Preparation of Azidated Polybutadiene(Az-PBD)/Ethylene-Vinyl Acetate Copolymer(EVA) Blends for the Application of Energetic Thermoplastic Elastomer (에너지함유 열가소성탄성체 적용을 위한 아지드화 폴리부타디엔/에틸렌-비닐아세테이트 공중합체 블렌드 제조)

  • A new energetic thermoplastic elastomer based on the azidated polybutadiene(Az-PBD)/ethylene vinyl acetate copolymer (EVA) blends was prepared, and structure and properties of the blends were invetigated by SEM, DSC, DMA, tensile testing and combustion test. The Az-PBD was synthesized via a two-step process involving the addition reaction of commercially available 1,2-PBD with $Br_2$ and subsequent nucleophilic substitution reaction of the brominated PBD with $NaN_3$. EVA/Az-PBD with 90/10, 80/20, 70/30 (wt/wt) was prepared by a solution blending. SEM, DSC, and DMA results revealed that the blends are partially compatible and Az-PBD is dispersed in continuous EVA matrix. Tensile test showed that modulus and tension set increased while elongation-at-break of the blends decreased with increasing Az-PBD content in the blends, but all the blends showed a elongation at break as high as 700% and a tension set of less than 5%, indicating that the blends are typically elastomeric. Combustion test showed that, with increasing Az-PBD content in the blend, higher energy can be released.

  • Zinc plated steel tire cords were treated with RF plasma polymerization coating of acetylene or butadiene in order to enhance adhesion to rubber compounds. Plasma polymerization was carried out as a function of plasma power, treatment tune and gas pressure. In order to maximize adhesion, argon plasma etching was performed, with carrier gas such as argon, nitrogen and oxygen, while the adhesion of tire cords was evaluated via TCAT. Best results were obtained from a combination treatment of argon etching (90 W. 10 min, 30 mTorr) and acetylene plasma polymerization coating (10 W, 30 sec, 30 mTorr) with argon carrier gas (25/5:acetylene/argon). These samples exhibited a pull out force of 285N which is comparable to that obtained from the brass plated tire cords (290N).

  • Starch was grafted by poly(methyl methacrylate) through the emulsion polymerization method. Modified starch/(acrylonitrile-butadiene rubber) (NBR) compounds were prepared by a latex blend method. The morphology, thermal properties and mechanical properties of the modified starch/carbon black/NBR composites were investigated with the change of starch concentration. The mechanical properties of the composites were improved by the addition of modified starch. But, when the concentration of modified starch was higher than 40 phr, the mechanical properties were deteriorated due to the poor dispersion of modified starch. At the same ratio of starch to carbon black, the composite showed a synergistic reinforcing effect by the good dispersion and high cross-linking density. In addition, the tensile strength, storage modulus, hardness, swelling and other properties were the best.

  • Acoustic Characteristics of Nitrile Butadiene Rubber with Carbon Black ContentAcoustic and mechanical properties of Nitrile Butadiene Rubbers (NBR) with the variation of the carbon black content were investigated. NBR where the acrylonitrile content is $33\%$ based on the mole percent has been prepared with fixed sulfur content for vulcanization. Acoustic measurement of the prepared rubbers were peformed in the frequency region of $300\;\~\;1000\;kHz$. Their mechanical properties such as density, hardness were also measured. Increase of the carbon black content in the rubber resulted in enhancement of the mechanical property and linear increase of the sound speed as function of the carbon black content. Interestingly, attenuation of the sound speed was only affected by the existence of the carbon black and not by the amount of carbon black in the experiment range of this article. In this study, it was found that the amount of carbon black content in the NBR was correlated with the acoustic properties and can be estimated nondestructively by the measurement of the specific acoustic property.

