In this paper a new concept on z-pinning technology named by authors as 'z-pinning patch' will be introduced, which advantage is easy application at manufacturing site of composite structures. Using the trial manufactured z-pinning patch, the z-pinned composite single-lap shear joint specimens were successfully manufactured and tested to check the improvement of joint strengths. The z-pin's material is stainless steel and its surface was machined as zagged shape and chemically corroded to improve joint force with composite materials.
In this study, repair and maintenance schemes of the damaged composite structure was investigated, and a repair process of the carbon/epoxy laminate composite structure was investigated numerically and experimentally. The composite laminates were damaged by drop weight type impact test machine. The damaged composite structure was repaired using external patch repair method after removing damaged area. The compressive strength test and analysis results after repairing the impact damaged specimens were compared with the compressive strength test and analysis results of undamaged specimens and impact damaged specimens. Finally, the strength recovery capability by repairing were investigated.

Edge notched A16061-T6 aluminum was repaired with a GFRP composite patch as a function of the number of stacking, Damage progress of specimen for tension load has been monitored by acoustic emission(AE), AE energy rate, hit rate, amplitude, waveform and 1st peak frequency distribution were analyzed. Fracture processes were classified into Al cracking, Fiber breakage, Resin cracking and Delamination. Displacement of a specimen can be divided into Region I, II and ill according to acoustic emission characteristics. Region II where the patch itself was actually fractured was focused on to clarify the AE characteristics difference for the number of stacking.

The fatigue crack growth behavior of a cracked and patch-repaired Ah2024-T3 panel has been monitored by acoustic emission(AE). The overall crack growth rate was reduced The crack propagation into the adjacent hole was also retarded by introducing the patch repair. AE signals due to crack growth after the patch repair and those due to debonding of the plate-patch interface were discriminated by usiag the principal component analysis. The former showed high center frequency and low amplitude, whereas the latter showed long rise tine, low frequency and high amplitude. This type of AE signal recognition method could be effective for the prediction of fatigue crack growth behavior in the patch-repaired structures with the aid of AE source location.

Recently the authors had proposed the z-pinning patch concept to simply manufacture z-pinned composite structures at industrial production site and manufactured composite single-lap shear joint specimens using the concept. Through static tensile test on the specimens they had obtained 54~68% improvement of the joint strength. As a sequential study of it, in this study, fatigue test has performed to measure an improvement of joint strength under cyclic loading. The z-pin's material is stainless steel and its surface was specially machined into zagged shapes and chemically corroded to increase the connection force with composite materials. Approximately 98~125% improvement of the joint strength under cyclic loading was obtained.

One of the hot issues in composite patching is to reduce the thermal residual stresses between composite patch and aluminum surface which occurs after bonding of composite patch. In this study, the edge crack patching is adopted for different curing cycles. For the analysis, three layer Mindlin plate elements are used, and Paris' law is adopted to predict the fatigue life of composite patch plate. The analysis results show a good agreement with the experimental fatigue life and this technique can be applied for the prediction of fatigue life of aircraft structures.
In the case of a conventional composite patch repair using a heat blanket, the adhesive is pressurized using only a vacuum bag. In this study, however, a pressurization system has been developed to apply additional air pressure on the vacuum bag. In order to verify the performance of the developed system, the composite laminates were repaired with scarf patches and then tested under tensile load to be compared with the strength of the defect-free laminate. Tensile tests were also conducted on specimens with the same configuration but bonded in an autoclave. As a result of the test, the tensile strengths of the specimens repaired using the heat blanket with vacuum only without external pressure, the specimens repaired with additional pressure by the developed system, and the specimens repaired with the same external pressure in an autoclave, showed the strength recovery ratios of 74.9, 81.0, and 78.2%, respectively. The results of the tensile test after moisture saturation and the dried fatigue test also showed that the strength recovery ratios of the specimens repaired under the external pressure of 1 atm using the developed system are slightly higher than that of specimens bonded in autoclave.
An analytical study was conducted to characterize the fatigue crack growth behavior of pre-cracked aluminum plates repaired with asymmetric bonded composite patch. For single-sided repairs, due to the asymmetry and the presence of out-of$.$plane bending, crack front shape would become skewed curvilinear started from a uniform through-crack profile, as observed from Previous studies. Therefore, for the accurate investigation of fatigue behavior, it is necessary to predict the actual crack front evolution and take it into consideration in the analysis. In this study, the fatigue analysis of single-sided repairs considering crack front shape development was conducted by implementing three-dimensional successive finite element method coupled with linear elastic fracture mechanics (LEFM) concept, which enables the growing crack front to be directly traced and modeled in a step by step way. Through conducting present analysis technique, crack path of the patched plate as well as the fatigue life was evaluated with sufficient accuracy. The analytical predictions of both the crack front shape evolution and the fatigue life were in good agreement with the experimental observations.
