  • This paper is focused on a simplified measurement of rail irregularity by some axle-box accelerometers for high-speed rail condition monitoring with in-service high-speed trains. Generally, the rail condition monitoring has been done by a special railway inspection vehicle with a 10m versine method. But, the monitoring method needs some expensive measurement system, and have been performed only at night due to its speed limit. In this research, a simplified measurement of rail irregularity using axle-box accelerometers is proposed to monitor the rail condition with in-service high-speed trains. The acceleration is measured by using two accelerometers on a axle-box, and stored in an on-board data acquisition system. The displacement is estimated from the acceleration data by a combination of Kalman filter and the frequency selective filter. The estimated results are compared with the measurement from a laser rail inspection system which is near the axle-box. From the comparison, the proposed method shows promise as a tool for the simplified measurement of rail irregularity at high-speed.

  • This study investigates structural, fatigue and modal analyses at bicycle suspension seat post. When weight is applied to the saddle, models 1 and 2 have the weakest strength at the part connected with saddle. And model 2 is greater total deformation and equivalent stress than model 1. Among the cases of nonuniform fatigue loads at models 1 and 2, 'SAE bracket history' with the severest change of load becomes most unstable but 'Sample history' becomes most stable. In case of 'Sample history' with the average stress of 0 to $-10^4MPa$ and the amplitude stress of 0 to $10^4MPa$, the possibility of maximum damage becomes 4%. This stress state can be shown with 5 to 7times more than the damage possibility of 'SAE bracket history' or 'SAE transmission'. Model 1 has better impulse relaxation and passenger sensitivity than model 2. The structural result of this study can be effectively utilized with the design of bicycle suspension seat post by investigating prevention and durability against its damage.

  • This study analyzes stress, fatigue and vibration at clutch on the rotation of wheel. Eigenfrequencies from 1'st to 6'th order about clutch assembly are shown with the vibration at more than 800Hz. Maximum equivalent stress is shown with the frequency of 800Hz in case of the harmonic vibration applied with force. Among the cases of nonuniform fatigue loads, 'SAE bracket history' with the severest change of load becomes most unstable but 'Sample history' becomes most stable. In case of 'Sample History' with the average stress of 0MPa to $-10^5$ MPa and the amplitude stress of 0MPa to $10^5$ MPa, the possibility of maximum damage becomes 3.23%. This stress state can be shown with 6 times more than the damage possibility of 'SAE bracket history' or 'SAE transmission'. The structural result of this study can be effectively utilized with the safe design of clutch.

  • Wind turbulence data is required for engineering calculations of gust speeds, mean and fluctuating loading. Spectral densities are required as input data for methods used in assessing dynamic response. This study is concerned with the estimation of daily instantaneous maximum wind velocity in the meteorological major cities (selected each 6 points) during the yearly 1987-2016.12.1. The purpose of this paper is to present the power spectral densities of the daily instantaneous maximum wind velocity. In the processes of analysis, used observations data obtained at Korea Meteorological Adminstration(KMA), it is assumed as a random processes. From the analysis results, in the paper estimated power spectral densities function(Blunt model) shows a very closed with von Karman and Solari's spectrum models.

  • Due to the constantly varying sea-state with which any wave energy conversion device must contend in order to extract energy efficiently , the ability to control the device's position relative to the incident waves is critical in achieving the creation of a truly functional and economical wave energy device. In this paper, the authors will propose methodology based on the theory of a variable structure system to utilize a three dimensional source distribution as a model to estimate anticipated surge, sway and yaw of a wave energy conversion device relative to varying angles and characteristics of incident waves and there from derive a feedback to a sliding mode controller which would reposition the device so as to maximize its ability to extract energy from waves in constantly varying ocean conditions.

  • This paper is focused on a relationship between the noise and vibration of a wheelset and the railway irregularity of a high speed railway using a time-varying frequency transform for a preliminary research of the railway condition monitoring by an in-service high-speed railway vehicle. Generally, the monitoring has been performed by a special railway inspection vehicle or industrial engineers for railway maintenance. However, they have been limited at night due to the in-service high-speed railway vehicles, and too slow to monitor all of the section. To solve this problem, the monitoring should be performed by an in-service high-speed railway vehicle. For the research, the noise and vibration of a wheelset are utilized, because they are closely related to the railway condition. They are measured by using some microphones and accelerometers, and stored in an on-board data acquisition system. The signals are post-processed by a time-varying frequency analysis and compared with the result of a railway geometry and profile measurement system. From the comparison, it is able to observe the relationship between the noise and vibration of a wheelset and the irregularity of a high-speed railway. Also, some distinct frequency components are observed, which are not observed in the railway geometry and profile.

  • A Seismic analysis procedure of bi-directional brideg motions is developed by using mechanical bridge model. A three-dimensional mechanical model can consider major phenomena under bi-directional seismic excitations, such as nonlinear pier motion under biaxial bending, pounding and bearing damage due to the rotaion of the superstructure, etc. The analyses utilizing the uni-directional and the bi-directional bridge model for the 3-span simply supported bridge are then performed. The seismic responses in two cases are examined and compared by investigating the relative displacements of each superstructure to both ground and adjacent superstructures and the restoring forces of RC pier. The analysis using either the uni-directional model or bi-directional model is acceptable for estimating the displacement responses of a bridge, but the bi-directional analysis is found to give more conservative results for resisting forces of RC piers. To make general conclusions, therefore, the analysis using the bi-directional bridge model should be performed in evaluating the seismic safety of bridges.

  • In this study, two models due to the configuration of ripper at excavator are investigated by structural and fatigue analyses. The maximum stress and deformation are happened at the axis connected with the body of working device and the direct working part respectively. Model 1 is thought to have more structural durability than model 2. Fatigue life or damage in case of 'SAE bracket history' whose load change is most severest among non-uniform fatigue loads is shown to become most unstable. But life or damage in case of 'Sample history' whose load change is slowest among non-uniform fatigue loads is shown to become most stable. These study results can be effectively utilized with the design of ripper at excavator by anticipating and investigating prevention and durability against its fatigue damage.

  • Recently, offshore wind farms are increasingly expected, because there are huge resource and large site in offshore. Jeju island has optimum condition for constructing a wind energy farm. Unlike the mainland, Jeju island has stratified structure distribution between rock layers sediments due to volcanic activation. In these case, it can be occur engineering problems in whole structures as well as the safety of foundation as the thickness and distribution of sediment under top rock layer can not support sufficiently the structure. In this paper, the settlement and stress distribution is predicted by numerical analysis when the mono-pile base are constructed on various soft layer between stratified structure. To determine the settlement of the pile foundation supported on stratified rock layer, the geological investigation at the 3 regiions and the results of laboratory experiments of the stratified rock layer is required.

  • When buoyant objects appear in contents, it is helpful in developing contents to express their attributes such as their length, width, weight, and velocity, and the magnitude and direction of regular waves dynamically. Therefore, we verify how the attributes of buoyant objects and the characteristics of waves cause the heaving motion of buoyant objects to change by using the equation of motion used in the naval architecture and ocean engineering. Our research results may help contents developers to develop contents with buoyant objects even if they do not understand the naval architecture and ocean engineering well. We show that we can calculate the motion of buoyant objects dynamically even if the velocity of buoyant objects or the characteristics of waves change dynamically. In the future, we will study how buoyant objects move on the irregular waves, and develop engines for buoyant objects on the real sea.
