  • Effective thermal conductivity of the porous nuclear fuel has been investigated numerically. Difficulties associated with irregular shape of pore have been overcome by using the Body Fitted Coordinate Systems. A computer code has been developed to solve the governing equation with appropriate boundary conditions by transforming from the Cartesian coordinates to the nonorthogonal curvilinear coordinates. The effects of the porosity have been investigated. For a convenient use of the result, a correlation equation was suggested under the assumption of circular pore. The computation results by the assumption of randomly oriented elliptic pore has been agreed more closely to existing experimental result than that by the assumption of circular pore.

  • A combined experimental and numerical effort is presented for investigation of reflection of irregular waves due to rectangular submerged breakwaters. In the numerical model, the Reynolds equations are solved by a finite difference method and k-$\varepsilon$ model is employed for the turbulence analysis. To track the free surface displacement, the volume of fluid method is employed. Numerical predictions of transmission and reflection coefficients are verified by comparing to laboratory measurements. Very reasonable agreements are observed. The reflection coefficients become stronger in proportion to numbers of submerged breakwaters.

  • The nonlinear modal interaction of an autoparametric system under a broadband random excitation is investigated. The specific system examined is an autoparametric vibration absorber with internal resonance, which is typical of many common structural configurations. By means of Gaussian closure scheme the dynamic moment equations explaining the random responses of the system are reduced to a system of autonomous ordinary differential equations of the first and second moments. In view of equilibrium solutions of this system and their stability we examine the system responses. We could not find the destabilizing effect of damping, which was reported in References (18) and (20). The saturation phenomenon, which is well known in deterministic nonlinear system, did not take place lot this system subject to broadband random excitation.

  • Dose rate regulated tracking is known to be an efficient method which adaptively delivers tracking treatments when patient breathing is irregular. The Motion Management Interface (MMI, Varian Medical System, CA), which provides beam on/off switching during treatment is available for clinic. Study is to test if delivering the adaptive tumor tracking is feasible for irregular breathing using beam switching with MMI. 55 free breathing RPM traces acquired from lung cancer patients are used. The first day RPM traces of the patients are utilized to design preprogrammed tracking MLC patterns, of which periods are intentionally reduced by 20% in order to catch up the variation of patient breathing irregularity in the treatment day. Eligibility criteria for this technique are the variation of amplitude and period less than 20%. An algorithm which determines beam on/off every 100 ms by considering the preprogrammed (MLC) positions and current breathing positions is developed. Tracking error and delivery efficacy are calculated by simulating the beam-switching adaptive tracking from the RPM traces. Breathing patterns of 38 patients (70%) met the eligibility criteria. Tracking errors of all of the cases who meet the criteria are less than 2 mm (average 1.4 mm) and the average delivery efficacy was 71%. Those of rest of the cases are 1.9 mm and 48%. Adaptive tracking with beam switching is feasible if patient selection is based on the eligibility criteria.

  • In this study, the reliability design method developed by Hanzawa et al. in 1996 for calculation of the expected damage to armor blocks of a horizontally composite breakwater is extended to take into account the variability in wave direction such as directional spreading of waves, obliquity of the design principal wave direction from the shore-normal direction, and its variation about the design value. To calculate the transformation of random directional waves. the model developed by Kweon et al. in 1997 is used instead of Goda's model, which was developed in 1975 for unidirectional random waves normally incident to a straight coast with parallel depth contours and has been used by Hanzawa et al. It was found that the variability in wave direction had great influence on the computed expected damage to armor blocks. The previous design, which disregarded wave directionality, could either overestimate or underestimate the expected damage by a factor of two depending on water depth and seabed slope, if the assumption of the present study that the stability formula for breakwater armor blocks proposed for normal incidence can be used for obliquely incident waves is valid.

  • The first-arrival traveltime calculation method based on the damped wave equation overcomes the shortcomings of ray-tracing methods. Since this algorithm needs to solve the damped wave equation, numerical modeling is essential. However, it is not desirable to use the finite-difference method (FDM), which has good computational efficiency, for simulating the land seismic data because of irregular topography. Thus, the finite-element method (FEM) which requires higher computational cost than FDM has been used to correctly describe the irregular topography. In this study, we computed first-arrival traveltimes in an irregular topographic model using FDM incorporating embedded boundary method (EBM) to overcome this problem. To verify the accuracy and efficiency of the proposed algorithm, we compared our results with those of FEM. As a result, the proposed method using EBM not only provided the same accuracy as the FEM but also showed the improved computational efficiency.

  • To accurately estimate nearshore current in shallow water regions. it is necessary to investigate the irregular wave transformation characteristics and radiation stress produced by random sea waves. This research is to investigate the application or the individual wave Analysis Method. the Component Wave Analysis Method and Representative Wave Analysis Method in the shallow water region. These methods were estimated by wave shallowing transformation when the waves propagate from deep water to shallow water region b)r generating regular waves, two component waves and irregular waves (Bretschneider-Mitsuyasu type). That is, the Indivisual Wave Analysis Method is to investigate from the viewpoint of shallow water transformation of wave statistical characteristics and their zero-down-crossing waves (wave height period and wave celerity). And the component Wave Analysis Method is to investigate from the view point of shallow water transformation of basic frequency component wave and their interference frequency component wave. In addition, this research is to compare the measured mean water level elevation with the calculated one from radiation stress of irreguar waves that is assumed in the three methods above.

  • This study uses a continuous autoregressive (CAR) model to analyze daily average temperature in six Korean metropolitan cities. Data period is Jan. 1, 1954 to Dec. 31, 2010 covering 57 years. Using a relative long time series reveals that the linear time trend components are all statistically significant in the six cities, which was not shown in previous studies. Particularly the plus sign of its coefficient implies the effect on Korea of the global warming. Unit-root test results are that the temperature time series are stationary without unit-root. It turns out that CAR(3) is suitable for stochastic component of the daily temperature. Since developing suitable continuous stochastic model of the underlying weather related variables is crucial in pricing the weather derivatives, the results in this study will likely prove useful in further future studies on pricing weather derivatives.

  • In this paper we developed a novel system for automatic detection of mass type breast cancer on dense digital mammogram images. The new approaches presented in this paper are as follows: 1) we presented a method that stably decides the mass center and radius without being affected by image signal irregularity. 2) We developed a radial directional filter that is suitable to process mass image signal. 3) And we developed the multiple feature function based on mass shape spiculation, mass center homogeneity, and mass eccentricity, so as to determine mass-type breast cancer. When the proposed system is applied to dense mammographic images, the true 기arm rate is improved by 10% over a conventional system while the false alarm is increased by 1 per image.