  • 이 논문(論文)의 목적(目的)은 열적안정성(熱的安定性) 및 내노화성면(耐老化性面)에 있어서 디엔제3성분단위체(第三成分單位體)(diene termonomer)의 각각(各各)의 종류(種類)가 EPDM의 중합체(重合體)의 성질(性質)에 미치는 효과(效果)를 구명(究明)하는데 있다. 제3성분단위체(第三成分單位體) 5종(種)으로 각각(各各) 다음과 같다. 즉, ethylidene norbonene(ENB), butadiene(BD), dicyclopentadiene(DCPD), methyltetrahydroindene (MTHI) 및 1,4-hexadiene(HD)이다. 이들을 써서 만든 각각(各各)의 EPDM은 동(同)몰의 불포화도(不飽和度)로 만들어졌다. 또한 가황계(加黃系)는 동일(同一)한 황/촉진제계(黃/促進劑系)를 사용(使用)하였다. ENB-EPDM이 순(純)고무배합체(配合體) 및 충전제함유배합체(充塡劑含有配合體)의 가황(加黃)에 있어서 모두 함께 가장 빠른 가황속도(加黃速度)를 보였다. HD-EPDM은 순(純)고무배합체(配合體)에서 가황속도(加黃速度)가 가장느렸으나 충전제함유배합물(充塡劑含有配合物)에서는 DCPD-EPDM보다는 발랐다. BD-EPDM을 제외(除外)한 이들 중합체(重合禮)는 거의 같은 초기가교밀도(初期架橋密度)를 갖는다. 가교밀도(架橋密度) 및 가교형(架橋型)을 분석(分析)하여 보면 BD-EPDM 쇄(鎖)에서 부타디엔 단위(單位)는 블럭을 이루고 있다. 또한 HD-EPDM은 순(純)고무가황체(加黃體) 및 충전제배합가황체(充塡劑配合加黃體)에 있어서 원가교결합(原架橋結合)의 50%가 monosulfide의 구조(構造)를 가지고있다. 이외(外)의 4종(四種)의 EPDM 폴리머는 보다 낮은 monosulfide구조를 가진다. $177^{\circ}C(350^{\circ}F)$의 노화온도(老化溫度)에서 ENB 및 HD폴리머는 약(約) 65% monosulfide 가교(架橋) 및 거의 동일(同一)한 파괴에너지값$(E_b)$을 가진다. 그러나 1,4HD의 원가교(原架橋)의 monosulfide 구조함량(含量)이 보다 높다고 해서 그의 내노화성(耐老化性)이 다른 폴리머보다 더 좋다고는 생각되지 않는다. DCPD는 $177^{\circ}C(350^{\circ}F)$의 노화온도(老化溫度)에서 똑같은 monosulfide가교(架橋)를 가지나 노화온도(老化溫度)가 $259^{\circ}C(500^{\circ}F)$로 높아짐에 따라 monosulfide 함량(含量)도 증가(增加)한다. $550^{\circ}F(287.7^{\circ}C)$의 노화온도(老化溫度)에서는 EPDM폴리머의 모든 가교(架橋)가 monosulfide구조가 되나 전가교밀도(全架橋密度) 및 $E_b$ (신장률(伸長率), 절단시(切斷時)의)는 대단(大端)히 낮은 것으로 나타나는데 이것은 산화(酸化)에 의한 노화(劣化)에 기인(基因)되는 것으로 보인다. 질소기류(窒素氣流)속에서의 TGA의 분석결과(分析結果)를 보면 EPDM 가황체(加黃體)는 $800\sim935^{\circ}F(427\sim502^{\circ}C)$의 온도범위(溫度範圍)에서 분해(分解)되며 공기중(空氣中)에서는 $750\sim935^{\circ}F$ 범위(範圍)에서 분해(分解)한다.

  • Zinc plated steel tire cords were subjected to RF plasma etching of argon, followed by plasma polymerization coating of acetylene or butadiene in order to enhance adhesion to rubber compounds. Plasma polymerization was carried out under optimized conditions of 10 W, 30 sec, 30 mTorr for acetylene and butadiene gas, while plasma etching was performed at 90W, 10min and 30mTorr. The adhesion of tire cords was evaluated via Tire Cords Adhesion Test (TCAT) and the failure surfaces of the tested samples were analyzed by SEM. Polymer coating by plasma polymerization was also characterized by FT-IR, Alpha-Step and dynamic contact angle analyzer in order to elucidate the adhesion mechanism.

Recycling of Red Mud as Plastic Fillers (플라스틱 Filler로서의 적니의 재활용)

  • Recycling of red mud from the aluminium manufacturing process was investigated to be utilized as plastic fillers. High density polyethylene(HDPE), low density polyethylene(LDPE) and polypropylene(PP) were found to be the suitable plastic material for which red mud can be used as fillers. With the addition of red mud the plastic showed red brown color. As the ratio of amount of red mud to plastic increased, the tensile strength increased while the Izod impact strength decreased. About five percent of ethylene vinyl alcohol(EVA) was needed as an additive to prevent the lowering of impact strength. Maleic anhydride modified polypropylene was effective for reduction of impact strength lowering of PP. Mixed waste plastics containing LDPE, HDPE, PP, polystyrene and ABS could also accommodate red mud as fillers. In this case, significant loss in mechanical properties were observed due to immiscibility between the components. Ethylene propylene rubber(EPR) and styrene butadiene styrene block copolymer (SBS) could be used to improve the impact properties of the commingled waste plastics.

