  • This article aims to investigate the geographical distribution and the cultural, historical, and symbolic meanings of the place names in the area of Bukhansanseong (Fortress), and to basically suggest the several features which have happened throughout the process of toponymic changes. In order to realize the purpose of the article, I collected the chronological toponymic data, particularly focusing on the Bukhanji (Record of Bukhansanseong, 1745) in which the most existing place names related to Bukhansanseong are recorded. In the meantime, I proposed the character of distributions and types of the physical, human place names according to the rear-part of toponymic morpheme, i.e. the generic name. Moreover, selecting the main place names such as 'Bukhansan', etc., I analyzed some features on the toponymic meanings and changes in accordance with the fore-part of toponymic morpheme, the specific name. Consequently, I identified the facts that the name of 'Bukhansan' in the era of the Three Kingdoms, 'Samgaksan' in the Goryeo Dynasty, and again 'Bukhansan' or 'Buksan' in the Joseon Dynasty era had been primarily called. And then the place name, 'Bukhansan' has been officially named until now since constructing the Bukhansanseong Fortress in 1711. Meanwhile, the physical place names related to mountainous and fluvial topography, the place names of artificial facilities such as a mountain fortress on this geographical environment, and especially Buddhistic place names which was named and identified by Buddhist monk, Seongneung who wrote the Bukhanji, representing the Buddhistic identity and ideology, form a large majority of the place names within Bukhansanseong.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the significance of Buddhist stone art in the cultural zone of Mt. Bukhan. Mt. Bukhan witnessed the prevalence of Buddhist culture in and around it since the introduction of Korean Buddhism and served as the center of Buddhist culture in the nation, where new Buddhist temples continued to be built from the Three Kingdoms Period to the Joseon Period. Of the characteristics of its Buddhist culture, it is very noteworthy that the construction of military temples in and around it in the latter half of Joseon supported the function of Buddhist temples as basic places of worship. These military temples were closely related to the mountain's geopolitical location, traffic routes, and position in the national defense system-- its mountain fortress was an important defense facility. The stone art works of Mt. Bukhan can be categorized into various types, including stone stupas, stone pagodas, rock-carved Buddhas, stone Buddhas, towers and monuments (stone monuments), stone lanterns, flagpole supports, and rock-carved sarira pagodas. There are diverse types of stone art left on the mountain. As for its period characteristics, it is clear that the Buddhist art of Silla spread even to the Gyeonggi region, and that most of the works of stone art were created during the first half of Goryeo and the latter half of Joseon. Starting in Goryeo, the Buddhist temples of the mountain maintained close relations with the royal court by operating as the royal buddhist shrine for the royal family. In the latter part of Joseon, the construction of the Bukhan mountain fortress became the most important opportunity to produce stone art. As for the distribution of the stone artwork, it was usually created in the west part of the mountain from Unified Silla to the first half of Goryeo and in the southern and eastern parts of the mountain from the latter half of Goryeo to the latter half of Joseon. It is estimated that central Buddhist temples of the mountain changed due to Silla's military goal of advancing toward the west coast along the Han River in its early days and the construction of the Bukhan mountain fortress in the latter half of Joseon to protect the capital city. Finally, the stone art of Mt. Bukhan holds very high significance in art history because various types of stone art continued to be created on and around the mountain, the stone artwork of the mountain reflected representative styles for each period, and e rare and ofthe works produced on the mountain exemplified rare and unique styles.

  • To investigate the vegetation structure of the region from Bukhansanseong to Insubong in Bukhansan National park, 16 plost$(2500m^2)$ set up with random sampling method were surveyed. Three groups Quercus mongolica-Mixed Broad leaved community, Pinus densiflora-Quercus mongolica community, Quercus mongolica community was classified (or communities were classified) by cluster analysis. Quercus mongolica were found as a major woody plant species in Bukhansan National park region. High positive correlation were proved between Quercus mongolica and Rhododendron; Quercus mongolica and Rhus tricocarpa; Rhododendron mucronulatum and Rhododendron schlippenbachi; Symplocos chinensis and Rhododendron schlippenbachii; Acer pseudosieboldianum and Magnolia sieboldii, and relatively high negative correlation was proved between Fraxinus rhynchophylla and Rhododendron mucronulatum; Juniperus rigid a and Acer pseudosieboldianum; Styrax obassia and Acer pseudosieboldianum. Species diversity(H') of investigated groups were ranged from $1.236\sim1.319$ and it was relatively high compared to those of the ridge area of other national parks.

