  • To investigate the effect of inorganic ($GeO_2$) and organic (Ge-132) germanium treatment on Brasica juncea C. plant, growth characteristics and Ge contents were examined with various inorganic or organic germanium treatments (0, 5, 10, 25, 50, 75 and $100mg\;L^{-1}$), respectively. Brasica juncea C. growth did not much inhibited until Ge $10mg\;L^{-1}$ concentration under both Ge-132 and $GeO_2$ treatments as compared to control. On the other hand, at Ge concentration higher than $25mg\;L^{-1}$ concentration, Brasica juncea C. growth was inhibited under both Ge-132 and $GeO_2$ treatments. Under treatment of $GeO_2$, length of root and shoot slightly increased until $5mg\;L^{-1}$ concentration and dry weight slightly increased until $10mg\;L^{-1}$ concentration. Under treatment of Ge-132, length of root and shoot slightly increased until $10mg\;L^{-1}$ concentration and dry weight slightly increased until $25mg\;L^{-1}$ concentration. Total Ge contents in Brasica juncea C. early seedlings with $GeO_2$ treatment were a bit higher than those with Ge-132 treatment. Germanium was primarily accumulated in the roots (77%) with organic Ge (Ge-132) treatments, whereas Ge was primarily accumulated in the leaf (70%, respectively) with $GeO_2$ treatments. The Ge uptake rates in inorganic Ge treatments were slightly high than those in organic Ge treatments. Under inorganic Ge treatment with $2.5mg\;L^{-1}$, about 3% of Ge was accumulated into plant and distribution in leaf and root was 84.8% and 15.2%, respectively. Under organic Ge treatment with $2.5mg\;L^{-1}$, about 2.6% of Ge was accumulated into plant and distribution in leaf and root was 66.4% and 33.6%, respectively.

  • In order to examine the possible use of rock phosphate as P source, tomato seedlings with or without inoculation of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi were grown in the pots of sterile volcanic ash soil from Cheju island with two levels of phosphorus (100 and 200 mg/kg) supplied either as fused or as rock phosphate. After three months of culture, plant dry weight, P and other nutrient uptake, root colonization and spore density in the soil were determined. Treatments of rock phosphate of both levels resulted in the significantly depressed plant growth in comparison to the treatments of fused phosphate, likely due to lower P availability in soil with rock phosphate. Mycorrhizal fungi inoculation increased the dry weight of plant at 200 mg/kg level of both fused and rock phosphate. Root infection and sporoulation were reduced in rock phosphate treatments. Nitrogen, K, Ca and Mg contents in plants were not significantly different at all treatments. As a P source, rock phosphate in combination with mycorrhizae was not satisfactory for optimum plant growth at $100{\sim}200\;mg/kg$ levels in Cheju volcanic ash soil.

  • The nutrient content and protein quality of Giant snalil (Acchatina ) meats (white, yellow, and gray) were determined for fresh and processed products. Fresh snail meats contained 81~82% moisture, 11~14% protein, 0.9~1.3% fat, and 1.2-1.4% ash. Proximate composition of fresh meat varied (p<0.05) with meat colour and gray meat had the lowest protein and highest ash content among samples. The major minerals of fresh snail meats were calcium (318~570mg%), potassium (170~190mg%), and magnesium (74~103mg%).Gray meat showed the higher calcium and lower sodium level than the other snail meats. No differences were found between fresh snail meats on amino acid profile, and total essential amino acid was 46% of total amino acids in all snail meats. In vitro protein digestibility of fresh snail meats were ranged from 76 to 81% which were lower than that of marine moulusks. Processing resulted in some increase(1.7~5.7%) in protein digestibility but no differences were found in C-PER after processing. The 25% saline water extractable mucous materials from fresh snail meat influenced in decreasing digestibility of other protein sources from 2% (casein) to 11% (filefish protein).

  • A green house experiment was conducted to investigate the performance of Chinese cabbage and radish and changes in soil chemical properties after application of different amounts of simulated acid rain (SAR). About 10mm of normal water (pH 6.0), 5mm of SAR followed by 5mm of normal water, and 10mm of SAR were applied 24 times at the two-day intervals. The results obtained are summarized as follows : 1. Visible symptoms were dark brown, red brown, or grey brown leaf spots, reduced leaf size, or some times wrinked leaves in both crops. The visible symptoms started after the third application of SAR. The degree of damages was greater as the amounts and the number of times of SAR application increased. 2. Chlorophyll contents of SAR applied leaves decreased as the amounts of SAR application increased. 3. As the amounts of SAR increased, length, diameter, and fresh weight of Chinese cabbage heads and radish roots decreased. 4. In both crops sulfur content increased, while calcium content decreased as the amounts of SAR increased. Contents of N, P, K, and Mg were not significnatly affected by the amounts of SAR. 5. SAR decreased soil pH and exchangeable cations (Ca, Mg, K), while increased soil sulfur content.

