  • The purpose of this study is to examine the uses and gratifications of the U. S. TV dramas favored by the Korean college students. The uses and gratifications of the U. S. TV dramas are also compared with the Korean TV dramas. In addition, this study analyzes how the motives and satisfactions of students on the U. S. dramas influence on watching patterns of the Korean TV dramas. The results of the factor analysis show that student's motives on watching the U. S. TV dramas are composed of four factors, such as 'Entertainment/Relaxation', 'Getting Information', 'Environment/Companionship', and 'Sexual curiosity'. In contrast, the motives of watching Korean TV dramas are composed of six factors, which are added 'Korean Drama Characteristics' and 'Habitual Time-Spending' to four factors of the U. S. dramas. After dividing the student groups with the heavy and the light watchers, this research shows that three out of five for the U. S. dramas are significantly different, whereas two out of six factors for the Korean counterparts. Finally, the uses and gratifications of the U. S. dramas favored by the Korean college students influence little on the watching patterns of the Korean TV dramas.

  • This study investigated the differences between active and inactive TV watching groups, in terms of residential characteristics, of class-oriented drama viewing rate. We compared Flow and Social Comparison Theories to explain the relationship between class-oriented contents in the drama and viewing rate. We collected 110,000 TV viewers data of 4 class-oriented and the other 4 dramas, aired between Feb. 2016 and March 2019, through D-Live local cable service provider. Controlling gender ratio and income level which may affect viewing rate, we found that class-oriented content significantly and positively affects viewing rate in active watching group while the same content significantly and negatively affects viewing rate in inactive watching group. These results imply that Flow and Social Comparison Theories may apply in opposite directions in different watching groups.

  • Increasing rate of late or deferred marriage in our society may have been inferred from alleged contribution of media use on people's idealistic expectations about marriage. This study examined the relationship between Korean-Chinese romance drama viewing and various sub-concepts of idealistic fantasy about marriage. Results from survey analysis indicate that although romance drama viewing has a positive association with life satisfaction, it was positively associated with various aspects of idealistic marriage fantasy (i.e., less materialism in marriage, more belief in love at first sight, and more unrealistic expectations on marriage). Further, differential cultivation effects of Korea and Chinese romance dramas were discussed.

  • With the increase of weight and influence of TV drama, many researchers began to publish papers on TV drama. However, those papers were mainly focused on social meaning and viewing motives and attitudes of TV audience. However, only a few papers researched about television image production techniques, such as 'Relationship between TV ratings and image production techniques', 'Transition process of TV drama's image production techniques', and 'Comparison of TV and film image production techniques'. According to the recent research on the relationship between TV ratings and image production techniques, TV rating is inverse proportionate to multiple camerawork and shot average duration with a very close relationship. The purpose of this thesis is to analyse the relationship between TV genre and image production technique with the data of top 100 of TNS Media Korea from the year 2004 to 2008. This paper found out that history drama uses more closeup, longshot, tracking and less waist shot than other genres, with shorter shot duration and longer scene duration.

Among TV programs, the most influential genre is drama, and reality programs that provide immersion with different characteristics from dramas influence viewers' choice of destination. CVM is mainly used for estimating the value of objects that cannot be evaluated in the market, such as tourist destinations. This study conducted an economic valuation of filming locations for dramas and travel entertainment programs using CVM, and then compared and analyzed the research results of the two filming locations. Linear and log logit analysis were performed to measure the willingness to pay for the filming location of the drama/travel entertainment program, and the payment amount was derived. The conclusion of the study is that as the travel cost required to visit the filming location of the drama/travel entertainment program increased, the intention to visit decreased. The amount payable when visiting the filming location of the drama/travel entertainment program was higher than the average consumption amount for a day trip, and the amount payable for the drama was higher than that of visiting the filming location of the travel entertainment program.
