  • We report the effect of the impurities including water and bromide in the propylmethylpyrrolidinium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (PMPyr-TFSI) on the electrochemical performance of lithium ion batteries. The several kinds of PMPyr-TFSI electrolytes with different amount of impurities are applied as the electrolyte to the cell with the high potential electrode, $LiNi_{0.5}Mn_{1.5}O_4$ spinel. It is found that the impurities in the electrolytes cause the detrimental effect on the cell performance by tracing the cycleability, voltage profile and Coulombic efficiency. Especially, the polarization and Coulombic efficiency go to worse by both impurities of water and bromide, but the cycleability was not highly influenced by bromide impurity unlike the water impurity.

  • A total of 18 surface sediments within the special conservation zone in the Masan Bay were analyzed to investigate the spatial distribution and polluted pathway of polybrominated diphenyl ehters(PBDEs). Twenty-two PBDE congeners were detected and brominated diphenyl ether-209 (BDE-209) among them was predominant. The concentrations of BDE-209 and ${\Sigma}_{21}$PBDEs (sum of 21 PBDE congeners without BDE-209) ranged from 2.32 to 64.2 ng/g and from 0.72 to 8.24 ng/g, respectively. The spatial distribution of both BDE-209 and ${\Sigma}_{21}$PBDEs showed a negative gradient from the inner to the outer Bay, indicating that the source of PBDEs might be mainly located inside the Bay such as streams and an effluent of wastewater treatment plants. It was seemed likely that the major parameters determining levels of PBDEs in the Masan Bay were the distance discharging from their sources as well as the characteristics and movement of sediments due to the flow of sea water.

  • The objective of this study was to understand the content characteristic of polybrominated biphenyl ethers in indoor household dust. Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are widely used as additive brominated flame retardants (BFR) in electrical and electronic equipment, and insulation in the indoor environment, and may be released indoors via volatilization or as dusts. The indoor household dust samples were collected from January to December in 2011 and measured for the concentrations, congener profiles and possible sources of PBDEs. The concentrations of 22 congeners of PBDEs (the sum of PBDEs 47, 49, 66, 71, 77, 85, 99, 100, 119, 126, 138, 153, 154, 156, 183, 184, 191, 196, 197, 206, 207 and 209) were 35.22~575.88 ng/g for apartment dust samples and 524.44 ng/g for laboratory dust sample. The eight congeners of BDE-47, 153, 183, 196, 197, 206, 207, and 209 are detected in the more than 1 ng/g. The three congeners of BDE-206, 207 and 209 in all dust samples were detected.

  • The reaction of phenylhydrazine with bromine in sulfuric acid solution has been studied kinetically. The pseudo-second-order rate constant is approximately inversely proportional to hydrogen-ion concentration when the concentration of sulfuric acid is lower than 1M. arom the study of the effect of potassium bromide concentration on the rate constant, it is concluded that both neutral bromine and tribromide ion participate in the reaction, the rate constants in 0.01M $H_2SO_4$ being $5{\times}10^5M^{-1},sec^{-1}\;and\;0. 7{\times}10^5M^{-1},sec^{-1}$, respectively at $20^{\circ}C$. The pseudo-second-order rate constant of 2.4-dinitrophenylhydrazine-bromine reaction is independent of hydrogen ion concentration. From the KBr addition experiment, the rate constants for $Br_2\;and\;Br_3^-$ were obtained as $1.2{\times}10^5M^{-1},sec^{-1}\;and\;2.0{\times}10^4M^{-1},sec^{-1}$, respectively.

