  • This paper deals with numerical efficiency of nonlinear solution technique for space trusses. It will propose the combined Arc-length method to trace structural behavior after reaching buckling load as opposed to the current Arch-length method. The combined Arc-length method uses the current stiffness parameter as a control variable. It uses Secant-Newton method in stable path and applies Arc-length method in unstable path. To evaluate efficiency of solution technique, the accuracy of solution, convergence, and computing time concerning illustrative numerical examples are compared with the current Arc-length method. It show that the combined Arc-length method, as proposed in this paper, is superior to the current Arc-length method in numerical nonlinear analysis.

  • Cooling characteristics are investigated numerically in the chamber for high-performance burnout of wastes with solid phase. Before the combustion chamber is manufactured, combustion analysis is performed for evaluation of burning rate and cooling performance. A water cooling method is applied and its feasibility for cooling is examined depending on coolant flow rate. Another method of complex cooling is adopted by combining air film cooling with water cooling, leading to improved cooling performance.

  • Finite element method (FEM) is utilized in the development of products to realistically analyze and predict the mechanical behavior of materials in various fields. However, the approach based on the numerical analysis of glass fiber reinforced plastic (GFRP) composites, for which the fiber orientation and strain rate affect the mechanical properties, has proven to be challenging. The purpose of this study is to define and evaluate the mechanical properties of glass fiber reinforced plastic composites using the numerical analysis models of Digimat, a linear, nonlinear multi-scale modeling program for various composite materials such as polymers, rubber, metal, etc. In addition, the aim is to predict the behavior of realistic polymeric composites. In this regard, the tensile properties according to the fiber orientation and strain rate of polybutylene terephthalate (PBT) with short fiber weight fractions of 30wt% among various polymers were investigated using references. Information on the fiber orientation was calculated based on injection analysis using Moldflow software, and was utilized in the finite element model for tensile specimens via a mapping process. LS-Dyna, an explicit commercial finite element code, was used for coupled analysis using Digimat to study the tensile properties of composites according to the fiber orientation and strain rate of glass fibers. In addition, the drawbacks and advantages of LS-DYNA's various anisotropic material models were compared and evaluated for the analysis of glass fiber reinforced plastic composites.

  • In this paper, the surface settlement resulted from the shallow TBM tunnelling has been numerically simulated. TBM tunnelling is especially used in urban area to avoid serious vibration and noise caused by explosion in NATM. Surface settlement is one of the most important problems encountered in all tunnelling and critical in urban areas. In this study, face vibration of TBM excavation is considered to estimate surface settlement trend according to TBM extrusion. The dynamic excavation forces are calculated by total torque on the TBM cutterhead in mixed-face of soil and weathered rock condition with shallow depth. A 3-dimensional FDM code is employed to simulate TBM tunnelling and mechanical-dynamic coupling analysis is performed. The 3D numerical analysis results showed that dynamic settlement histories and trend of surface settlement successfully. The maximum settlement occurred at the excavation point located at 2.5D behind the face, and the effect of face vibration on the surface settlement was verified in this study.

  • The performance prediction of fiber-reinforced composites has attracted engineer's attention in many fields, and the various theoretical and numerical methods have been proposed to predict the behavior of the fiber-reinforced composites. An evolutionary damage model for progressive interfacial debonding between circular fibers and the matrix is newly incorporated into the micromechanics-based elastoplastic model proposed by Ju and Zhang (2001) in this framework. Using the proposed model, a series of numerical simulations are conducted to illustrate the elastoplastic behavior and evolutionary damage of the framework. Furthermore, the influence of the evolutionary interfacial debonding on the behavior of the composites is investigated by comparing it with the result of a stationary damage model.

  • This paper analyzed the partial differential equations of laminated composite shells of revolution by using the finite difference method. The proof that numerical results are reasonable and accurate is obtained through converge ratio analysis and commercial program LUSAS for the structural analysis. The purpose of this study is to examine closely the engineering advantages and to analyze the structural behaviors of the anisotropic shells of revolution. Thus, the relevant reinforcement and most suitable arrangement of fiber to produce the highest strength are proposed through the numerical results according to a variety of parameter study. Namely, the distribution of displacements and stress resultants are analyzed according to the change of meridian's curvature, the ratio of height-width of shell, subtended angle, fiber angle, and so on. Using these distribution, the most suitable shell may be proposed to produce the highest strength. Also, the configuration of the entire laminated composite conical shells is analysed, and a variety of the design criterion of circular conical shell are proposed and studied in engineering view points.

  • In this study, it was aimed to develop a thermal-hydraulic-mechanical coupled fracture mechanics code that models a fracture initiation, propagation and failure of underground rock mass due to thermal and hydraulic loadings. The development was based on a 2D FRACOD (Shen & Stephasson, 1993), and newly developed T-M and H-M coupled analysis modules were implemented into it. T-M coupling in FRACOD employed a fictitious heat source and time-marching method, and explicit iteration method was used in H-M coupling. The validity of developed coupled modules was verified by the comparison with the analytical result, and its applicability to the fracture initiation and propagation behavior due to temperature changes and hydraulic fracturing was confirmed by test simulations.

  • Purpose: This study attempts at analyzing mechanical response of functionally graded material (FGM) plates in bending. An accurate and effective numerical approach based on isogeometric analysis (IGA) combined with higher-order shear deformation plate theory to predict the nonlinear flexural behavior is developed. Method: A higher-order shear deformation theory(HSDT) which accounts for the geometric nonlinearity in the von Karman sense is presented and used to derive the equilibrium and governing equations for FGM plate in bending. The nonlinear equations are solved by the modified Newton-Raphson iterative technique. Result: The volume fraction, plate length-to-thickness ratio and boundary condition have signifiant effects on the nonlinear flexural behavior of FGM plates. Conclusion: The proposed IGA method can be used as an accurate and effective numerical tool for analyzing the mechanical responses of FGM plates in flexure.

  • In this paper, fracture behavior of laminated composites with notch was studied by cohesive zone modeling approach. The numerical modeling proceeded by first generating 3 dimensional solid element meshes for notched laminated composite coupon configurations. Then cohesive elements representing failure modes of fiber fracture, matrix cracking and delamination were inserted between bulk elements in all regions where the corresponding failures were likely to occur. Next, progressive failure analyses were performed simulating uniaxial tensile tests. The numerical results were compared to those by experiment available in the literature for verification of the analysis approach. Finally, notched laminated composite configurations with selected stacking sequences were analyzed and the failure behavior was carefully examined focusing on the failure initiation and progression and the dominating failure modes.

  • The numerical modeling and simulation have been used increasingly as tools for examining and interpreting the bulk structure and properties of materials. The use of molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to model the structure of materials is now both widespread and reasonably well understood. In this research, we introduced the numerical method to calculate the physico-chemical properties such as a diffusion coefficient and a viscosity of clay mineral. In this research, a series of MD calculations were performed for clay mineral and clay-water systems, appropriate to a saturated deep geological setting. Then, by using homogenization analysis (HA), the diffusion coefficients are calculated for conditions of the spatial distribution of the water viscosity associated with some configuration of clay minerals. This result of numerical analysis is quite similar to the previous experimental results. It means that the introduced numerical method is very useful to calculate the physico-chemical properties of clay minerals under various environmental conditions.
