The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) has permitted the use of Lime Kiln Dust (LKD) as a low-cost construction material in creating a workable platform for soil modification (not for soil stabilization) since the early 1990s on selected projects. However, the enhanced strength of soils with LKD has not been accounted for in the subgrade stability calculations in the design process. This study was initiated to evaluate how the lime kiln dust is a comparable material to hydrated lime. A series of laboratory tests were performed to assess the mechanical benefits of lime kiln dust in combination with various predominant fine grained soils encountered in the State of Indiana, such as A-4, A-6 and A-7-6. In the course of this study, several tests such as the Atterberg limits, standard Proctor, unconfined compression, CBR, volume stability, and resilient modulus were performed. As a result, mixtures of fine grained soils with 5% lime or 5% LKD substantially improve unconfined compressive strength up to 60% - 400%. CBR values for treated soils are in the range of 25 to 70 while those for untreated soils range from 3 to 18. In general, significant increase in resilient moduli of the soils treated with lime and LKD was observed. This indicates that lime kiln dust may be a viable, cost effective alternative to hydrated lime in enhancing the strength of fine grained soils.

Our domestic economy has been developed very rapidly after 1960's. Also, it is dramatically increasing traffic on road and surround environmental issues. Especially, rapid economic growth has been induced large construction of pavement, and bigger and higher traffic for transportation. These are making air pollution, traffic noise and vibration. The social requirement against the revealed road environment and traffic sound reduction is being demanded. Traffic noise of city zone is showed over the environmental specification more than 57%. In order to overcome these situations, the social attention is being increased. The quiet pavement is the same format of permeable pavement, but is not same for functional performance. In this research, it has been carried out to evaluate the fundamental-mechanical properties of hot mix asphalt for quiet pavement. Especially, couple of laboratory tests are conducted like marshall stability, resilient modulus, indirect tensile test, and compaction energy analysis with gyratory compaction curve. Also, two-layer pavement system has been adopted for developing of quiet pavement. The basic performance of hot mix asphalt of quiet pavement show a satisfaction of specification of hot mix asphalt.

Semiconductor packages are increasingly moving toward miniaturization, lighter and multi-functions for mobile application, which requires highly integrated multi-stack package. To meet the industrial demand, the package and silicon chip become thinner, and ultra-thin packages will show serious reliability problems such as warpage, crack and other failures. These problems are mainly caused by the mismatch of various package materials and geometric dimensions. In this study we perform the numerical analysis of the warpage deformation and thermal stress of 4-layer stacked FBGA package after EMC molding and reflow process, respectively. After EMC molding and reflow process, the package exhibits the different warpage characteristics due to the temperature-dependent material properties. Key material properties which affect the warpage of package are investigated such as the elastic moduli and CTEs of EMC and PCB. It is found that CTE of EMC material is the dominant factor which controls the warpage. The results of RSM optimization of the material properties demonstrate that warpage can be reduced by $28{\mu}m$. As the silicon die becomes thinner, the maximum stress of each die is increased. In particular, the stress of the top die is substantially increased at the outer edge of the die. This stress concentration will lead to the failure of the package. Therefore, proper selection of package material and structural design are essential for the ultra-thin die packages.

The fabrication process for miniaturizing the Electronic Article Surveillance (EAS) sensor was studied using micromachining technique. Two types of sensor structure, free standing membrane type and diving beard type, were proposed and researched for establishing the fabrication process. The membrane type structure was easy to change the sensor shape but had the limitation for miniaturizing, because the size of the sensor depends on the silicon substrate thickness. The diving board type structure has the advantage of miniaturization and of free motion. Since the elastic modulus is not trio high, SiN film is expected to be adequate for the supporting membrane of magnetic sensor. The selectivity of $H_2O_2$for sputtered W with respect to Fe-B-Si, which was studded for magnetic sensor materials, was high enough to be removed after using as a protection layer. Therefore, the diving board type process using the silicon nitride film for the supporter of the sensor material and the sputtered W for protection layer is expected to be useful fur miniaturizing the Electronic Article Surveillance (EAS) sensor.