  • This study was carried out to define the geochemical and mineralogical relationship between stream sediments and regional geology on upstream of Hahn river area. Geochemical characteristic including for major elements, trace elements and rare earth elements of the South and North Hahn river bed sediments are similar to those of acid igneous rocks which are distributed around both Hahn river basin. The chemical variation of major elements against SiO$_2$ and trace elements contents between South and North Hahn river bed sediments doesn't show the difference. REE patterns of both area show a distinct negative Eu anomaly, but total contents of rare earth elements are higher in North Hahn river sediments than South Hahn river sediments. The heavy minerals in the river bed sediments in this study area are identified as tremolite-actinolite, hematiteㆍmagnetite, common hornblende, ilmenite, garnet, epidote, rutile and sphene. In conclusion, it is elucidated that South and North Hahn river bed sediments are being originated from igneous rocks or metamorphic rocks which contains medium-high grade metamorphic minerals and components of originated from sedimentary rocks those of politic or calcareous rocks are eroded away as solution or suspended load.

  • From 1949 to the present day, many Koguryo sites have been excavated, in North Korea. It can also be said that archaeological surveys and studies in North Korea have triggered Koguryo archaeological studies in South Korea. However, since the 1990s, the excavation of Koguryo sites and archaeological research in North Korea has been carried out as an extension of Daedonggang culture. Therefore, these archaeological surveys focused on the Pyongyang and more general northwestern areas of North Korea, and the conclusion was that Koguryo was a powerful nation with a millennium-long history inherited Gojoseon. Beginning in 1945 in North Korea, the archaeological surveys and related systems were organized, and burial mounds, castles, and city remains were excavated under the idea that Koguryo was a millennium-long, strong nation. In addition, archaeological research has been conducted to validate and confirm this belief. On the notion that Koguryo was founded in 277 BCE, it was insisted that the age of the tombs in Pyongyang was increased and Pyongyang took the position as a Vice Capital in the 4th Century. Recently an excavation of the castle located in Pyongyang supports the idea that Koguryo inherited Gojoseon on a layered basis. However, the archaeological and conceptual grounds for the founding of Koguryo in the 3rd Century BCE or the succession of Gojoseon and Koguryo were insufficient. As can be seen from the reconstruction of the royal tombs of the Dongmyung and Dangun, the archaeological surveys in North Korea were criticized for their selective discoveries and arbitrary interpretations. This further supports the necessity for joint excavations and academic exchanges between South and North Korea.

  • The wetland in the city could be mainly divided into the deep water type and the abandoned paddy type, so this study was conducted to analyze characteristics between the two types of the wetland. The former sample site was located near the Olympic village in Songpa-gu of Seoul, and the latter sample site was in front of the Mt. Bukhan fortress in Eunpyeong-gu of Seoul. The actual vegetation, vascular plants, and avian fauna were researched. In the actual vegetation, the deep water type had the broad surface of water and the emerged plant as Phragmites communis have grown widely, but the abandoned paddy type had the narrow sur-face of water and hydrophyte as Persicaria thunbergii have grown widely. It might be judged because the water depth of the abandoned paddy type were shallow wholly. And the floating-leaved plants and the free-floating planktonic plants were not observed such as Nymphaea tetragona var. angusta, Lemna paucicostata in the abandoned paddy type wetland. The wild birds were mainly observed at the edge of the wetland(at the edge of woodland) in the abandoned paddy type, but were observed equally in the deep water type. 28 families 433 species were observed at the former site and 32 families 365 species were observed at latter site. It was judged that the various topographical structure(habitat diversity) might make all items various.

  • This study aims to provide basic data for management and prevention of infection damage by Oak wilt disease through mapping method of status with infected level in damaged area of Bukhansan National Park. Survey was carried out in the distributed area of oak trees with mapping unit of polygon of actual vegetation and mapped of infection ratio and infection index applying weight according to infected level. Infection ratio of oak trees in Bukhansan National Park was 58.5%, and lightly damaged ratio was 29.6%, half of the damaged ratio was 16.1%, seriously damaged ratio was 8.8% and withered ratio was 4.1%. It was serious to be infected from Beomgol ridge in Wondobong district to Hyeongjaebong in Jeongrung district. Although the infected ratio of the western part of Songchu district, Sanseong district and Gugi district centering main ridge of Bukhansan National Park was low, it of ridge and main valley was high. Infection index of hardly damaged area was 39.1% of whole area, and slightly damaged area was 41.0%, half of the damaged area was 16.1%, seriously damaged area was 3.3% and alarmed withering area was 0.4%. Infection index was high around Musugol valley in Dobong district and Jaunbong, and it of Bohyunbong of Jeongrung district and the part of Hyojari valley of Sanseong district was serious. Predicted numbers of the trees affected Oak wilt disease compared to the distributed area of oak trees was 1,585,937 trees among 2,709,147 trees of Quercus spp. 352,931 trees among the 306,161 trees of oak were infected in Woi district, the most seriously infected area and 53,141 trees among the 145,747 trees of oak was infected in Gugi district, the most slightly infected area.
