The vaporization characteristics and spray combustion processes in the high-pressure environment are numerically investigated. This study employ the high-pressure vaporization model together with the state-of-art spray submodels. The present high-pressure vaporization model can account for transient liquid heating, circulation effect inside the droplet forced convection, Stefan flow effect, real gas effect and ambient gas solubility in the liquid droplets. Computations are carried out for the evaporating sprays, the evaporating and burning sprays, and the spray combustion processes of the turbocharged diesel engine. Numerical results indicate that the high-pressure effects are quite crucial for simulating the spray combustion processes including vaporization, spray dynamics, combustion, and pollutant formation.
An experimental investigation has been conducted to study the spray and combustion characteristics using the air-assisted twin fluid atomizer. Axial mean and fluctuating velocity components as well as drop-size distributions in non-reaction spray were measured with a nonintrusive phase doppler technique. Droplet number density distributions were also visualized using high speed CCD camera. Locations of spray and flame boundaries are obtained by direct photographic method. It is confirmed that at the fixed fuel flow rate, the increase of the atomizing air flow causes improvements on both spray and combustion characteristics under stable flame conditions. Internal group combustion modes where flame is located inside the spray boundary are observed to exist in the upstream region of higher droplet number density.
In the present study, to determine the flow rate of droplets supplied to heat transfer surface after (j-1)th rebound, $D_X[j{\ge}2]^{\ast}$, it was assumed that the rebound droplets are distributed according to the Gaussian distribution from 0 to L, in which the flight distance L is determined by maximum flight distance $L_{max}$. We also assumed that $L_{max}$ is dependent on the air flow velocity and mean size of droplets. The local heat flux of a dilute spray in high temperature region was predicted using the newly evaluated $D_X[j{\ge}2]^{\ast}$. In addition, the predicted results by the present model were compared with the existing experimental data.
The atomization characteristics of air-assist atomizer which is surrounded by a coflowing airstream is investigated. The air-assist, coflow air stream had swirl imparted to them in the same direction with 45 degree's angle swillers. The fuel and air entered the combustor at ambient temperature and the combustor was operated in an unconfined environment. Diesel fuel was used for all the experiments. Drop size and mean velocity are reported for certain distances downstream from the nozzle. The droplet size and velocity measurements were performed using a two-component phase/Doppler particle analyzer and velocity profiles across the entire flowfield are presented.
An experimental study was performed to investigate the liquid breakup and atomization characteristics in electrohydrodynamic atomization according to the changing of experimental parameters such as nozzle size, fluid flow, and electrical intensity. An original electrohydrodynamic atomizer equipment was designed and manufactured for the analysis of spray visualization and the exploration of relationship between applied power and the behavior of liquid atomization. The image processing technique by using the back-illumination method was applied to visualize the distilled liquid breakup process and to examine the variation of the droplet size distribution. The results show that the spray modes of electrohydrodynamic atomization are closelyconnected by the strength of the electric stresses at the surface of the liquid film and the kinetic energy of the liquid jet leaving the needle tip.
In this study, the velocity characteristics of liquid elements formed by two impinging jets is analysed using double pulse image capturing technique. For the droplets formed by low speed impinging jets, the droplet velocities are higher with smaller azimuthal and impingement angle. The maximum droplet velocities are about 25 % lower than jet velocity. With an increase of azimuthal angle, the shedding angles increases but remains lower than azimuthal angle. The velocities of ligaments formed by high speed impinging jets gradually decreases with an increase of azimuthal angle. The maximum ligament velocities are about 40% lower than jet velocity. Higher impingement angles produce lower ligament velocities. The shedding angles of ligament almost increases with the same value of azimuthal angle, which implies that the moving direction of ligaments is radial from the origin as the impingement point.
Recently, many researches have been performed to improve the combustion and emission in a D.I.Diesel engine. Especially reduction of the soot formation in the combustion chamber is the essential to acquire the improvement of the emission performance. This emission of the diesel combustion is effected by the characteristics of air-fuel mixing. Therefore, the optical measurement technique such as LII and LIS were established in order to visualize the distribution of the soot and analyze the particle including spray in the combustion chamber. In this study, we developed the algorithm for calculating relative diameter and density of particle and applied this method to measure stimultaneously the distribution of soot and spray in a D.I. diesel engine. From this experiment we found that the soot is existed in the rich region of spray and generated caused by incapable air fuel mixture.
Observations on the near-nozzle behavior of an unsteady fuel spray through single cylindrical hole nozzle were made by phase Doopler anemometer and microphotographs. At the edge of the spray, droplet velocity peaked during needle opening and closing. Droplet sizes tended to be small on the edge of spray. The near-nozzle spray angle taken from the microphotographs was time-dependent, even though it increased with gas-to-liquid density ratio as expected. The near-nozzle spray angle was the greatest on the initial stage and decreased to a relatively constant value after about one third of the total injection duration regardless of the ambient gas conditions, even in the near-vaccum condition. The wider near-nozzle spray angle in the early stage is due to the flow characteristics inside the nozzle rather than aerodynamic interactions. However, once the spray was established, aerodynamic interactions are essential in the near-nozzle atomization.
The Holographic Particle Velocimetry system can be a promising optical tool for the measurements of three dimensional particle velocities. In this study, diffused illumination holographic system to measure the sizes and 3D velocities of moving particles based on automatic image processing was developed. First of all basic optical systems for pulse laser recording, continuous laser reconstruction, and image acquisition, were constructed. To determine the position of particles in the optical axis, new three auto-focusing parameters(AEP), namely, Correlation Coefficient, Sharpness Index, and Depth Intensity were introduced and verified. The developed system was applied to spray droplets to validate the capability of the system. Three dimensional positions of particles viewed from two sides were decided using AFP and then 3D velocities of Particles were extracted by particle tracking algorithm. Comparison of measurement results of sizes and 3D velocities of particles with those obtained by laser instrument, PDPA, showed good consistency of the developed holographic system.
An experimental and numerical study of a spray flow is performed to investigate the spray characteristics using an air-assisted atomizer. A Partical Dynamic Analyzer(PDA) is used to measure SMD, dmp velocity, and drop number density whose the initial conditions have considerable effect on the numerical results. The measured experimental data have been used to asses the accuracy of model predictions. Numerical investigation is made with the Eulerian - Lagrangian formulism. Turbulent dispersion effects using a Monte-Carlo method, turbulent modulation effect and entrainment of air are also numerically simulated. Results show that the numerical predictions of SSF(Stochastic Separated Flow) analysis yielded reasonable agreement with the experimental data. However, the model calculations for small drops produced the inconsistent numerical results due to the effect of surrounding air entrainment.
