  • In this essay, I modify and improve an anger-solving approach based on Seneca's theory of anger. Seneca proposed his own theory on anger and its therapy in his book, De Ira. Jin-Nam Yi developed five-step-anger-solving approach based on Seneca's theory and John Dewey's problem-solving steps. I show that Yi's approach is restricted in preventive short-term therapy with a constricted concept of anger. I also propose that we should treat controllable anger on preventive levels and uncontrollable anger on therapeutic levels. Adding the sixth step, 'jumping' in order to treat counselees with uncontrollable angers, I suggest a new anger-solving approach with clinical examples.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the relations between infant's mothers parenting stress, anger and anger expression patterns: The data for this study was collected from 205 among the 3 to 6 years old infant's mothers who attend to the three kindergartens and seven children's house. The instruments used for this study were a self-report questionnaire, PSI(Parenting Stress Index Short Form by Abidin), Anger and Anger-expression patterns. Regression analysis was the statistical method used for data analysis. Results: There were significant positive correlations in the infant's mothers parenting stress, state-trait anger and anger out/in. The results of multiple regression analysis indicated that infant's mothers parenting stress, state and trait anger were significant variables predicting mother's anger expression patterns. Conclusion: This study suggests that the parental education program are necessary which a infant's mother can express positively about anger and decrease parenting stress.

  • Recent studies have investigated anger or anger-related problems in adolescents from various perspectives. However, understanding of anger expression types or the role of mediating variables in relation to anger and anger expressions have been disregarded. The purpose of this research was to understand the relationships between adolescents' anger, problem solving ability, and three types of anger expressions (anger-in, anger-out, anger-control) and to focus on the mediator function of problem-solving ability. Participants comprised 596 adolescents (283 males and 313 females). Anger was significantly related to all three types of anger expressions. Adolescents who showed high anger levels tended to indicate high anger-in and anger-out expressions but low anger-control expression, while controlling for age and gender. The findings also provided evidence for the mediator role of problem-solving ability on the relationship between anger and anger-control expression. From the results of this study suggestions and limitations were also discussed.

  • The purpose of the present study is to examine effects of anger expression and perceived emotional competence on school anger in adolescents. The participants were 304 high school students (134 males, 170 females). They were administered the anger-related subscales (anger-out, anger-in, and anger control) of the Korean Version of the State-Trait Anger Expression Inventory (STAXI-K), the Korean Version of Trait Meta-Mood Scale (K-TMMS), and the Korean Version of School Anger Inventory(SAI-K). The results showed that school anger positively correlated with anger-out and anger-in, and negatively correlated with anger control and perceived emotional competence. Neither interaction effects of anger-out and perceived emotional competence nor interaction effects of anger-in and perceived emotional competence on school anger were significant. On the contrary, interaction effects of anger control and perceived emotional competence on school anger were significant. The results of post-hoc analysis revealed that the effect of anger control on school anger was significant in the case of high perceived emotional competence but not significant in the case of low perceived emotional competence. Based on these results, it was suggested that psychological programs designed to reduce school anger in adolescents need effective measures to enhance not only anger control skills but also perceived emotional competence.

  • The purpose of this study was to confirm the characteristics of released prisoners through demographic and sociological variables and to investigate the effects of childhood traumatic experiences on family functioning and the mediating effects of anger expression method. For this purpose, Korea Rehabilitation Agency were selected and finally 400 released prisoners were analyzed. As a result, it appeared that anger expression method played a role of mediating variable when childhood trauma experience affects family functioning. Childhood trauma experience not only directly affects family functioning, but indirectly affects family functioning through anger expression method and the anger expression method played a role as partial mediating variable. Based on the results of this study, we emphasized the need for intervention and education for anger expression method in psychological counseling interventions to improve family functioning as a way to suppress the second offense of released prisoners with childhood abuse experience.

  • Trait anger is one of the psychological traits associated with experiences of anger. Individuals with high trait anger become angry easily at trivial events, and experience anger more frequently, intensely, and over a longer duration. This study aimed to investigate neural responses during experiences of anger, and identify the neural correlates of trait anger. Thirty five adults participated in the functional magnetic resonance (fMRI) experiment. They were scanned while they recalled an anger-inducing memory that was supposed to evoke an experience of anger. During the angry recall compared to the emotionally neutral recall, our participants showed greater neural activation in the right superior temporal gyrus (BA38), left inferior frontal gyrus (BA45), right thalamus, right insula (BA13), bilateral cuneus (BA17), and right cerebellum anterior lobe. The correlation analysis revealed that trait anger scores were positively associated with right insula activity during the angry recall. Individuals with higher trait anger were more likely to show greater activity in the right insula in response to past experiences of anger, as previously implicated in various studies of emotional processing. This finding suggests that trait anger may be an important factor in modulating anger-related brain activity.

  • This study aims to develop a reliable and valid Geriatric Reaction Inventory-Simplified Form (GRI-SF). Reaction inventory for measuring anger (Evans & Stangelang, 1971) is an assessment tool in a view of stimuli for measuring the level of anger invoked from the anger-triggered experiences. Yet, the inventory, comprised of 76 items, is sometimes incapable of finishing up the lengthy questionnaire. In the sense, a simplified form of RI is necessary for those lacks cognitive ability such as stroke patients or the elderly. In study 1, a full version of Reaction Inventory was given for the elder who are above 60, and ten items out of 76 was selected to form GRI-SF based on the psychometric theory. In study 2, the reliability and validity of GRI-SF was tested by another sample group of elderly with some additional examinations. The reliability was good with Cronbach's alpha of 0.79. Based on the fact that GRI-SF measures the personal trait anger, GRI-SF should not be only strong correlation with the scores of trait anger strongly, but be less correlated with scores representing other aspects of anger. As a result, GRI-SF score showed strong correlations with trait anger among other sub-categories of State-Trait Expression Inventory (STAXI), and was less correlated with anger-out score which reflects behavioral aspect of anger. Moreover, it is less correlated (r=.41) with hostility representing attitudinal or cognitive aspects of anger. Consequently, GRI-SF, constructed by this research, is verified to be a reliable and valid tool for anger measurement.

  • Objects : We performed this study to investigate anger, anger coping, stress response, grade differences and gender differences in delinquent adolescents who were released with warning by police. Methods The subjects consisted of 285 delinquent adolescents who participated in the intervention program for preventing delinquency and 391 school students (male : 377, female : 299/middle school : 346, high school 330) in Seoul. STAXI-K and IES were used. Results : 1) The delinquent adolescent group had the higher scores of 'state anger', 'trait anger', 'total anger' than the student group. But the delinquent adolescent group had the lower scores of 'anger in', 'anger control' and 'stress response' than the student group. 2) The male delinquent adolescent group had the higher scores of 'anger control', 'stress response' than the female delinquent adolescent group. But there was no significant difference in anger. 3) The high school delinquent adolescent group had the higher scores of 'trait anger', 'anger control' than the middle school delinquent adolescent group. The high school adolescent group had the higher scores of 'stress response' than the middle school adolescent group. Conclusion : In anger, anger coping and stress response, the normal student group were different form the adolescent group who were released with warning by police committed. According to the grade and gender, differences were reported in this study. These characteristics can be more easily and more effectively applied to programs for the adolescent group who were released with warning by police committed.
