The diesel engine is one of the most effective transport options available in all sizes and covering a wide range of applications. But, many researchers developing the diesel engine are facing tough challenges in view of the increasingly lower emissions standards. Thus, this study will explore the possible fuel additive technology to further reduce the emissions from the IDI diesel engine. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of oxygenated fuels on the exhaust emissions and to attain a better trade-off relation between smoke and NOx in four cylinder diesel engine. Experiments were conducted with oxygenated fuels as an effective way to improve the combustion efficiency. Some of oxygenated fuel(Diglyme and DEE) were added to the conventional diesel fuel which had no an oxygen content. Also, EGR was adopted for reducing NOx without any strong adverse effects on other exhaust emissions. This study concluded that exhaust emissions in diesel engine could be reduced by adding the oxygenated fuels which had lower boiling point, and the combustion efficiency was also improved as the oxygen content in fuel increased.

The investigation was conducted to analyze the exhaust emission characteristics in diesel engine according to intake air mass flow. In this study, the test diesel engine with a 5,899 cubic centimeter displacement and power of the 260 ps was used to analyze the emission characteristics according to the intake air mass flow. In addition, the test modes were applied by the ND-13 and ETC mode. In order to analyze the emission characteristics, the engine dynamometer with 440 kW and emission gas analyzer (AMA-4000) were utilized. From the experimental results, it is revealed that the NOx and HC emissions in the intake air mass flow of large amount have high levels compared to those in the intake air mass flow of small amount in the ND-13 mode. However, the PM emission was shown the opposite trend in the NOx and HC emission due to the trade-off relation between the NOx and PM.
In this study, the effects of MTBE contents as oxygenates in gasoline on exhaust emissions and fuel economy in MPI and GDi vehicles have been investigated. Various oxygen contents have been selected such as 0, 1.0, 2.3 and 2.7 wt%. FTP-75 and HWFET modes as fuel economy test methods which are widely used in Republic of Korea and US were applied to investigate exhaust emissions from the test vehicles. Emissions of CO, NMHC and NOx did not show significant correlation with oxygen contents in gasoline fuels, although having slight difference with these contents. In addition, CO2 emissions were not significantly changed with respect to oxygen content. But in case of warm-up and FTP-75 and HWFET modes including high speed regimes, CO2 emissions showed inverse correlation with oxygen contents. Particulate number concentration was inversely proportional to the oxygen contents, having the minimum value at the condition of 2.3 wt%. In case of fuel economy through carbon balance method, the highest value has been obtained at 2.3 wt% and there was positive correlation with oxygen contents and fuel economy.
Laboratory scale experiments were performed to investigate the removal efficiency of the in-situ chemical oxidation method and the air-sparging method for diesel contaminated soil and groundwater. Two kinds of diesel contaminated soils (TPH concentration : 2,401 mg/kg and 9,551 mg/kg) and groundwater sampled at Busan railroad station were used for the experiments. For batch experiments of chemical oxidation by using 50% hydrogen peroxide solution, TPH concentration of soil decreased to 18% and 15% of initial TPH concentration. For continuous column experiments, more than 70% of initial TPH in soil was removed by using soil flushing with 20% hydrogen peroxide solution, suggesting that most of diesel in soil reacted with hydrogen peroxide and degraded into $CO_2$ or $H_2O$ gases. Batch experiment for the air-sparging method with artificially contaminated groundwater (TPH concentration : 810 mg/L) was performed to evaluate the removal efficiency of the air-sparging method and TPH concentration of groundwater decreased to lower than 5 mg/L (waste water discharge tolerance limit) within 72 hours of air-sparging. For box experiment with diesel contaminated real soil and groundwater, the removal efficiency of air-sparging was very low because of the residual diesel phase existed in soil medium, suggesting that the air-sparging method should be applied to remediate groundwater after the free phase of diesel in soil medium was removed. For the last time, the in-situ box experiment for a unit process mixed the chemical oxidation process with the air-sparging process was performed to remove diesel from soil and groundwater at a time. Soil flushing with 20% hydrogen peroxide solution was applied to diesel contaminated soils in box, and subsequently contaminated groundwater was purified by the air-sparging method. With 23 L of 20% hydrogen peroxide solution and 2,160 L of air-sparging, TPH concentration of soil decreased from 9,551 mg/kg to 390 mg/kg and TPH concentration of groundwater reduced to lower than 5 mg/L. Results suggested that the combination process of the in-situ hydrogen peroxide flushing and the air-sparging has a great possibility to simultaneously remediate fuel contaminated soil and groundwater.

Domestic marine diesel engine makers reduce the NOx emission mostly by applying low NOx fuel nozzle and injection timing retard. However, it is necessary to develop high efficient technology (EGR, DWI and SCR, etc.) to reduce NOx emission in order to prepare for the further reinforcement of the NOx emission limit. Also, in the near future, IMO will restrict additively THC, PM and CO with NOx. Therefore, domestic engine makers have to prepare for it and the relevant government ministries should give a sufficient support to these technology research and establish or amend the relevant law, which should include the excursion riverboat.
An ammonia fuel system is developed and applied to a 1 liter gasoline engine to use ammonia as primary fuel. Ammonia is injected separately into the intake manifold in liquid phase while gasoline is also injected as secondary fuel. As ammonia burns 1/6 time slower than gasoline, the spark ignition is needed to be advanced to have better combustion phasing. The test engine showed quite high variation in the power output to lead high increase in THC emission with large amount of ammonia, that is, higher than 0.7 ammonia-gasoline fuel ratios.

The fuel injection pipe of a common rail system used in a clean diesel vehicle plays a role in supplying fuel from a rail to the injector of each cylinder connecting the engine under a repeated internal pressure. The fuel injection pressure is increased to over 200 MPa for satisfying EU emission standards and improving fuel efficiency, and a heading process and an autofrettage process are required for preventing folding defects and improving fatigue life. In this study, the flow stress and SN data of the material of the pipe are obtained through a tensile test and a fatigue test. The heading process for checking the folding defects of pipe ends is performed by using FEA. Furthermore, the optimal design of the autofrettage process for improving fatigue life considering not only the compressive residual stresses of the inner surface but also the tensile residual stresses of the outer surfaces of the pipe under the repeated internal pressure is performed by using FEA. To verify the process design, fatigue analysis for the autofrettaged pipe is performed.
Ethanol as fuel of Spark Ignition Direct Injection (SIDI) engine has become a feasible alternative due to its better anti-knock characteristics and lower nano-particle emission level. There are a number of studies on the emission characteristics from SIDI engine fuelled with various ethanol contents. In general, increase of ethanol contents leaded to decrease of nano-particle discharge, but the other researches showed reversed result at a singular range of ethanol contents. This study focused on the engine combustion performance and nano-particle emission characteristics of SIDI engine fuelled with intermediate ethanol contents.

The proportion of diesel vehicle is very high in this country . PM and NOx emitted from diesel-posered vehicle is severely ;affecting to be air quality . Especially, diesel particulate matters(DPM) including black smoke are hazardous air pollutants to human health and environment. In order to reduce the exhaust emissions from diesel engines, it is necessary to analyze the characteristics of exhaust emissions from diesel engines in various driving conditions. Recently, there are occasion to increase the fuel consumption rate to engine power up. So, in this study we have tested a diesel engine detached from in use -diesel vehicle and analyzed exhaust emission by driving condition and fuel dispersion rate. From this results, we will prepare the comprehensive management plan for exhaust emissions from diesel vehicles and contribute to the improvement of air pollution in urban area.
