The purpose of this study was to compare EMG and GRF during a free throw. Seven pairs of surface electrodes were attached to the right-hand side of the body to monitor the flexor carpi radialis (FC), extensor carpi radialis longus (EC), biceps brachii (BB), triceps brachii (TB), rectus femoris (RF), tibialis anterior (TA) and medial gastrocnemius (GM). GRF data from two force platform were collected during a free throw. The results showed that the muscle activities in the unskilled group must be highly activated prior to the moment of release. This means that a skilled participant can shoot a free throw more efficiently while producing less muscle activeness than an unskilled participant. The DCP of unskilled group in the medio-lateral direction were greater than the corresponding values in skilled group. This showed that the unskilled group were not able to shoot the free throws stably. Thus, when a teacher or instructor teaches students how to shoot free throw, it is considered that the teacher show the learner how to use not only the upper limbs but also lower limbs on the basis of the efficent connecting movement and the flexibility in a stable procedure.

The purpose of this study was to examine contraction of abdominal muscles on surface electromyographic (EMG) activity of superficial cervical flexors, rib cage elevation and angle of craniocervical flexion during deep cervical flexion exercise in supine position. Fifteen healthy subjects were participated for this study. All subjects performed deer cervical flexion exercise with two methods. The positions of two methods were no volitional contraction of abdominal muscles in hook-lying position with 45 degree hip flexion (method 1) and 90 degrees hip and knee flexion with feet off floor for inducing abdominal muscle contraction (method 2). Surface EMG activities were recorded from five muscles (sternocleidmastoid, anterior scaleneus, recuts abdominis, external oblique, internal oblique). And distance of rib cage elevation and angle of craniocervical flexion were measured using a three dimensional motion analysis system. The EMG activity of each muscle was normalized to the value of reference voluntary contraction (%RVC). The EMG activities, distance of rib cage elevation. and angle of craniocervical were compared using a paired t-test between two methods. The results showed that the EMG activities of sternocleidmastoid and anterior scaleneus during deep cervical flexion exercise in method 2 were significantly decreased compared to method 1 (p<.05). Distance of rib cage elevation and angle of craniocervical flexion were significantly decreased in method 2 (p<.05). The findings of this study indicated that deep cervical flexion exercise with contraction of abdominal muscles could be an effective method to prevent substitute motion for rib cage elevation and contraction of superficial neck flexor muscles.

The purpose of this study was to investigate effects of the long-term high-frequency transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation(TENS) on the spasticity and the balance in chronic stroke patients. Twenty-six subjects with spasticity over lower limbs were allocated randomly into two groups under standard rehabilitation: (1) TENS group, (2) placebo-TENS group. TENS stimulation was applied on the both the gastrocnemius for 30 minutes, 5 days a week for 4 weeks(100 Hz, 0.25 ms, 2 times sensory threshold). The Modified Ashworth Scale(MAS) and Hand-held manual muscle tester were used to assess the ankle plantarflexor spasticity. Balance function under three conditions was measured by using force-plate and the amount of postural sway was assessed; in (1) the condition of standing with eyes opened, (2) with eyes closed and (3) the condition of standing on unstable surface with eyes opened. Both groups showed significant improvement in spasticity and balance function after treatment for 4 weeks(p<.05). Especially, TENS group showed a significant reduction of spasticity compared to placebo-TENS group(p<.05). These results suggested that additional stimulation of a long-term high-frequency TENS to standard rehabilitation induced an improved balance function and a spasticity reduction. The long-term application of high-frequency TENS will be an effective intervention for reducing spasticity and increasing balance ability in the chronic stroke patients.

The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) according to frequency and intensity on postural sway distance and velocity. TENS was applied to posterior aspect of the dominant leg with postural sway during one leg stance. Twenty-four healthy participants were measured while standing on a force platform with 5 different stimulation dosages of no TENS, high frequency and high intensity, high frequency and low intensity, low frequency and high intensity, low frequency and low intensity applied in 30 seconds. The five different dosages were performed with vision in random order. The results indicated that TENS dosage in the high frequency and low intensity had a significant decrease in postural sway(p<.05). From these results, we concluded that TENS delivered a high frequency and low intensity enhanced the postural sway in healthy adults. We expect that the postural sway of patients with decreased balance will reduce by application of TENS.

