A Study on Lean Combustion Characteristics with Hydrogen Addition in a Heavy Duty Natural Gas Engine (대형 천연가스엔진에서의 수소 첨가에 의한 희박연소특성 연구)

  • Natural gas is one of the most promising alternatives to gasoline and diesel fuels because of its high thermal efficiency and lower harmful emissions, including $CO_2$. However, the possibility of partial burn and misfire makes the benefits of natural gas fueled engine worse under lean burn operation condition, Hydrogen addition can promote the combustion characteristics while reduces emissions extremely. In this study, the effect of hydrogen addition on an engine performance was investigated. The results showed that thermal efficiency was increased due to the expansion of lean operation range under stable operation. NOx emission can be significantly reduced with the small increase in HC or CO emissions.

Experimental Investigation on Combustion Characteristics of Liquid Kerosene and Gelled Kerosene Using Shear Coaxial Injector (전단동축인젝터를 이용한 액상 케로신 및 젤 케로신의 연소특성에 대한 실험적 연구)

  • In this study, a hot-firing test of a lab-scale gel rocket motor using liquid kerosene and gelled kerosene as fuel was performed in order to analyze the discrepancy of the static and dynamic pressure between the two fuels. The static pressure, characteristic velocity, and characteristic velocity efficiency of the liquid kerosene and gelled kerosene did not show any significant difference. However, in the case of dynamic pressure characteristics, the pressure oscillation amplitude in a specific high frequency region of the gelled kerosene demonstrated a significantly higher amplitude than liquid kerosene case. This is considered to be the effect of an intrinsic combustion mechanism of the gel propellant, and it can be postulated that this may act as a dominant factor influencing the high frequency combustion instability of the gel rocket motor.

  • This research proposes a method to control combustion instability in a gas turbine combustor having an annular combustor form and compares the effect of flow symmetric braking through nozzle arrangement and the corresponding change in equivalent ratio. To this end, the symmetry breaking effect was confirmed through mode analysis of FFT, Time signal, and phase trajectory. In addition, the unstable area and the stable area were identified through mode analysis, and this was shown on the contour map. The present research shows that instability occurs when the equivalent ratio and the arrangement of the nozzles are symmetry or when the nozzles are continuously arranged, but if the arrangement and equivalent ratio are not symmetry, the combustion instability decreases dramatically even if the difference in the equivalent ratio is small.

  • One method to analyse acoustic modes is proposed to predict the characteristics of acoustic instability in liquid rocket engine. It is based on the similarity between transverse acoustic modes and adopts two-dimensional axisymmetric geometry. Using this method, the first tangential mode in the prototype combustor can be analysed through the analysis of the first radial mode in the model combustor with doubled chamber diameter. Sample numerical calculation is demonstrated applying this method to sample rocket engine and thereby acoustic instabilities of the engine are investigated. The present results show a good agreement with the previous findings. The numerical analysis based on the proposed method is cost-effective and serves as the first approximation to the true solution.

  • The results are shown highly unstable mode's detonation dynamics by compared with weakly unstable mode. And we investigate the difference and similar features of 2D and 3D results. By using PSD via FFT, the effects of pre-exponential factor difference and of unstable mode were investigated in this study. The result of PSD is shown pulsed features in weakly unstable mode, but noselike in highly unstable mode. By compared between Sheliren image and overlaid slice image, the irregular feature of detonation waves structure was discussed in highly unstable mode.

  • A series of computational simulations have been carried out for non-reacting and reacting flows in a supersonic combustor configuration with and without a cavity. Transverse injection of hydrogen, a simplest form of fuel supply, is considered in the present study with the injection pressure of 0.5 and 1.0 ㎫. The corresponding equivalence ratios are 0.17 and 0.33. The work features detailed resolution of the flow and flame dynamics in the combustor, which was not typically available in most of the previous studies. In particular, oscillatory flow characteristics are captured at a scale sufficient to identify the underlying physical mechanisms. Much of the flow unsteadiness is related not only to the cavity, but also to the intrinsic unsteadiness in the flowfield. The interactions between the unsteady flow and flame evolution may cause a large excursion of flow oscillation. The role of the cavity, injection pressure, and amount of heat addition are examined systematically.

  • The phenomena called "combustion instabilities" in a solid-propellant rocket motor may be viewed as sustaining or amplifying pressure waves. Energy is supplied by combustion processes near the surface of the burning propellant. T-burner method is used to determine the response function of the propellant to the pressure wave. But initial tests were failed because of the Helmholtz resonation inside the T-burner. Acoustic analysis of the original T-burner is carried out and suppression techniques for the Helmholtz oscillation are introduced.ntroduced.

  • A linear acoustic analysis has been performed to elucidate damping characteristics of acoustic cavities in a liquid rocket combustor. Results have shown that resonant frequencies of acoustic cavity obtained by classical theoretic approach and by the present linear analysis are somewhat different with each other. This difference is attributed to the limitation of the simplified classical theory. To quantify the damping characteristics, acoustic impedance has been introduced and resultant absorption coefficient and conductance have been evaluated. Satisfactory agreement has been achieved with previous experiment. Finally the design procedure for an optimal tuning of acoustic cavity has been established.

  • This study has investigated the relationship between heat release fluctuations and the flow perturbations in a partially premixed gas turbine combustor using a commercial CFD code. Special focus of the current work is placed on the effect of equivalence ratio on the flame dynamics in a partially-premixed system. As the first step for this combustion dynamics study in the non-perfectly premixed combustor, flame behaviors are modeled and then compared with measured results under both steady and unsteady conditions. The calculated results of the flame transfer function with equivalence ratio fluctuation are found to well capture the main qualitative characteristics of the combustion dynamics for the partially-premixed flames.

  • Acoustic characteristics in an industrial gas-turbine combustor are numerically investigated by adopting linear acoustic analysis. Spatially non-homogeneous temperature field in the combustor is considered in the numerical calculation and the characteristics are analyzed in view of acoustic instability. Acoustic analysis are conducted in the combustors without and with acoustic resonator, which is one of combustion stabilization devices. It has been reported that severe pressure fluctuation frequently occurs in the adopted combustor, and the measured signal of pressure oscillation is compared with the acoustic-pressure response from the numerical calculation. The numerical results are in a good agreement with the measurement data. In this regard, the phenomenon of pressure fluctuation in the combustor could be caused by acoustic instability. The acoustic effects of the resonators are analyzed in the viewpoints of both the frequency tuning and the damping capacity.
