  • Potato phenology, growth, and yield are projected to be highly affected by global warming in the future. The objective of this study was to examine the responses of potato growth and yield to environmental elements like temperature, solar radiation, and daylength. Planting date experiments under open field condition were conducted using three cultivars differing in maturity group (Irish Cobbler and Superior as early; Atlantic as mid-late maturing) at eight different planting dates. In addition, elevated temperature experiment was conducted in four plastic houses controlled to target temperatures of ambient temperature (AT), $AT+1.5^{\circ}C$, $AT+3^{\circ}C$, and $AT+5^{\circ}C$ using cv. Superior. Tuber initiation onset was found to be hastened curve-linearly with increasing temperature, showing optimum temperature around $22-24^{\circ}C$, while delayed by longer photoperiod and lower solar radiation in Superior and Atlantic. In the planting date experiments where the average temperature is near optimal and solar radiation, rainfall, pest, and disease are not limiting factor for tuber yield, the most important determinant was growth duration, which is limited by the beginning of rainy season in summer and frost in the late fall. Yield tended to increase along with delayed tuber initiation. Within the optimum temperature range ($17^{\circ}-22^{\circ}C$), larger diurnal range of temperature increased the tuber yield. In an elevated temperature treatment of $AT+5.0^{\circ}C$, plants failed to form tubers as affected by high temperature, low irradiance, and long daylength. Tuber number at early growth stage was reduced by higher temperature, resulting in the decrease of assimilates allocated to tuber and the reduction of average tuber weight. Stem growth was enhanced by elevated temperature at the expense of tuber growth. Consequently, tuber yield decreased with elevated temperature above ambient and drop to almost nil at $AT+5.0^{\circ}C$.

  • To stabilize the lantern cage culture system of Patinopecten yessoensis(Jay) in the eastern coast of Korean peninsula, optimum conditions such as time of transplantation, rearing density and depth, and time of harvest were identified. During the period from January 1991 to December 1998, the water temperature ranged from 4.7 to 21.4$^{\circ}C$ at 15-30 m depth and 4.9 to 25.7$^{\circ}C$ at the surface; these thermal ranges were within the optimal ranges (5-23$^{\circ}C$) prevailing at 15-30 m depth at surface water. Annual thermal changes indicated that the prevailing temperature during the years 1993 and 1996 was near optimum, but higher during the years 1994, 1997 and 1998, when mass mortality and growth retardation occurred. Salinity (32.0- 34.4$\textperthousand$) and dissolved oxygen (4.14 -8.11 $\mu\textrm{g}$/l) at 15 m depth were well within the optimum ranges. The chlorophyll concentrations (0.06 - 2.73$\mu\textrm{g}$/l) indicated that the study area was oligotrophic, although mass mortality did occur, when chlorophyll concentrations were high, especially in summer. Hence water temperatures and chlorophyll concentration are major factors related to survival and growth of the scallop. In terms of the shell height maximum growth occurred during spring (March-May; 8 - l3$^{\circ}C$) and fall (October-December; 11-l7$^{\circ}C$) in the lantern cage culture. Slow growth was recorded during late winter January-february; less than 7$^{\circ}C$) and mid-summer (August- September; more than 18$^{\circ}C$). Daily growth of shell height and total weight were 0.02∼0.24 mm and -0.07∼0.90 g at the rearing density of 12 individuals per net. Optimal .earing density in the lantern cage (ø50${\times}$20 cm) was 10∼15 individuals with the shell height of 5∼6 cm. The fastest growth rates were observed at 15∼20 m depth; however, it is recommended that 20∼30 m would be optimal. The scallops require 22 months to attain the commercial size of 10 cm shell height and 140 g total weigh, and are best harvested and sold during March-April.

