  • The interaction between wall blowing and oxidizer flow can generate a very complicated flow characteristics in combustion chamber of hybrid rockets. LES analysis was conducted with an in-house CFD code to investigate the features of turbulent flow without chemical reactions. The numerical results reveal that the flow oscillations at a certain frequency exists on the fuel surface, which is analogous to those observed in the solid propellant combustion. However, the observation of oscillating flow at a certain frequency is only limited to a very thin layer adjacent to wall surface and the strength of the oscillation is not strong enough to induce the drastic change in temperature gradient on the surface. The visualization of fluctuating pressure components shows the periodic appearance of relatively high and low pressure regions along the axial direction. This subsequently results in the oscillation of flow at a certain fixed frequency. This implies that the resonance phenomenon would be possible if the external disturbances such as acoustic excitation could be imposed to the oscillating flow in the combustion chamber.

  • POD analysis has been done to investigate the internal flow characteristics using LES calculation results of hybrid rocket combustion chamber. The special emphasis was put on the change in the mode energy distribution caused by the installation of diaphragm compared to the baseline case. Also the comparison was made to investigate the effect of wall blowing on the changes in the mode energy between the regions near and far from the diaphragm. For baseline case, POD results clearly distinguish the primary mode containing most of flow energy from the rest of flow modes (2-9 mode) depicting small scale modes. Also, the increase in the energy of flow modes 2-5 is responsible for the formation of relatively large scale structures due to diaphragm. In addition, the comparison of mode energy distributions of flow fields with diaphragm shows similar patterns in both wall blowing and no blowing case. This implies that the local increase in regression rate just after the diaphragm is directly associated with the increase in energy distributions of 2-5 modes.

  • Recent experimental data shows that the noticeable feature of irregular roughened spots on the fuel surface occurs during the combustion test. The generation of these unexpected patterns is likely to be resulted from the disturbed boundary layer due caused by wall blowing which is intended to simulate the process of fuel vaporization. LES without chemical reaction was conducted to investigate the flow characteristics at the near-fuel surface and the behavior of turbulent structures which is evolved by the wall blowing at the Reynolds number of 23,000. Cylindrical geometry was considered to get the most reality of the calculation results because real hybrid rocket motor is circular grain configuration. It was shown that the wall blowing pushed turbulent structures upwards making them tilted and this skewed displacement, in effect, left the foot prints of the structures on the surface. This change of kinematics may explain the formation of irregular isolated spots on the fuel surface observed in the experiment.

  • Detailed flowfield resulting from the secondary sonic gas injection into a divergent section of supersonic conical nozzle has been numerically investigated. The three-dimensional flowfield associated with the bow-shock/boundary-layer interaction inside the nozzle has been solved by Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations with an algebraic and $\kappa$-$\varepsilon$ turbulence model. The numerical results have been compared with the experimental results for the identical flow conditions, and it is shown that the comparison is satisfactory Effects of different injection pressures of the secondary jet on the shock/boundary-layer interactions and the overall flow structure inside the nozzle have been investigated. The vortex structures behind the shock interaction and wall pressure variations have also been studied.

  • A computational study on the supersonic flow around the lateral jet controlled missile has been performed. For this purpose a three dimensional Navier-Stokes computer code(AADL3D) has been developed and case studies have been performed by comparing the normal force coefficient and the moment coefficient of a missile body for different jet flow conditions including jet pressure and jet Mach number. The results show different behavior of normal force and moment variation according to jet pressure variation and jet Mach number variation. From the detailed flow field analyses, it is verified that most of the normal force loss and the pitching moment generation are taken place at the low-pressure region behind the jet nozzle. Furthermore, it is shown that the pitching moment can be efficiently reduced by obtaining the lateral thrust through higher jet Mach number rather than through high jet pressure.

  • A safety valve has a valve mechanism for the automatic release of gas from piping system when the pressure exceeds preset limit cause of a defect of a pressure regulator, condensation of water in a pipe. Therefore, for the safety of pressure regulating station, it is essential to study the flow regime and characteristics of safety valve. This article presents the numerical analysis on the flow analysis, the ejection capacity and required effective discharge area of the safety valve that is established in pressure regulating station. Then, the results are compared and analyzed with domestic and foreign regulations such as API(America Petroleum Institute), EN(European Standard), and NF(Norme Francise). Moreover, the installation number of safety valve is considered by using domestic and foreign regulations and maximum reguired effective discharge area of safety valve.

  • Recent experimental data shows that the noticeable feature of irregular roughened spots on the fuel surface occurs during the combustion test with PMMA/GOX in the hybrid rocket motor. The generation of these unexpected patterns is likely to be resulted from the disturbed boundary layer due caused by wall blowing which is intented to simulate the process of fuel vaporization. LES technique was implemented to investigate both the flow characteristics near fuel surface and the subsequent evolution of turbulence modified by the wall blowing. Simple channel geometry instead of circular grain configuration was used for the investigation without chemical reactions in order to allow for a focused examination on the near-wall behavior at the Reynolds number of 22,500. It was shown that the wall blowing pushed turbulent structures upwards making them tilted and this skewed displacement, in effect, left the foot prints of the structures on the surface. This change of kinematics may explain the formation of irregular isolated spots on the fuel surface observed in the experiment.

  • The hybrid rocket shows interesting characteristics of complicated mixing layer developed by the interaction between turbulent oxidizer flow and injected surface mass flow from fuel vaporization. In this study, the compressible LES was conducted to explore the physical phenomena of surface oscillatory flow induced by the flow interferences in a duct domain. From the numerical results, the wall injection generates the stronger streamwise vorticites and the negative components of axial velocity accompanied with the azimuthal vorticity near the surface. And the vortex shedding with a certain time scale was found to be developed by hydrodynamic instability in the mixing layer. The pressure fluctuations in this calculation exhibit a peculiar peak at a specific angular frequency($\omega$=8.8) representing intrinsic oscillation due to the injection.

  • In order to determine the enthalpy profile in the high temperature transpiration cooling test facility for the air-breating engine compartments, theoretical calculation and measurement for the flow of the test section are performed. The mass averaged enthalpy value determined by the heat balance and sonic throat methods is 10 MJ/kg. The centerline enthalpy value measured using the slug type copper calorimeter is 15 MJ/kg. Typically, the ratio of centerline and mass averaged enthalpy should be varies from 1.4 to 4. This facility has lower bound of enthalpy profile. It will be effective in testing of high temperature transpiration cooling.
