  • Nonlinear flow characteristics of a hydrofoil running under the free surface are investigated based on potential flow theory using singularity distribution techniques. Following Hess & Smith's method[12], sources and vortices are distributed on the surface of the foil and Rankine sources are distributed at a distance above the undisturbed free surface to solve the nonlinear free surface waves(so called Raised Panel Method). Using the linearized Neumann-Kelvin solution, the conversed solutions which rigidly satisfy the nonlinear free surface condition is obtained through an iterative technique. It is validated that the nonlinear solutions are compared with Duncan's experimental results(NACA 0012, $\alpha=5^{\circ}$), showing good correlations with each other. At a very shallow submergence and a very high speed the converged solutions are obtained. As the speed increases higher, it is shown that the difference between the nonlinear and linear solutions are trivial. Finally, the effects of the camber and thickness on the nonlinear flow characteristics of the foil are investigated.

  • Normally consolidated and slightly overconsolidated soft clay layer is widely distributed in the south coast of Korea. To ensure the efficient and economical construction design of any structure to be built on this soft soil, exhaustive studies related to geotechnical and physical engineering properties are required. In this study, the relationship of the physical properties of southern Gwangyang marine clay in the Korea Peninsula were examined, including natural water content, specific gravity, total unit weight, initial void ratio, liquid limit, plastic limit, and physical properties of activity and soil parameters. For the parameter relationship analysis, the latest relatively reliable data on the large harbor construction work were used, optimum values were deducted with linear regression and non-linear regression between soil parameters, water content or initial void ratio appears to be very large. Moreover, in the linear and involution pattern regression, equal coefficient of determination appeared. The relationship of the different parameters was shown to be excellent in the non-linear regression of involution equation and exponential equation pattern compared with the findings of linear regression analysis.

  • In this paper, a modified version of PRML is discussed to reduce nonlinearity in digital high-density storage devices. We propose a PRML with a nonlinear compensator which can reduce nonlinear interaction between the stored flux regions on the storage channel, and apply it to recording channels with three different densities. By comparing its performance with the existing PRML through computer simulation, we confirm that the nonlinear intersymbol interference increasing with high-density recording channels can be reduced effectively by the PRML with a nonlinear compensator.

  • Non-linear cellular automata is difficult to analyze mathematically than linear cellular automata. So it is difficult to identify reachable states and attractors of nongroup non-linear cellular automata than nongroup linear cellular automata. In this paper, we propose a new reachable table to overcome these problems. We can see the next state for all the states of the non-linear cellular automata by the proposed reachable table. In addition, we can identify reachable states and attractors by the reachable table.

  • An analysis algorithm and a computer program have been developed to clarify the geometrically nonlinear response characteristics of a suspension bridge subject to the support excitation. The Finite Element procedures are utilized for the application to a self-anchored suspension bridge or to a mono-duo cable suspension bridge. The propagation of earthquake wave is simulated by taking a record as the input at the left anchorage of the bridge, and addign appropriate time delay to the other inputs for the purpose of considering the multi-support effects. According to the application for a mono-duo self-anchored suspension bridge, it has been found that the effects of nonlinear behavior and multi-support excitation are notable for this relatively short-spanned suspension bridge.

  • Nonlinear hydrological model containing the nonlinearity of effective rainfall, lag time and runoff is presented. In the evaluation of rainfall excess, the polynomial fitting method for total rainfall, 5 day antecedant rainfall and direct runoff is developed. In the application to actual watershed, the estimated model parameters of nonlinear lag model reflecting the nonlinearity of lag time are compared with the parameters, by both the fitting method and the correlation, model which are the modified version of the storage function model. The Successive Approximation Method in mathematical solution and Newton-Rhapson method in numerical solution are found to be superior to the conventional numerical graphic method in the analysis of nonlinear processes.

  • This paper reports the results of a case study for the evaluation of surface damage by using acoustic nonlinearity of surface wave. In this study, the experimental system was constructed to measure the acoustic nonlinear parameter of surface wave in an Aluminum 6061 T6 specimen of which surface was damaged by the three point bending fatigue test, and magnitudes of nonlinear parameter measured before and after the fatigue test were compared. Especially, since the surface fatigue damage by the three point bending is concentrated at the central position of loading, the change in the nonlinear parameter around this position was monitored. Experimental results showed that the measured nonlinear parameter at the outside of this position after the fatigue test was almost same as the initial value before the fatigue test, since the fatigue damage at this position was little. However, clear increase in the nonlinear parameter was noticed after the fatigue test at the central position of specimen where the surface fatigue damage is expected to be concentrated.

  • In the present study, the influences of grains and precipitates of microstructural evolution on the ultrasonic nonlinearity have been experimentally investigated. The prior-austenite grain and precipitate size are controlled by the variation in austenitizing and tempering conditions in reactor pressure vessel materials of nuclear power plant, SA508 Gr.3 low alloys. The ultrasonic nonlinearity was found to have strong correlations with grains and precipitates since the ultrasonic nonlinear parameter $\beta$ shows decrease trend with coarsening of grains and precipitates. Although the prior-austenite grain size increased, the $\beta$ changed little due to the effects of subgrains, packets and laths. For the preciptate effects, the $\beta$ decreased sharply due to decrease in $Mo_2C$ causing the coherency stain in addition to the precipitate size. The results in this study may provide a potential for characterizing the microstructural evolution, grains and precipitates, by measuring the ultrasonic nonlinearity.