  • In order to analyze the life cycle of A. artemisiifolia var. elatior dormancy and some environmental factors inducing germination of the seeds were examined. The results were as follows : Dormancy of fertile seeds was broken in part within a month after seed collection in case of adequate moisture and alternating temperature was also effective in breaking dormancy. The temperature range, which allow germination was $12^{\circ}C{\sim}32^{\circ}C$. Optimum temperature for germination was $24^{\circ}C$. The seed of A. artemisiifolia var. elatior was light-independent. The difference of storage period appeared to have no particular effect on the viability of seeds at any time during the 9-month storage period. In the increasing temperature(IT) regime, A. artemisiifolia var. elatior seeds started to germinate at $16^{\circ}C$, showing the higher temperature the greater germination rate : the final germination percentage was 99.34%. On the other hand, in the decresing temperature(DT) regime, seeds began to germinate at $20^{\circ}C$ with the 1.34% germination. An induced dormancy occurred at $12^{\circ}C$ making the 5.34% final germination in the DT regime. Low temperature was more effective to break dormancy than higher temperature. Seeds of A. artemisiifolia var. elatior seems to be germinated in mid to late autumn or germination delayed until following spring. The above results suggest these variation of germination response in diverse environmental factors seems to be a physiological strategy to maintain their existence and to reproduce in the extreme thermal variation.

  • The animation cluster in Korea has begun as a part of the local cultural cluster in the late 1990s with components of companies, local governments, educational institutions, and human resources, which were necessary to run the cluster. And, the animation cluster was initiated for the purpose of encouraging regional economies, but the basic unit was the local on a small scale. Because of this inherent weakness in the local cluster, it was needed to add some additional strategies that could expand the local animation industry into the formal leading industry. That is why the development policy was set up, and the local promotion agency based on this policy was established. It has been several years to manage the local promotion agency, and it is reported that there have been some visible effects. But, it is found out that analyzing the outcome of small unit cluster on the basis of existing criteria on a large scale is not reliable, which means it is not possible to evaluate the outcome of local cluster in a material way. Some examples of problems are as follows. First, the local cluster was made not autonomously but deliberately. Second, the animation cluster of each province has the same market as its target. Therefore, this research - on the basis of the diamond model - focuses on analyzing the existence and role of local promotion agencies rather than evaluating the outcome itself. Through the cases of two provincial cities, Chuncheon and Bucheon, this research examines if it is possible to evaluate the outcome of local clusters managed by promotion agencies.

  • This study was initiated to evaluate green color retention under three different soil systems. Several turfgrasses were evaluated in multi-layer, USGA, and mono-layer systems. Turfgrass entries were comprised of three cultivars of Korean lawngrass (Zoysia japonica Steud.) as warm-season grass (WSG) and three blends and three mixtures of Kentucky bluegrass (KB, Poa pratensis L.), perennial ryegrass (PR, Lolium perenne L.), and tall fescue (TF, Festuca arundinacea Schreb.) as cool-season grass (CSG). Significant differences were observed in visual turf color and green color retention among soil systems and turfgrasses. Both the multi-layer and USGA systems were highly associated with better color ratings and longer color retention, as compared with the mono-layer system. Seasonal variation of visual turf color greatly occurred from late December to early spring. CSG exhibited longer color retention than did WSG. The latter maintained green color for approximately 6 months, regardless of the soil system. Spring green-up of Korean lawngrass occurred from early to middle May, while it underwent discoloration from late October to early November. Among the CSGs green-up occurred between early March and early April and leaf color was maintained until middle December to early February. Therefore, the CSGs were green for 8.5 to 11 months, depending on turfgrass and soil system. The mean period of green color duration across all soil systems was approximately 10-11, 9-10 and 8.5-9.0 months for PR, KB and TF, respectively. As for the CSG mixtures, the greater the proportion of PR, the longer the green color retention, while the higher the proportion of TF, the shorter the color retention. There was greater variation in green color duration among the CSGs than the WSGs. Across soil systems, color retention differences of 2 to 6 days were observed for the Korean lawngrass, but 7 to 36 days for the CSGs. These results demonstrate that green color retention varied greatly according to soil systems and also among turfgrasses. Selections of turfgrass and soil system should be made using a concept-oriented approach, when establishing garden, park, soccer field, golf course and other sports field. Information obtained in this study can be used to select soil systems and turfgrasses based on the expected degree of leaf color retention.