  • Recently, the disposal of used vehicle tires is a big social problem because the amount of used vehicle tires has been increased with development of' automobile industry. Many researches have been made on the recycling of used vehicle tires in the various fields of industry as well as construction industry. When the crumb rubber made of vehicle tires is mixed in cement concrete and mortar, it is indicated that the adhesive strength of interface between the crumb rubber and cement hydrates is very low. The purpose of this study is to improve the fundamental properties by increasing of the adhesion strength of styrene-butadiene rubber(SF3R) latex coated crumb rubber in ; cement mortar. SBR-modified mortar using crumb rubber is also tested as the same method. From the test results, the cement mortar using SBR latex coated crumb rubber have a good fundamental properties compared with that using uncoated crumb rubber. The mechanical properties of SBR-modified mortar using crumb rubber with polymer-cement ratios of 10% are also improved.

Evaluation of 1,1,2-trichloroethylene Removal Efficiency Using Composites of Nano-ZnO Photocatalyst and Various Organic Supports (다양한 유기계 지지체와 광촉매 Nano-ZnO 복합체를 활용한 1,1,2-trichloroethylene 제거 효율 평가)

  • In this study, the various organic supports (i.e., silicone, acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene, epoxy, and, butadiene rubber) with great sorption capacity of organic contaminants were chosen to develop nano-ZnO/organic composites (NZOCs) and to prevent the detachment of nano-ZnO particles. The water resistance of the developed NZOCs were evaluated, and the feasibility of the developed NZOCs were investigated by evaluating the removal efficiency of 1,1,2-trichloroethylene (TCE) in the aqueous phase. Based on the results from water-resistance experiments, long-term water treatment usage of all NZOCs was found to be feasible. According to the FE-SEM, EDX, and imaging analysis, nano-ZnO/butadiene rubber composite (NZBC) with various sizes and types of porosity and crack was measured to be coated with relatively homogeneously-distributed nano-ZnO particles whereas nano-ZnO/silicone composite (NZSC), nano-ZnO/ABS composite (NZAC), and nano-ZnO/epoxy composite (NZEC) with poorly-developed porosity and crack were measured to be coated with relatively heterogeneously-distributed nano-ZnO particles. The sorption capacity of NZBC was close to 60% relative to the initial concentration, and this result was mainly attributed to the amorphous structure of NZBC, hence the hydrophobic partitioning of TCE to the amorphous structure of NZBC intensively occurred. The removal efficiency of TCE in aqueous phase using NZBC was close to 99% relative to the initial concentration, and the removal efficiency of TCE was improved as the amount of NZBC increased. These results stemmed from the synergistic mechanisms with great sorption capability of butadiene rubber and superior photocatalytic activities of nano-ZnO. Finally, the removal efficiency of TCE in aqueous phase using NZBC was well represented by linear model ($R^2{\geq}0.936$), and the $K_{app}$ values of NZBC were from 2.64 to 3.85 times greater than those of $K_{photolysis}$, indicating that butadiene rubber was found to be the suitable organic supporting materials with enhanced sorption capacity and without inhibition of photocatalytic activities of nano-ZnO.

Optimum Design of Cross Section Lateral Damper Oil Seals for High Speed Railway Vehicle (고속 철도 차량 횡댐퍼 오일 씰의 형상 단면 최적설계)

  • The damper oil seal of a high-speed railway vehicle is made from nitrile butadiene rubber (NBR) in order to prevent lubricant from leaking into the damper and to stop harmful contaminants from entering the external environment while in service. Oil leakage through the seal primarily occurs from fatigue failure of the damper. Cumulative damage of the seal occurs due to the contact force between the rod and the rubber during movement due to track irregularities and cants, among other factors. Thus, the design of the oil seal should minimize the maximum principal strain at weak points. In this study, the optimal cross section of the damper oil seal was found using the multi-island genetic algorithm method to improve the durability of the damper. The optimal shape of the oil seal was derived using process automation and design optimization software. Nonlinear material properties for finite element analysis (FEA) of the rubber were determined by Marlow's model. The nonlinear FEA confirmed that the maximum principal strain at the oil leakage point was decreased 24% between the initial design and the optimum design.