The aim of this study is to evaluate university canadian paddlers' iso-kinetic muscle function and provide training advices. Eight university paddlers with a 8.5 years career participated in this study. Inbody 720, biodex system III, biodex stabilizer system and THP 2 are used to investigate body component, muscle function(peak torque, average power and work fatigue), agility and dynamic balance. Iso-kinetic muscle function around shoulder, thorax and knee are measured. And then bilateral and unilateral muscle imbalance are calculated at each joint. Results of this study are as follows; University canadian paddlers' BMI average is 24.90 $kg/m^2$ and percent body fat is 12.23%. Reaction time average was 324 msec and balance score at each leg are below 2.0. A3, A4, A5, A6, A8 are needed to train shoulder muscle strength and power. A1, A2, A7, A8 are needed to strengthen shoulder muscle endurance. A2, A5, A8 are needed to train thorax muscle strength and power. A1, A8 are needed to strengthen thorax muscle endurance. Most of paddlers' reciprocal muscle balance ratio on thorax and knee are out of normal range. A2, A3, A4, A8 are needed to train abdominal strength and A3, A5, A6, A7, A8 are needed to train hamstring strength.
We investigated the effect of mountain ginseng-added high fat diet supplementation on lipid peroxidation and antioxidant protein expressions in rats. Thirty-two male rats were randomly divided into 4 groups; HS (high-fat diet sedentary group, n=8), MG1 (0.5% mountain ginseng-added diet group, n=8), MG2 (1% mountain ginsengadded diet group, n=8) and MG3 (2% mountain ginseng-added diet group, n=8). They have fed the diet for 4 weeks. The blood triglyceride were significantly lower in the MG1 and MG2 groups than that of the HS group. The blood HDL-cholesterol were significantly higher in the MG3 group than that of the HS and MG2 groups. The muscle glycogen contents of the MG2 and MG3 groups were significantly higher than that of HS and MG1 groups. The MDA contents in the MG1, MG2 and MG3 groups tended to lower than the HS group. The GPx protein expression in the gastrocnemius muscle of the MG2 group was significantly increased compared to that of the HS group. The Cu,Zn-SOD protein expression in the gastrocnemius muscle of the MG1 and MG2 groups was significantly increased compared to that of the MG3 group. The Mn-SOD protein expression in the MG1, MG2 and MG3 groups tended to higher than the HS group. From these results, it was suggested that mountain ginseng-added diet may have an crucial role on decreased MDA levels and increased antioxidant function in the skeletal muscle of rat fed a high fat diet.

Purpose: In the cases of a vascular compromised condition in an injured lower extremity, soft tissue coverage with free tissue transfer presents a challenging problem to the reconstructive surgeon. For this reason, cross - leg flaps are still used in unusual circumstances. Advances in surgical technique has made the cross - leg free flap possible although it may require long operation time along with significant donor site morbidity. Therefore, a pedicled cross - leg muscle flap may be an alternative treatment modality when local flap or free flap is not possible. Methods: Twelve patients(9 males and 3 females) underwent the operation between October of 2001 and December of 2008. The patients' age ranged from 6 to 82 years. The unusual defects included the regions such as the knee, popliteal fossa, distal third of the tibia, dorsal foot, and the heel. Indications for the cross - leg gastrocnemius flap are inadequate recipient vessels for free flap(in eight cases), extensive soft tissue injuries(in three cases) and free flap failure(in one case). The muscle flap was elevated from contralateral leg and transferred to the soft tissue defect on the lower leg while both legs were immobilized with two connected external fixator systems. Delay procedure was performed 2 weeks postoperatively, and detachment was done after the establishment of the adequate circulation. The average period from the initial flap surgery to detachment was 32 days (3 to 6 weeks). Mean follow - up period was 4 years. Results: Stable coverage was achieved in all twelve patients without any flap complications. Donor site had minimal scarring without any functional and cosmetic problems. No severe complications such as deep vein thrombosis or flap necrosis were noted although mild to moderate contracture of the knee and ankle joint developed due to external fixation requiring 3 to 4 weeks of physical treatment. All patients were able to walk without crutches 3 months postoperatively. Conclusion: Although pedicled cross - leg flaps may not substitute free flap surgery, it may be an alternative method of treatment when free flap is not feasible. Using this modification of the gastrocnemius flap we managed to close successfully soft tissue defects in twelve patients without using free tissue transfers.

