C$ so far as to reach Fo values of 5, 10 and 20, respectively. Also the another samples which were heated at $98^{\cir}C$ for 30 minutes were prepared. We have examined the changes of nitrogenous extractives and texture by thermal processing at high temperature in both fish meats. Moisture contents of both fish meats decreased slightly with the increasing of Fo values. When the samples were heated at $98^{\cir}C$ and $121.1^{\cir}C$, pH and VBN contents increased markedly in both fish meats; increasing ratio of pH and VBN contents in skipjack meat was larger than those of Alaska pollack meat. Histamine were detected in concentration of 6.1mg/100g, 0.1mg/100g in raw skipjack and Alaska pollack meat, 8.2mg/100g, 0.1mg/100g in Fo 20 samples of these fish meats, respectively. The contents of total free amino acids in skipjack and Alaska polack meat were 984.8mg/100g, 282.3mg/100g, and these total contents decreased slightly with increasing of Fo values. Little changes were observed in free amino acid composition, but only His, Tau, Ala in skipjack meat and Tau in Alaska pollack meat decreased significantly by heat treatment. Also the degredation of IMP were Proceeded during Preparation and heat treatment of samples, and TMAO changed into TMA almost equivalently. In changes of textures, as compared with heating of 98t for 30 minutes; Fo 5 heat treatment became more softened these fish meats.

Purpose : To determine the diagnostic accuracy of four different sequences : moderately T2 weighted, two heavily T2-weighted single shot turbo spin-echo sequence and breath-hold axial-2D balanced turbo field-echo sequence(bFFE) for characterization of focal lesions. Materials and Methods : During the 3-month period between June and August 2005, seventy-six patients were proved to have ninety-three focal hepatic lesions on MR imaging. The patients consisted of 49 men and 27 women (age range, 15-75 years; mean age, 56.23 years). All MR images were acquired on a 1.5-T MR using the following sequences: 1. A breath-hold axial T2-weighted single shot turbo spin-echo sequence, 2. a breath-hold axial-2D balanced turbo field-echo sequence. Two radiologists performed quantitative analysis. Another radiologist measured the lesion-to-liver contrast-to-noise ratio at the region-of-interest in the four sequences. Results : There was no significant difference in inter-observer variability between the four sequences. The accuracy for both cyst and malignancy of moderate T2 weighted MRI (echo time: 80 msec) was also highest. There was significant difference for lesion characterization between moderate T2 weighted MRI and balanced steady state procession (p-value: 0.004) in the second reader. For longer echo time, the CNR of cystic lesions were markedly increased in comparison to lesions of other component. Conclusion : The accuracy and inter-observer variability of single shot turbo spin echo T2 weighted sequence was higher than bFFE. Although there was no statically significant difference, moderate T2 weighted MRI (echo time: 80 msec) was more accurate than heavily T2 weighted sequence (echo time: 300 msec). If the results for lesion characterization is equivocal in TE 80, the addition of heavily T2 weighted MRI (echo time: 180 msec) can be helpful.

As one of trials to process instant sardine foods which can be preserved at room temperature, three kinds of products were prepared as seasoned-dried product (control, C), liquid smoked seasoned-dried product(S) and antioxidant treated seasoned-dried product(E), and their processing conditions and quality stability during storage were examined. Raw sardines were dressed, steamed and then filleted. The sardine fillets were seasoned with the mixed seasoning solution containing $28.0\%$ of sorbitol, $14.0%$ of sugar, $5.6\%$ of table salt, $1.8\%$ of monosodium glutamate, $0.6\%$ of garlic powder and $50.0\%$ of water at $5^{\circ}C$ for 15 hours, and dipped for 45 seconds in $10\%$ Smoke-EZ solution. After liquid smoking, the seasoned and liquid smoked sardine fillets were dried at $45^{\circ}C$ for 4 hours, vacuum packed in laminated plastic film bag(polyester/casted polypropylene= $12{\mu}m/70{\mu}m,\;15{\times}16cm$), and finally pasteurized in water at $95^{\circ}C$ for 30 minutes. The results obtained from chemical and microbial experiments during storage are as follows : the moisture contents, water activity and pH of the products showed little change, and VBN of them slightly increased during storage. The TBA value and POV of the products (E, S) were lower than those of control product(C) considerably. In color values, L value (linghtness) decreased while a and b value (red and yellow) revealed a tendency to increase during storage. The fatty acid composition of the products were similar to those of raw sardine, the predominant fatty acids were 16:0, 20:5, 18:1 and 22:6. The products (E, S) have a good preservative effect on highly unsturated fatty acids during storage. Viable cell counts of those products were negative and histamine contents were less than 2.0 mg/100 g. Among the texture profiles, hardness, elasticity and cohesiveness of the products slightly decreased during storage. Judging from the sensory evaluations, liquid smoked seasoned-dried product(S) was the most desirable, and the products could be preserved in good condition for 40 days at $25{\pm}3^{\circ}C$.
