Numerical Study on Dynamic Behavior of Diffusive-Thermal Instability in $CH_4/O_2$ Conterflow Diffusion Flames (메탄/산소 대향류 확산화염에서 확산-열 불안정으로 인한 화염의 거동에 관한 수치적 연구)

  • Dynamic behavior of diffusive-thermal instability in diluted $CH_4/O_2$ diffusion flames is numerically investigated by adopting detailed chemistry and transport. Counterflow diffusion flame is adopted as a model flamelet. Particular attention is focused on the pulsating-instability regime, which arises for Lewis numbers greater than unity, and the instability occurs at high strain rate near extinction condition in this flame configuration. Once a steady flame structure is obtained for a prescribed value of initial strain rate. transient solution of the flame is calculated after a finite amount of strain-rate perturbation is imposed Oil the steady flame. Transient evolution of the flame depends on the initial strain rate and the amount of perturbed strain rate. Basically, the dynamic behaviors can be classified into two types, namely non-oscillatory decaying solution and diverging solution leading to extinction. The peculiar oscillatory solution. which has been found in the previous study adopting one-step chemistry and constant Lewis numbers, is not observed in this study, which is attributed to both convective flow and preferential diffusion effects.

  • Combustion instability is one of the most difficult problems in the development of liquid rocket engines. One of the damping devices for combustion instability is helmholtz resonator. Orifice length is one of factors for designing it. In this study, effects of orifice length are investigated by an experimental tests and a linear acoustic analysis. Damping capacity was improved by the increase of the length of resonator. And the results of an experimental tests and a linear acoustic analysis are showed similar tendency. Also, effects of supplied SPL(sound pressure level) are investigated and the results show that nonlinear effects are increase by the increase of supplied SPL.

  • The thermo-acoustic instability in the combustion process of a gas turbine is caused by the interaction of the heat release mechanism and the pressure perturbation. These acoustic vibrations cause fatigue failure of the combustor and decrease the combustion efficiency. This study is to develop a segmented dynamic thermo-acoustic model to understand combustion instability of gas turbine. Therefore, this study required a dynamic analysis rather than static analysis, and developed a segmented model that can analyze the performance of the system over time using the Matlab/Simulink. The developed model can confirm the thermo-acoustic combustion instability and exhaust gas concentration in the combustion chamber according to the equivalent ratio change, and confirm the thermo-acoustic combustion instability for the inlet temperature and the load changes. As a result, segmented dynamic thermo-acoustic model has been developed to analyze combustion instability under the operating condition.

  • Studies to investigate the influence on hydraulic acoustic wave were conducted using pressure swirl atomizer under making frequency range from 0 to 60Hz using water as a propellant. Pressure oscillation from hydraulic sources gives a strong influences on atomization and mixing processes. The ability to drive these low frequency pressure oscillations makes spray characteristics changeable. The effect of pressure perturbation and its spray characteristics showed that low injector pressure with pressure pulsation gives more significantly than high injector pressure with pressure perturbation in SMD, spray cone angle, breakup length. Moreover, this data could be used for prediction of low combustion instability getting G factor.

  • Flame transfer function is used to determine the relationship between flow fluctuations and heat release perturbations in a lean premixed gas turbine combustor. The characteristics of flame transfer function are known to depend greatly on flame geometries in addition to other various flow conditions. However, it is not easy to experimentally measure the flame transfer function under various actual combustor operating conditions in terms of time and cost. The current research tries to model the flame transfer function using CFD(Computational Fluid Dynamics). From the results, it is shown that the calculated steady flame geometry can be exactly captured with consideration of the wall heat transfer and radiations. Also, unsteady analysis results show the close characteristics of the flame transfer function to the measured one in both gain and phase.

  • In this study, 1D and 3D thermoacoustic analysis model were developed in order to predict fundamental characteristics of combustion instability in a gas turbine lean premixed combustor. The 1D network model can be used to analyze frequency and growth rate of combustor instability by simply dividing whole system into a couple of acoustic sub-elements, while the 3D Helmholtz solver model can predict directly acoustic modes as well as basic properties of combustion instability. Prediction results of both 1D and 3D models generally showed a good agreement with the measurements, even if there was a slight overestimation for instability range.

  • This paper presents the methods and examples of proper orthogonal decomposition analysis for the understanding of high speed flame movements induced by combustion instabilities in a gas turbine. Phase resolved high-speed flame images were obtained from the combustion test of an industrial gas turbine at the rate of 2000 frame per second, and were utilized for the proper orthogonal decomposition. This analyzing method provided useful information regarding combustion instability characteristics bringing alleviation idea of the instabilities, such as principle modes of flame movement and their energy fractions which mean by which modes and how much the flame coherent structures are composed.

  • In this paper a method for finding solution of acoustic, vortex and entropy wave-equations in a cylindrical tube with variable section area was suggested under the consideration of that the high frequency instability in a rocket engine combustion chamber is an acoustic phenomena, which is coupled with combustion reaction, and that a combustion chamber and exhaust nozzle are usually shaped cylindrically. As a consequence of that some method, which enable the quantitative analysis of the influence of entropy and vortex waves to acoustic wave, was suggested.

  • A 3D FEM (Finite Element Method) based Helmholtz solver has been commonly used to characterize fundamental acoustic behavior and investigate dynamic instability features in many combustion systems. In this approach, a geometrical simplification of the target system has been generally made in order to reduce computational time and cost because a real combustor and fuel nozzle have a very complicated flow passage. The feasibility of these simplifications is quantitatively investigated in a small aero gas turbine nozzle in term of acoustic characteristics. It is found that the simplification in a nozzle geometry during the 3D FEM analysis process has no great influence on the acoustic modeling results, while the calculation complexity can be improved for a similar modeling accuracy.

  • In this research, a network model was developed to predict combustion instability in an annular gas turbine combustor (GT24) for power generation. The model consisted of various acoustic elements such as several ducts and area changes which could represent a real combustor with a complex geometry, applied mass, momentum, and energy equations to each element. In addition, a one-dimensional network model through a cylindrical coordinate system has been proposed to predict various acoustic modes. As a result of the analysis, the key resonant frequencies such as longitudinal, circumferential, and complex modes were derived from the EV combustor of GT24, and the reliability of the current model was verified through comparison with the 3D Helmholtz solver.
