  • A single plate connection(SPC) consists of a plate welded to the columns and bolts connected to the beam web. The SPC is widely used for a simple shear connection of steel structure because it is easy-to-fabricated, easy-to-installed and economical. The conventional SPC is used for 2 to 12 bolts in a single vertical row. It is designed to limit the plate thickness by bolt diameter to obtain flexible and ductile connections. The design strength for eccentric shear shall be the lesser of the shear strength of bolts or bearing strength of plate and when the design strength is decided by edge distance failure, the results can be very conservative. Although the research on special solution for 'weak-plate/strong-bolt' model with 2 to 4 bolts has been conducted by L. S. Muir, and W. A. Thonton, 2004, study on generalized design procedures did not conduct. This study proposed design procedure for evaluation of the design strength of eccentric shear bolt groups on a single plate connection based on the actual edge distance and the direction of bolt reaction forces by using elastic vector method(EVM) and instantaneous center of rotation method(ICM).

  • A three-dimensional finite analysis method was proposed to predict the failure of composite double-lap bolted joints, which is based on the stiffness degradation method using damage variables and Hashin's three-dimensional failure criteria. Ladeveze's theory using damage variables to consider the matrix/shear damage was combined with stiffness degradation in fiber direction. Four different failure modes were considered including matrix compression/shear, matrix tension/shear, fiber compression, and tension failures. The friction between bolt and composite and the clamping force were considered using a commercial finite element software ABAQUS. The damage model was incorporated using the user-defined subroutine of the software. The predicted result was verified with the existing test result for bearing tension double shear and showed the deviation ranging 7~16% from test results.

  • Rock Bolt generally utilizes deformed reinforcing bar welded from structural steel of which strength is higher than required for making advantageous use of the support function of ground. In the condition with highly corrosive underground water, however, problem frequently occurs on tunnel and slope stabilization in terms of repair, rehabilitation and maintenance issues due to the destruction of Rock Bolt by corrosion of steel. A structural performance evaluation for GFRP Rock Bolt was conducted for the purpose of resolving the foregoing problem and at the same time developing a permanently-usable support material. This study intended to evaluate the safety factor of GFRP Rock Bolt by implementing the slope stability interpretation via structural analysis on the basis of its structural characteristics derived from both tensile force function test and shear force function test. It is judged based on the results that GFRP Rock Bolt would secure sufficient ground stability as an alternative material for existing Steel Rock Bolt.

  • This research investigated the hygrothermal effect on the strength of bolt jointed section and moisture contents of composites exposed to hygrothermal environment for composite aircraft radome. The decrease in strength in the test environment is mainly attributed to the change in the material properties of the matrix due to temperature and moisture. The composite specimens were tested in three different environmental conditions: RTD(room temperature and dry), CTD(cold temperature and dry) and ETW(elevated temperature and wet). The failure mode of the bolt jointed composite specimens were studied using tests and finite element analysis. Finite element analysis reasonably predicted the failure load and mode of the joints. A reliability-based design was carried out for the bolt jointed composites of radome.

  • A T-stub connection with high-strength bolts under tensile force is affected by prying action force and the contact force, among others, between members. If a design equation that does not consider such prying action force and contact force between members is not proposed, the T-stub under tensile force is liable to be fractured under the strength lower than the estimated design strength. To prevent it, many studies have proposed contact force estimation equations between members as well as the prying action force of the T-stub connection with high-strength bolts. However, no design equations based on such research have been proposed in South Korea. Therefore, this study aims to propose an estimation model for more accurate prying action force and contact force, and improve on previously proposed estimation models by implementing the three-dimensional, nonlinear finite element analysis. Throughout the results of three-dimensional, nonlinear finite element analysis, the prediction model proposed in this research for the prying action force and contact force of a T-stub provided much more accurate estimation than that of a existing prediction model previously suggested.