For the purpose of obtaining basic data which can be applied to evaluate the quality of the retortable pouch and tin-plated canned product, the canned sardine and the retort pouched sardine were prepared and compared in terms of thermal sterilization times required and product duality during storage. Retort pouched sardine required $20\%$ less thermal sterilization time than the canned sardine. Volatile basic nitrogen (VBN) and amino nitrogen ($NH_2-N$) contents in both canned and retort pouched sardine showed little difference during processing and storage. During storage, peroxide value (POV) and thiobarbituric acid (TBA) value of the canned sardine had a slightly higher value compared to the retort pouched sardine, but acid value (AV) revealed little difference between both canned and retort pouched sardine. Trimethylamine (TMA) content of the both canned and retort pouched sardine showed little difference during processing and storage. The inosinic acid (IMP) content in canned and retort pouched sardine was $8.39{\sim}9.80{\mu}mole/g$ range, and had no significant change during processing and storage. The retort ponched sardine revealed a smaller reduction in polyenoic acid than the canned sardine during processing and storage. Among the TPA (texture profile analysis) parameters, hardness maintained a slightly higher value in the retort pouched sardine than in the canned sardine. Color values showed that the retort pouched sardine was generally lighter than the canned sardine. In sensory evaluation, the retort pouched sardine was scored slightly higher, in most cases, for color, flavor, texture, taste and overall acceptance than the canned sardine. It was concluded from the results that the retort pouched sardine was at least equal to the canned sardine in product quality.
Background: Dilution of blood cardioplegia is not needed in IAWBC as it is in cold blood cardioplegia because it does not aggregate red blood cells on normal body temperature and does not compromise micro coronary circulation. This study was designed to evaluate the safety and efficacy of undiluted potassium solution in IAWBC. Material and Method: Thirty patients who underwent CABG with IAWBC were grouped into dilutedplegia (n=14) and microplegia (n=16). Potassium was delivered conventionally with 4 : 1 delivery kit in the dilutedplegia group. The undiluted potassium was directly connected on the blood of oxygenator in the microplegia group. Result: There were no differences in sex, age, left ventricular ejection fraction, number of grafts, aortic cross clamping time, and the value of perioperative myocardial enzyme between the two groups. There were no perioperative myocardial infarction and hospital mortality. The amount of crystalloid cardioplegia was 1346$\pm$597 mL in dilutedplegia (mean$\pm$standard deviation, and 28$\pm$9 mL in microplegia (p<0.0001). The hematocrit during cardiopulmonary bypass was 21$\pm$4% in dilutedplegia and 24$\pm$3% in microplegia (p>0.05). 11 patients in dilultedplegia received blood transfusion, but 4 patients in microplegia received blood transfusion (p<0.05). The amount of urine and hemofiltration during the operation were more in dilutedplegia (1250$\pm$810 mL, 1689$\pm$548 mL) than in microplegia (959$\pm$410 mL, 1461$\pm$784 mL; p<0.05). Conclusion: The undiluted potassium of IAWBC in CABG operation is a safe, effective technique for myocardial protection to prevent fluid overload, and blood transfusion. There is no need to use the delivery kit.
Immune response to two methods of Newcastle disease virus vaccine, one inactivated and the other attenuated was observed and the data presented. (1) Administration of inactivated virus vaccine in an amount of 1.0 ml. by intramuscular route gave an appreciable immunity to Newcastle disease for a period of at least three-and-half months. (2) The chickens given attenuated virus vaccine in the drinking water produced satisfactory immunity as manifested by the fact that immunized birds showed resistance when challenged 105 days after the vaccination and maintained high degree of HI titer for a period of 75 days. (3) Vaccination with the attenuated virus vaccine in drinking water is very simple and time saving in procedure, although the duration of immunity seems to be slightly shorter than that proced by inactivated virus vaccine. This study was conducted to compare carcass yield and meat quality among four lines of Korean native chickens (Yeonsan Ogye, Hyunin Black, Hoengseong Yakdak and Hwangbong) and White Leghorn as control. Chickens (N=23, male) were grown under same conditions and slaughtered at 56 weeks old to observe the physicochemical differences in breast and leg meats. The live and carcass weights of Hwangbong were significantly higher than other chickens (p<0.05). Four lines of Korean native chickens, regardless of the part, had higher shear force value than White Leghorn (p<0.05). In addition, the breast meat of Korean native chickens had higher cooking loss and lower water holding capacity than that of White Leghorn. The cooked meat of Hwangbong particularly were more chewy, gummy and cohesive with lower tenderness than other chickens (p<0.05). Oleic acid content which is related to meat flavor was significantly higher in the breast meat of Hoengseong Yakdak (39.6%). The meat of Korean native chickens had lower n6/n3 ratio, in which the breast and leg meat of Hoengseong Yakdak contained the lowest ratio (p<0.05). The meat of Hwangbong and Hoengseong Yakdak were more acceptable than the others according to sensory test (p<0.05).