  • Objective of this study was to investigate characteristics of inorganic components contained in liquid fertilizer produced using seaweed by adding microorganisms and molasses. Addition of dry yeast to liquid fertilizer resulted in little change in pH and considerable increase in EC with high EC value compared to other liquid fertilizers which have microorganisms additives. Also, it was appeared that the dry yeast-added treatment had higher $NH_4-N$ concentration than other treatments. In the other hand, addition of molasses resulted in low pH compared to the control which has no additives, and EC was not different depending on the amount of molasses. $NH_4-N$ concentration in the 2% molasses added treatment was lowest and it showed a significant difference in the no and 1% molasses added treatments. In conclusion, it was shown that addition of dry yeast to liquid fertilizer increased ammonium nitrogen concentration by accelerating nitrogen mineralization, while molasses has an effect of inhibiting nitrogen mineralization. With application of organic liquid fertilizer containing seaweed increased the fresh weight of chinese cabbage.

  • This study investigated the effect of phosphorus fractionation on the phosphorus release from the sediments of Juksan reservoir in Yeongsan River. The field sediments were collected, incubated, and analyzed with respect to phosphorus fractionation of sediments and total phosphorus (TP) of overlying water after 7 days. The total amount of inorganic phosphorus of YS2 site was higher than YS1 site. Al-P and Fe-P were major constituents of inorganic phosphorus. During the incubation, Al-P, Fe-P and Ca-P were increased and Red-P was decreased at both sites. YS1 site showed increased TP concentration of overlying water, however, YS2 had opposite trend during the incubation. Counting on the particle size distribution of YS1 and YS2, particle size distribution is major factor to control the TP concentration of overlying water. There were positive relationship between Fe-P and TP and negative relationship between Red-P. From the results, it is essential to continuously monitor the sediment phosphorus fraction in order to control the TP concentration of the water.

  • Present study was to investigate the effect of dietary vegetable sources such as carrot, peahull and squash on mineral balance of Na, K, Ca, Fe, Cu, Zn and Mg in mice. It would also determine if the kind, level and feeding period of vegetables can affect the mineral balance. One hundred and thirty mice weighing $29{\sim}30g$(8 weeks of age) were randomly selected. Ten mice were fed their standard diet, and the others were divided into three experimental groups that were fed standard diet supplemented with carrot, peahull and squash. Mineral intake and urinary and fecal excretion of minerals were measured to investigate the effect of the kind, level and feeding period of vegetables on absorption rate and balance of minerals. Body-weight gain was increased in high peahull diet group compared to the control. No significant difference was observed for feed efficiency ratios between different experimental groups and urine volume was increased by vegetable fed group. Na, Ca, Fe, and Cu intake were lower in high squash-diet fed soup. K intake was higher in carrot fed mice, and Zn, and Mg intake were higher in peahull fed mice. Absorption rate and balance of mineral in control group resulted in positive balance while experimental groups showed negative. The kind of vegetable, feeding level and feeding period affected the intake of Na, K, Ca, Cu and absorption rate of Cu, Zn and balance of K, Cu, Zn to negative. In spite of the higher intake of t Zn and Mg, in experimental groups the absorption rate showed negative balance.

  • Many farmers have been seeking alternatives to chemical fertilizer for successful organic fruit production. This experiment was carried out to investigate the replaceability of chemical fertilizer by cover crop and slurry composting biofiltration (SCB) liquid manure (LM) application in pear orchard. Three treatments were contained in this experiment; cover crop only and cover crop + LM treatment, and control (chemical fertilizer application). Dry weight and mineral contents of gramineous cover crops were significantly increased in LM-combined treatments than that of leguminous species. Bulk density of soil was decreased in rye + LM and hairy vetch + LM treatments, compared with each cover crop treatment. Soil pH was lowest in fertilizer treatment and soil nitrate content became similar between treatments after rainy season. Available soil phosphate was lower in cover crop and cover crop + LM treatmemts than control, but exchangeable Mg was higher. The mineral content and net assimilation rate of leaves showed no difference between the treatments. As a result, it is suggested that the application of SCB liquid manure in pear orchard managed by cover crops is desirable to maintain the productivity by improving soil physical properties and potential nutrient recovery.

  • We investigated the anti-proliferative effects of solar salt and purified salt (PS) on HepG2 human hepatocellular cancer cells as well as their effects on mRNA and protein expression of apoptosis- and cell cycle-related genes, including Bcl-2, Bax, p53, and p21. Each salt sample suppressed cancer cell proliferation when treated at a concentration of 0.5% or 1%. Especially solar salt from T salt field (SS-T) and solar salt from Y salt field (SS-Y) significantly suppressed proliferation of cancer cells in comparison with PS. Treatment of HepG2 cells with salt samples at a concentration of 1% suppressed expression of Bcl-2 and promoted expression of Bax, p53, and p21 at the mRNA and protein levels in comparison with the control group. Inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) showed that SS-T and SS-Y had higher concentrations of Ca, Mg, S, and K than PS, and SS-T contained higher concentrations of these minerals than SS-Y. It seems that Na and mineral contents in solar salt may contribute to regulation of the genes. Taken together, salt, especially mineral rich solar salt, inhibits cancer cell growth by regulating apoptosis and cell cycle-related genes.
