Mechanical evaluation of SiC-graphite interface of seed crystal module for growing SiC single crystals (탄화규소 단결정 성장을 위한 종자결정모듈의 탄화규소-흑연 간 접합계면의 기계적 특성 평가)

  • Large thermal stress due to the difference between silicon carbide and graphite's coefficients of thermal expansion could be formed during crystal growing process of silicon carbide (SiC) at high temperature. The large thermal stress could separate the SiC seed crystals from graphite components, which bring about the drop of the seed crystal during crystal growth. However, the bonding properties of SiC seed crystal module has hardly reported so far. In this study, SiC and graphite were bonded using 3 types of bonding agents and a three-point bending tests using a mixed-mode flexure test were conducted for the bonded samples to evaluate the bonding characteristics between SiC and graphite. Raman spectroscopy, X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy, and X-ray Computed Tomography were used to analyze the bonding characteristics and the microstructures of the SiC-graphite interfaces bonded with the bonding agents. As results, an excellent bonding agent was chosen to fabricate SiC seed crystal module with 50 mm in diameter. An SiC single crystal with 50 mm in diameter was successfully grown without falling out during top seeded solution growth of SiC at high temperature.

Comparison on Accuracy of Static and Dynamic Contact Angle Methods for Evaluating Interfacial Properties of Composites (복합재료의 계면특성 평가를 위한 접촉각 방법의 정확도 비교)

  • To analyze the interfacial property between the fiber and the matrix, work of adhesion was used generally that was calculated by surface energies. In this paper, it was determined what types of contact angle measurement methods were more accurate between static and dynamic contact angle measurements. 4 types of glass fiber and epoxy resin were used each other to measure the contact angle. The contact angle was measured using two types, static and dynamic contact angle methods, and work of adhesion, Wa was calculated to compare interfacial properties. The interfacial property was evaluated using microdroplet pull-out test. Generally, the interfacial property was proportional to work of adhesion. In the case of static contact angle, however, work of adhesion was not consistent with interfacial property. It is because that dynamic contact angle measurement comparing to static contact angle could delete the error due to microdroplet size to minimize the surface area as well as the meniscus measuring error.

  • We have studied a method for the preparation of $ACF/TiO_2$ composites involving the penetrationof titanium n-butoxide (TNB) solution into activated carbon fiber. It was focused on the characterization of $TiO_2$ formed in prorous carbon was which increased with surface functional groups by hydrochloric acid treatment. The conversion of TNB to $TiO_2$ for the acid treatment effect must be important for the preparationof $ACF/TiO_2$ composites. From the characterization of surface properties, both the BET surface area and the total pore volume decreased as the distribution of $TiO_2$ on the activated carbon fiber surfaces after acid treatments.The changes in XRD pattern showed the typical anatase type on $ACF/TiO_2$ composite for the sample named FT, FT1 and FT2 treated with 0.05, 0.1 and 0.5 M, respectively. However, XRD patern of FT3 treated with 0.5M showed mixed amatase-rutile structure. According to the results of SEM micrographs, the titanium complexe particles were irregularly distributed around carbon. And some large clusters were found when an amount of acid treatment increased. The EDX results of $ACF/TiO_2$ composites showed the presence of C, O and P with strong Ti peaks. Finally, the excellent photocatalytic activity of the $ACF/TiO_2$ composites between relative concentration($c/c_o$) of MB (methylene blue) and UV irradiation time could be attributed to the both effects between photocatalysis of the formation of titania complexes and adsorptivity of the activated carbon fiber.

  • Recently, the progress of smart phone market has retarded by oversupply therefore wearable computer has been the focus of new growth engine. Wearable computing system is a complex fusion of a variety of technologies such as wireless network, embedded, sensor and new material. Because these technologies involves utilization and mobility in addition to quality characteristic in existing software, application of ISO/IEC 9126 is not perfect when assessing quality of wearable computer. In this study, author suggested new quality assessment model for wearable computer by sorting quality attribute in ISO/IEC 9126 and adding new quality attribute. For this, author investigated features and functional requirements related to wearable computer. and then author suggested quality standard and metrics by identifying quality characteristic. Author confirmed practicality of quality assessment model by using suggested model in scenario and comparing quality assessment of three goods such as company S, L, G. This quality assessment model is expected to use guidelines for assessing quality of wearable computer.

  • The Fiber/Metal Laminates (FMLs) have been developed as a new composite material for aerospace application to reduce weight and improve damage tolerance. In this study, firstly FMLs were manufactured and the tensile test was performed to investigate the mechanical properties of FMLs. Furthermore, impact behavior of the low velocity on FMLs which consisted of different types of aluminum or fiber/epoxy layers was tested by the drop weight impact tester based on the different impact energy conditions. The load-time and energy-time curves were employed to evaluate the impact performance of different specimens. Moreover, finite element analysis (FEA) was also performed to simulate the tensile test and impact behavior of FMLs under the same conditions with the tests and good agreements have been obtained between the FEA predictions and experimental results.

  • Thermoplastic elastomers are being used increasingly throughout industry owing to their superior properties, such as superior elasticity, formability, and recoverability. Currently, research related to thermoplastic elastomers is focused on the development of composite elastomers by combining with various materials and the development of equipment. On the other hand, in the field of small and medium sized companies, it is necessary to study not only the application of these new materials, but also the process conditions that enable the extrusion of thermoplastic elastomers in inexpensive uniaxial screwing equipment. If extrusion is performed in a single screw extruder, it is important to maintain a uniform thickness through process control of the extruder. This study examined the effects of the processing temperature, which is an extrusion process variable, on the formability of a tube in the thermoplastic elastomer TPE-800L uniaxial extrusion process. The nozzle zone temperature is the most important factor in the extrusion of thermoplastic elastomer TPE-800L; the most excellent moldability was confirmed at $165-170^{\circ}C$.