Gluten is an insoluble protein present in cereals such as wheat. Gluten consumed through food is not digested and accumulates in the body; this has been linked to digestive discomfort, irritation, and various digestive disorders, including intestinal inflammation. In this study, the Lactobacillus paracasei strain GLU70, which exhibits a glutendegrading ability, was isolated from salted seafood. At a pH of 3.0, GLU70 showed a survival rate of approximately 84%, and at 0.3% oxgall, it showed a survival rate of approximately 53%. When the culture supernatant collected after 12 h of incubation was added to flour dough, approximately 50% gluten degradation was observed. Moreover, among several probiotic isolates exhibiting proteolytic activity selected to assess the gluten-degrading ability, GLU70 showed superior results regardless of the dough fermentation temperature. Although further research is required, GLU70 is expected to be of value in manufacturing gluten-reduced products and the food industry as an ingredient or additive.

Stomatognathic system is a complex one that is composed of TMJ, neuromuscular system, teeth and connective tissue, and all its components are doing their parts to maintain their physiological relationships. Mandible, in particular, performs various functions such as mastication, speech, and deglutition, the muscular activities that determine such functions are signalled by numerous types of proprioceptors that exist in periodontal membrane, TMJ, and muscles to be controlled by complicated pathways and mechanics of peripheral and central nervous system. Orthodontic treatment, especially when accompanied by orthognathic surgery, brings dramatic changes of stornatognat is system such as intraoral proprioceptors and muscle activities and thus, changes in patterns of mandibular function result The author tried to analyze changes in patterns of mandibular movement and physiologic activities of surrounding muscles in Skeletal Class III ortlrognathic surgery patients who presently show a great increase in numbers. The purpose of this study was to draw some objective guidelines in evaluating funclierual aspects of orthognathic surgery patients. Mandibular functional analysis using Biopak was performed for skeletal Class III prognathic patients who underwent IVRO(lntraoral Vertical Ramus Osteotmy), and the following results were obtained: 1. Resting EMG was greater in pre-surgical group than the control group, and it showed gradual decrease after the surgery. Clenching EMG of masseter and anterior temporalis of pre-surgical group was smaller than those of control group, they also increased post-surgically, and significant difference was found between pre-surgical and post-surgical(6 months) groups. 2. Resting EMG of anterior ternporalis was greater than that of all the other muscles, but there was no significant difference. Clenching EMG of anterior temporalis and masseter were greater than those of the other muscles with statistical difference. In swallowing, digastric muscle showed the highest EMG with statistical significance. 3. Limited range of mandibular movement was shown in pre-surgical group. Significant increase in maximum mouth opening was observed six months post-surgically, and significant increase in protrusive movement was observed three months post-surgically.
The benficial effects for perfusion in the preservation of free flaps have been controversial in the clinical and experimental field until now. This study was undertaken to observe the effect of UW solution. a recently developed. high molecular weight. organ perfusion solution. for protection of ischemic injury in normothermic free myocutaneous flaps. Forty rabbits were used in this sutdy. A 1x2x1cm sized gastrocnemius myocutaneous flap based on the feeding vessel from common femoral artery was made. The author set up the ischemic time for 12 hours in these flaps. The flap was washed out with normal saline(control grop, n=10), urokinase(comparative group I, n=10), UW solution before ischemic time(comparative group II, n=10) and UW solution before ischemic time and pentoxifylline before reperfusion(comparative group III, n=10). Afterthen, reperfusion was made for 12 hours. After this procedure, we checked the degree of ischemia and necrosis of myocutaneous flap by gross finding, electrical stimulation test of muscle, triphenyltetrazolium chloride staining and wet/dry weight ratio. The degree of necrosis of comparative group II and III were lesser than control and urokinase group in gross finding(p<0.05). In the electrical stimulation test of muscle, there was no statistical difference between control($1.76{\pm}1.01$) and urokinase($2.36{\pm}\1.02$) group however the muscular power of comparative group II($3.54{\pm}0.93$) and III($3.49{\pm}1.37gm/mm^2$) demonstrated significantly higher than control group(p<0.05). The ischemic findings were found in seven cases of control group and three cases of urokinase group but there were no ischemic findings in comparative group II and III in TIC stain(p<0.05). In the wet/dry weight ratio of flaps in order to evaluate the tissue edema. there was no statistical difference between control($4.55{\pm}0.29$) and III($3.75{\pm}0.48$) were scored significantly lesser than control and urokinase group (p<0.05). These results suggest that perfusion washout with UW solution improves the viability of normothermic free myocutaneous flap by inhibition of cellular swelling.