  • In-situ rock mass demonstrates the variety of structural features, and especially the mechanical and spatial characteristics of joint (or joint system) greatly affect the deformation and fallure strength of the rock mass. In this study finite element model capable of analyzing the viscoplastic behavior of reinforced jointed rock mass has been developed based on equivalent material approach. Accuracy and reliability of the numerical model have verified by simuiating the behavior of simplified block model and comparing the results with analytic solutions. Practical applicability was also demonstrated by analyzing the time-dependent behavior of underground oil storage tunnel and assessing the reinforcement effect of rockbolt.

  • KSLV-I which is being developed in KARI is composed with two stages, and adaptor ring is used for coupling stage. Cables for interconnecting between stage is exposed on the outside. Also 8 pyro bolts which are installed in adaptor ring are used for separation of stage. In general, cowl is used for protecting exposed parts or structure which are anxious about damage from outer environment. In KSLV-I, two kind of cowls are designed. The one is umbilical cowl, and the other is pyro bolt cowl. Because cowl is exposed on the outside, heat and pressure load developed from air have effect on cowls. Therefore verification of structural strength through static analysis is required. In this study, static analysis in load condition except heat load is accomplished. In result of analysis, structural strength of pyro bolt cowl is verified. But breakage of umbilical cowl is confirmed in pressure load condition. So design of umbilical cowl is modified for satisfying required structural strength. And structural strength of umbilical cowl through analysis is verified.

  • The purpose of this study is to describe the Non-Destructive Testing(NDT) of the rockbolt and investigate the applicability of the NDT methods to estimate the integrity of the rockbolt. To examine the rockbolt integrity including rockbolt itself and grouting material, two methods are adopted: numerical and experimental methods. In the numerical method, the numerical code DISPERSE is used to analyze the dispersion of the rockbolt. The dispersion curve shows the effects of the thickness and stiffness of grouted materials on the embedded rockbolt. Therefore, the optimal frequency for the integrity test of the rockbolt is obtained: 20~120kHz in L(1,0) mode. In the experimental methods, destructive and non-destructive tests are carried out in a laboratory. In the non-destructive test, the low frequency mode generated by an impact and t he high frequency mode generated by an ultrasonic transducer seem to characterize the rockbolt condition readily. The experimental results show that the guided waves attenuate more significantly when the stiffness of the grouted material increases and/or the zone of the defect increases. Meanwhile, the ultimate capacity of rockbolt was evaluated through the pull-out tests and is compared to the NDT results. This study demonstrates that the NDT is a valuable tool for the rockbolt integrity evaluation.

  • An open frame structure is fastened by bolt joints for strength and shock attenuation. Therefore the full finite element model of an open frame structure should be properly modeled including bolt joints for strength analysis of the frames and joint assemblies which are operated under multi-loading conditions such as driving, drop, inertia and torsional loads. Then the joints and frames must satisfy the specified allowable strength constraints. Because the full finite element model has a large number of elements to perform strength analysis, a detailed fine bolt analysis seems to be very expensive. Therefore bolts of the full finite element model are approximately modeled by constraints equations to constrain degree of freedoms between adjacent nodes. However, the constraints equation method can exaggerate stress results at the constrained nodes. Thus a detailed bolt analysis and a theoretical/experiential formula of bolts for a worst bolt joint are performed using reaction force applied both bolt and bolt joint. Finally, the results from the two methods are compared and discussed to verify the safety of the open frame structure.

  • Payload fairing protects satellites and electrical equipments from the external environment. Payload fairing is jettisoned before satellite separation. Assembly frame for the separation of payload fairing were assembled with shear bolts. The role of shear bolts is to support structural load during flight and they are cut by explosion of pyro. The assembly frame which is connected by shear bolts is separated after the cutting of shear bolts. In this paper, structural tests and analysis were done for the design of the shear bolt. Compression, bending and shear load apply to the hardware including assembly frame. Test results showed that design of the shear bolt satisfied both structural strength for the support of flight load and required low strength for the cutting of shear bolts.