  • 저탄소강은 일반적으로 용접성이 우수하지만 완전한 접합 강도와 용접부에서의 결함을 방지하기 위해서는 많은 주위가 필요하다. 용접부의 기계적 성질은 그 미세구조에 따라 좌우되는데, 이 구조는 모재의 화학조성, 용접 조건 그리고 후열처리에 의하여 결정이 된다. 이와 같이 용융용 접에 의한 저탄소강의 접합부는 저탄소함량으로 응고 균열에 대한 저항이 높다. 그러나 탄소의 함량이 증가하므로서 용접성은 저하하여, 0.3% 이상에서 용접부는 과열, 과냉, 저온 균열과 porosity에 취약하게 된다. 구조용강애 있어서는 용접성에 대한 일반적인 기준이 없으므로 이 러한 재료는 모재와 용접부의 기계적 성질, 고온 및 저온 균열성, 열간 및 냉각가공성등을 고려 하게 된다. 그러나 가장 중요한 것은 용접부의 신뢰도이다. 탄소강과 저합금강에 있어서 용접은 높은 강도를 얻을 수 있어야 하며 접합부에서 모재의 원래의 특성을 유지하여야 하고 결함이 없어야 할 것이다. 이와 같은 결함은 모재의 융접 이하에서 접합을 실시하는 고상접합으로 충 분히 억제할 수가 있다. 고상접합에서는 근본적인 미세조직의 결정화도 피할 수 있으며 고온균 일과 같은 결함의 위험도 배제할 수 있다. 고상접합은 용융용접과는 달리 모재를 용융시키지 않고 고체상태에서 접합을 하는데, 신금속 및 신소재의 개발과 첨단산업의 발달로 고상접합 기 술이 크게 각광을 받고 발전하게 되었다. 이와 같은 접합기술의 발전으로 기존의 용접으로는 접합이 불가한 소재, 용접기술의 적용이 곤란한 복잡한 형상, 복합기능 소재, 고품질 및 고정밀 성이 요구되는 소재등이 접합이 가능하게 되었다. 이러한 접합기술로는 brazing, 확산접합, 마찰 용접 등이 주로 많이 이용되고 있다. Brazing은 융점이 낮은 filler metal이 모재의 사이에서 용 융상태로 유입되어 냉각되면서 접합되는 방식이고 확산접합은 모재의 접합계면에서 원자의 상호 확산으로 접합을 하게 된다. 한편 마찰용접은 계면에서 회전에 의한 마찰열고 접합하는 방식 이다. 본 기술해설에서는 이러한 고상접합 기술을 이용한 철강재료의 접합에 대하여 고찰하도록 하겠다.

  • Recently, LG chemical corporation developed new material called HYPERIER, which has an excellent barrier characteristic. It has many layers which are made of nano-composite within LDPE(Low-Density Poly Ethylene). In order to guarantee the quality of the final product from the production line, a certain test equipment is required to investigate the existence of layers inside the HYPERIER. In this work, ultrasonic sensor based test equipment for investigating the existence of inner layers is proposed. However, it is a tedious job for human operators to check the existence by just looking at the resounding waveform from ultrasonic sensor. Therefore, to enhance the performance of the ultrasonic test equipment, Fast Fourier Transform(FFT) and Principle Components Analysis(PCA) and Back-Propagation Neural Network(BPNN) are utilized which is used for classification of Quality. To verily the feasibility of the proposed scheme, some experiments are executed.

Effects of Processing Parameters on the Fabrication of in-situ Al/TiC Composites by Thermally Activated Combustion Reaction Process in an Aluminium Melt using Al-TiO2-C Powder Mixtures (알루미늄 용탕에서 Al-TiO2-C의 연소합성반응에 의한 in-situ Al/TiC 복합재료의 제조에 미치는 공정변수의 영향)

  • A feasible way to fabricate in-situ Al/TiC composites was investigated. An elemental mixture of $Al-TiO_2-C$ pellet was directly added into an Al melt at $800-920^{\circ}C$ to form TiC by self-combustion reaction. The addition of CuO initiates the self-combustion reaction to form TiC in $1-2{\mu}m$ at the melt temperature above $850^{\circ}C$. Besides the CuO addition, a diluent element of excess Al plays a significant role in the TiC formation by forming a precursor phase, $Al_3Ti$. Processing parameters such as CuO content, the amount of excess Al and the melt temperature, have affected the combustion reaction and formation of TiC, and their influences on the microstructures of in-situ Al/TiC composites are examined.

  • Global production of zinc is about 13 million tons and zinc is the fourth-most widely used primary metal in the world following iron, aluminum and copper. When zinc is recycled to produce secondary zinc, it can save about 75 % of the total energy that is needed to produce the primary zinc from ore, and in therms of $CO_2$ emissions reduced by about 40 %. However, since zinc is mainly used for galvanizing of steel, the recycling rate of zinc is about 25 %, which is lower than other metals. The raw materials for recycling of zinc include dusts generated in the production of steel and brass, sludge in the production process of non-ferrous metals, dross in the melting of zinc ingots or hot dip galvanizing, waste batteries, and metallic scrap. Among them, steelmaking dust and waste batteries are most actively recycled up to now. Most of the recycling process uses pyrometallurgical methods. Recently, however, much attention has been given to a combined process of pyrometallurgical and hydrometallurgical processes.