  • Total 11 samples of sediments from the Geum river and the Nakdong river and its estuaries were analyzed to investigate the distribution characteristics of PBDEs and HBCD. Concentration of PBDEs in sediments ranged from 2.19~101.34 (average 30.70, median 20.91) ng/g-dw. The concentration range of PBDEs in river sediments is greater than those of estuary sediments. The HBCD concentration was ranged from N.D.~7.85 (average 1.47, median 0.32) ng/g-dw. HBCD concentrations compared with PBDEs are approximately 1/20 level, which is associated with low domestic usage. Isomer patterns of PBDEs and HBCD suggested that not only the use of commercial products, but the physicochemical properties of these materials, environmental degradation, and environmental behavior could affect the distribution characteristics of these chemicals and their isomers.

  • The solvolysis of substituted benzyl bromides was studied in binary solvent mixtures of acetone-water and ethanol-water at $25^{\circ}C$ and $45^{\circ}C$. The rate constants increase with electron-donating substituents in benzene ring and increasing of water contents in both of solvent mixtures. The sensitivity parameter (m) of the solvolysis of substituted benzyl bromides to solvent ionizing power (Y) was decreased in going from the electron-donating group to electron-withdrawing one, whereas their nucleophilic sensitivity increased continuously in going to above same substituents. It was shown that electron-donating (electron-withdrawing) groups make the transition state looser (tighter). The above results were consisted with the account for the potential energy surface model and the quantum mechanical approach.

  • Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) are chemical substances which persist in the environment, bioaccumulate through the food web, and pose a risk of causing adverse effects to human health and the environment. POPs are thermally stable, highly lipophilic and water-insoluble compounds which can induce various toxic influences including immunotoxicty, carcinogenicity adverse effects on reproduction, development and endocrine fuctions. Polybrominated diphenyl ethers or PBDEs, are organobromine compounds that are used as flame retardant. Because of their toxicity and persistence, the industrial production of some PBDEs is restricted under the Stockholm Convention, a treaty to control and phase out major POPs. In this study, PBDEs was measured in various site of Sihwa industrial complex to investigate concentration distribution of POPs. The levels of PBDEs in house dust samples were 0.722~44.024 ng/g-dry. In PBDEs congener, BDE-209 was relatively higher in the all sites. The concentration of BDE-209 measured over 80.0% of total PBDEs. In various site, high molecular PBDEs homologues are measured higher than low molecular.

  • Novel acidic ionic liquids, 1-(${\omega}$-sulfonicacid)propyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide ([$HSO_3$pmim]Br)and 1-(${\omega}$-sulfonicacid)butyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide ([$HSO_3$bmim]Br), were prepared and used as brominating agents, catalysts and solvents in the synthesis of 1,7-dibromoheptane, respectively. 1,7-dibromoheptan with a yield of 95% was obtained at $100^{\circ}C$ for 2 h by simple phase separation. The acidic ionic liquid [$HSO_3$pmim]Br was recycled for 5 times and the yield of 1,7-dibromoheptane did not decrease remarkably, which indicates that catalysts still maintain good selectivity and activity after recycling. The structure of the acidic ionic liquid [$HSO_3$pmim]Br was characterized with IR, and it was found that [$HSO_3$pmim]Br had stronger acidity than other ionic liquid.

  • The rates and activation parameters for the halide exchange reactions of substituted benzenesulfonylbromides (R-C$_{6}$H$_4$SO$_2$Br, R=p-MeO, p-$CH_3$, p-H, p-NO$_2$) in dry acetone at two temperatures were determined. It was found that the nucleophilicity order of Cl->I-$\geq$Br- for strong electron withdrawing-, and mild electron donating group, and of I-$\geq$Cl->Br- for strong electron donating group, Hammett plots showed slightly convoked characteristics which is similar to the plots of substituted benzenesulfonylchlorides, but contrary to the concaved nature for the halide exchange reactions of substituted benzyl chlorides. The rate of halogen exchange between benzenesulfonylbromide and lithium bromide decreased in the order of solvent : ($CH_3$)$_2$CO>$CH_3$CN》MeOH. The rates and activation parameters were also compared with those already known in the substituted benzenesulfonylchlorides. Theses were explained in terms of the structural properties of the transition state, and discussed the reaction mechanisms.s.
