  • The hysteretic behavior of steel structure under cyclic and dynami loading such as earthquake is different to that under static loading. Because structural steels on dynamic deformation is different to static deformation with respect with mechanical characteristics and stress-strain relationship. Therefore, to accurately predict the hysteretic behavior of steel structures such as circular steel columns under cyclic and dynamic loading, the difference of loading carrying capacity and deformation according to loading rate, assumed static and dynamic deformation state, must be investigated. In this study, numerical analyses of circular steel column using SM490 for change of loading rate and diameter-thickness ratio(D/t) were carried out by using three-dimensional elastic-plastic finite element analysis and dynamic cyclic plasticity model of SM490 developed by the authors. Characteristics of hysteretic behavior of circular steel column using SM490, load carrying capacity and energy dissipation ratio, were clarified by analysis results.

  • Two full scale precast pretensioned dapped ended rectangular beams designed by PCI design handbook for a major domestic live load of market and parking building - 500kgf/㎡ and 1,200kgf/㎡ were investigated experimentally. The bottom length of beams was 60cm which was same to the length of rectangular column in the base of five-story market or parking buildings. The height of dap was web hight plus half of the flange height within the allowable limit of PCI method. Shear tests were performed on four beam ends. Followings were obtained from the experimental study. All of the specimens were fully complied with the PCI design handbook. Two of four specimens which were designed for live load of 1,200kgf/㎡ showed crackings at the re-entrant corner of dap before the full service loadings, and failed by direct shear at the load level much less than their calculated nominal strength. The specimens designed for live load of 1,200kgf/㎡ failed at 772 tonf and 78.36tonf by direct shear crackings. This strength was less than PCI limit of 81.9 tonf and higher than ACI limit of 65.62tonf. Thus, the limit suggested by ACI seems more reasonable in regard of safety in view of this test results. According to load-strain curves, the strain of hanger reinforcement reached almost yield strain. It is recommended to use more inclined hanger reinforcement of improve the strength and serviceability.

  • In this study, the flexural characteristics of reinforced polymer concrete T-beams strengthened with GFRP, typically used for bridges and parking structures, are investigated. A method to determine the flexural failure mode of reinforced polymer concrete T-beams comprised of compression failure (CF), tension failure (TF), and fiber sheet failure (FF) for different levels of GFRP strengthening is proposed. Moreover, the present study provides a formula to calculate the design flexural strength for each failure mode. In reinforced polymer concrete T-beams strengthened with GFRP, an ideal failure mode can be achieved when the failure occurs in the following order: 1) yield of steel reinforcement, 2) failure of GFRP, and 3) compression failure of concrete. In the case of FF mode, due to GFRP failure before the polymer concrete crushing in compression region, a concept of equivalent rectangular block based on the ultimate limit state of concrete should not be used. Thus, this study suggests an idealized stress-strain curve for polymer concrete and finds parameters for stress block, ${\alpha}$ and ${\beta}$ based on the strain distribution in polymer concrete. Furthermore, the present study suggests an aspect ratio of 2.5 by examining the compressive stress distribution and design flexural strength characteristics for different aspect ratio of T-beams. This study also provides a design flexural strength formula, and validates its acceptability based on experiment and theoretical analysis.

  • The purpose of this paper is to evaluate potential application of Lightweight Piezo-composite Actuator (LIPCA) to suppress vibrations of structures. The LIPCA, consisting of a piezoelectric layer, a carbon/epoxy layer and glass/epoxy layers, has advantages in terms of high performance, durability and reliability, compared to the bare piezoelectric ceramic (PZT) actuator. We performed two kinds of experiments on static actuation and active vibration suppression to investigate the actuation performances of the LIPCA and the bare PZT. We attached the actuator on one side and a strain gage on the other side of an aluminum beam. In the static actuation test, we evaluated the performance by comparing equivalent actuation moments of the LIPCA and the bare PZT due to the applied voltage. In the active vibration control test, control signals were generated to suppress the vibration of the beam by the PID control algorithm based on the measured strain signals. The performances were estimated based on settling times of the strain responses. It can be concluded that the LIPCA has better actuation performances than the bare PZT in active control of free vibration as well as static actuation.