In this study the probability and the reliability-based seismic performance evaluation procedure proposed in the FEMA-355F was applied to a reinforced concrete moment frame building. For the FEMA procedure, which was originally developed for steel moment frame structures, to be applied to other structural systems, the capacity should be re-defined and the factors reflecting the uncertainties related to capacity and demand need to be determined. To perform the evaluation procedure a prototype building was designed per IBC 2003, and inelastic dynamic analyses were conducted applying site-specific ground motions to determine the parameters for performance evaluation. According to the analysis results, distribution of the determined capacities turned out to be relative]y smaller than that of the demands, which showed that the defined capacity was reasonable. It was also shown that the prototype building satisfied the target performance since the determined confidence levels exceeded the otjectives for both local and global collapses.

The object of this paper is to propose a logical prediction model of a concrete creep using rheology. Rheology is the study on the flow and stress relationship of matter under the influence of an applied stress. It is also estimated as an effective theory to describe concrete long-term deformations. According to a time dependency and a mechanism of occurrence, the proposed creep model was divided into four components, such as an elastic deformation, a long-term creep, a time dependent short-term creep and a time independent short-term creep. Evaluation on an actual creep deformation pattern by time passage confirmed these classification. In order to approve a rationality of the proposed model, most coefficients of each components were derived by the microprestresssolidification theory and design codes. Numerical approaches were also used when it was restricted within narrow limits. Finally, the proposed rheolgical model was verified by actual creep test results and compared with common methods.
Amorphous $Fe_{50}Zr_{50}$ alloy has been manufactured by mechanical alloying from pure elemental powders of Fe and Zr in conventional ball mill under an Ar atmosphere. Structure and magnetic properties of the amorphous phase were studied by transmission electron microscopy and SQUID magnetometry. Selected area diffraction patterns taken from the mechanically alloyed powders showed two halo rings, indicating coexistence of Fe rich and Zr rich amorphous phases in mechanically alloyed powder. Curie temperature of the Fe rich amorphous phase, measured by Arrot plot, was 195 K. Fe content in the ferromagnetic amorphous phase, estimated from the Curie temperature, was about 65 at%. Spin wave stiffness constant of $Fe_{50} Zr_{50}$ alloys processed for 100 and 200 hrs were 52.2 and 63.8 meV, respectively. The higher spin wave stiffness constant in 200 hrs milled powders may arise from the precipitation of $\alpha$-Fe by partial crystallization of amorphous phase.

Volume of concrete slab changes by variations of temperature and moisture after its placement. Shrinkage due to evaporation causes tensile stress in the slab when contraction of the slab is restrained by its self weight, friction with subbase, and etc. Actual tensile stress caused by the shrinkage was less than theoretically predicted stress according to previous studies. It was the stress reduction due to visco-elastic property of the early-age concrete slab partially restrained. In this study, strains of restrained circumferential, unrestrained circumferential, and unrestrained square pillar concrete specimens were measured to investigate stress reduction of the specimens with age of concrete. Elastic modulus of the concrete was measured at the age of 1, 3, 7, 14, 28 days and penetration test was performed. The stress reduction was calculated by input the test results into theoretical equations suggested by previous researchers. The stress reduction of the restrained concrete specimens will be applied to design of concrete pavements based on results of the study.

The tire inflation and contact problem has been solved by a finite element method. The finite element formulation is derived from the equilibrium equations by the principle of virtual work in the form of an updated Lagrangian formulation for incremental analysis. Then, a contact formulation is added to the finite element formulation to calculate stress state of tire in contact with flat rigid road under the load due to the self-weight of a vehicle. In the finite element analysis, equations of effective material properties are introduced to analyze a plane strain model of the shell-like tire by considering the bending effect of reinforced steel cords. The proposed equations of effective material properties produced stress concentration around the edge of belt layers, which does not appear when other well-known equations of material properties are adopted. The result from the above algorithm demonstrates the validity of the formulation and the proposed equations for the effective elastic constants. The result fully interprets the cause of separation between belt layers by showing the stress concentration.