  • A mesocosm, an artificial tidal flat ecosystem, was constructed outdoors to simulate in situ physical and biochemical environmental conditions of natural tidal flat as much as possible. During the experiment from February to August 2004, the study was focused on the biogeochemical variations of superficial water and porewater after introduction of freshwater into the mesocosm. The mesocosm has three experimental conditions; SW-M-T: maintaining the saline water of approximately 20 psu; FW-M-T: complete exchange of freshwater ul the mesocosm with continuous mixing of water column: FW-NM-T: complete exchange of saline water to freshwater in the mesocosm without mixing of water column. Mass extinction of benthic macrofauna appeared due to drastic decrease of porewater salinity from 20 psu to less than 10 psu between the 63th and 91st day of freshwater introduction in FW-M-T and FW-NM-T. Throughout the periods, 7/8 of bivalves and 2/3 of polychaete populations have been extinguished in the sediment. In FW-NM-T, as temperature rises, both evident decrease of DO in water column and active release of DIP from sediment were observed. ${NO_3}^-$ was removed from water column into sediment throughout the periods. Therefore extremely low ${NO_3}^-$ was found during late spring and summer. Whereas ${NH_4}^+$ exhibited only $1/2{\sim}1/8$ of ${NO_3}^-$ concentration. Unexpectedly even after mass extinction of benthic macrofauna, we were not able to find high ${NH_4}^+$. This mesocosm study suggests that when fresh water introduce to natural tidal flat, its sediment activity functions as a potential source of DIP, but a sink of ${NO_3}^-$.

  • The fisheries resources of the set net fishery on four fishing grounds (Pyuong Dae, Gu Eum, Du Moah, Gang Jeong) in coastal waters of Jeju Island were studied to the determine catch-variation characteristics from January, 1998 to December, 1999. A total catch of 153,862 kg was made through the survey period. The large total was related mainly to the high catch of Trachurus japonicus, which comprised 58.2% of the total. Other dominant species which account for 23.0% of the total catch were Siganus fuscescens, Todarodes pacificus, Loligo chinesis, Seriola lalandi, Sepioteuthis lessoniana, and Seriola quinqueradiata. Catch density was high in Gu Eum (more than 100,000 kg), whereas those in Pyuong Dae, Du Moah, and Gang Jeong were less than 30,000 kg in total. The fishing period of the set net fishery was from April to December, which was also closely related to the variation of the sea water temperature in the fishing grounds. The ranges of water temperature in the four fishing grounds were $18{\sim}26^{\circ}C$ in Pyuong Dae, $16{\sim}26^{\circ}C$ in Du Moah, $15{\sim}26^{\circ}C$ in Gu Eum, and $15{\sim}26^{\circ}C$ in Gang Jeong.

  • In April 2014, Fusarium wilt was found on kohlrabi seedlings in Iksan, Korea. Symptoms included wilting of foliage, drying and withering of older leaves, and stunting of the plants. The infected plants eventually died during growth. Colonies on potato dextrose agar were pinkish white, and felted with cottony and aerial mycelium. Macroconidia were falcate to almost straight, thin walled and usually 3-septate. Microconidia were usually formed abundantly in false-heads on short monophialides on the hyphae and were hyaline, smooth, oval to ellipsoidal, aseptate or medianly 1-septate, very occasionally 2-septate, slightly constricted at the septa, $4-11{\times}2.5-5{\mu}m$. On the basis of the morphological characteristics and phylogenetic analyses of molecular markers (internal transcribed spacer rDNA and translation elongation factor $1{\alpha}$), the fungus was identified as Fusarium oxysporum. Pathogenicity of a representative isolate was proved by artificial inoculation, fulfilling Koch's postulates. To our knowledge, this is the first report on the occurrence of Fusarium oxysporum on kohlrabi in Korea.

  • We investigated the interactions between coastal waters of the Yeongil Bay, Korea, and oceanic waters of the Eastern Sea, as wet 1 as the development mechanism of vertical circulation currents in the bay. The oceanic waters of the bay have an average water temperature of $12.2{\sim}18.4^{\circ}C$ and salinity of $33.32{\sim}34.43$ PSU. Results of spectral analysis have shown that the period of revolution between oceanic and coastal waters is about 0.84-0.91 years in the surface waters and 1.84 years in the bottom layer. The wind direction in the bay shifts between SW and NE, with the main wind direction being SW during the winter period, and water mass movement is influenced by such seasonal variations in wind direction. Vertical circulation currents in the bay are structured by two phenomena: the surface riverine outflow layer from the Hyeong-san River into the open sea and the bottom oceanic inflow layer with high-temperature and salinity into the bay. These phenomena start the spring when the water mass is stable and become stronger in the summer when the surface cold water develops over a 10-day period. Consequently, tidal currents have little influence in the bay; rather, these vertical and horizontal circulation currents play an important role in the transport of the pollutant load from the inner bay to the open sea.