  • This paper describes large-scale pullout test results of geosynthetic strip, which can be applied in reinforced earth wall with block-type wall facing. The pullout tests are conducted to evaluate the strain distribution, the induced pullout force and the pullout strength. The maximum pullout force is appeared regardless of reinforcement width and normal stress when end displacement is less than 15 mm. The pullout behavior based on horizontal spacing of reinforcement was similar in relationship between pullout force and end displacement. The strain distribution and pullout force distribution of the geosynthetic strip are concentrated in the front part of reinforcement, and it appeared clearly in higher normal stress condition This means that the pullout behavior of geosynthetic strip is affected by the bond between soil and friction resistance reinforcement according normal stress. Therefore, the pullout resistance design is reasonable when pullout behavior of geosynthetic strip should be evaluated by effective length considering tensile characteristic.

  • The study area, which is located in the southeastern part of the Jirisan province, Yeongnam massif, Korea, is mainly composed of the Precambrian Hadong southern anorthosite complex (HSAC), the Jirisan metamorphic rock complex (JMRC) and Cretaceous sedimentary rock which unconformably covers them. Lithofacies distribution of the Precambrian constituent rocks mainly shows NS and partly NE trends. This paper researched deformational phased structural characteristics of HSAC and JMRC based on the geometric and kinematic features and the forming sequence of multi-deformed rock structures, and suggests that the geological structures of this area was formed through at least three phases of ductile deformation. The first phase ($D_1$) of deformation happened due to the large-scale top-to-the SE shearing, and formed the sheath or "A"-type fold and the regional tectonic frame of NE trend in the HSAC and JMRC. The second phase ($D_2$) of deformation, like the $D_1$ deformation, regionally occurred under the EW-directed tectonic compression, and most of the NE-trending $D_1$ tectonic frame was reoriented into NS trend by the active and passive folding, and the persistent and extensive ductile shear zone (Hadong shear zone) with no less than 2.3~1.4 km width was formed along the eastern boundary of HSAC and JMRC through the mylonitization process. The third phase ($D_3$) of deformation occurred under the NS-directed tectonic compression, and partially reoriented the pre-$D_3$ structural elements into ENE or WNW direction. It means that the distribution of Precambrian lithofacies showing NE trend locally and NS trend widely in this area is closely associated with the $D_1$ and $D_2$ deformations, respectively, and the NS-trending Hadong shear zone in the eastern part of Hadong northern anorthosite complex, which is located in the north of Deokcheon River, also extends into the HSAC with continuity.

  • Asymptotic analysis is a powerful tool for the mathematically rigorous design and analysis of anisotropic beam structures. However, it has a limitation in that the asymptotic approach requires asymptotically correct boundary conditions for higher-order solutions, which are often needed for beams weak in shear. A method utilizing Saint-Venant's principle was proposed in a previous work to improve the stress state of isotropic beams and plates. In this paper, such a method is generalized for anisotropic beams, so that one does not need to consider the asymptotically correct boundary conditions for higher-order solutions. Consequently, solving the recursive system equations is not necessary, which makes the method very efficient in terms of accuracy and computational effort.

  • 3D finite element analyses of a corrugated steel web girder and a steel truss web girder are conducted to investigate the static and dynamic behaviour of the hybrid girders. And the analyses results are compared with those by the equivalent beam theory. The equivalent theory is a theory that all section properties of a truss structure are replaced by section properties of a beam including a shear coefficient. When applying the equivalent beam theory, the shear coefficient of the corrugated steel web girder is estimated as the area ratio of flange section to web section and that of the steel truss web girder is calculated by the equation proposed by Abdel. Static deflections and natural frequencies by 3D finite element analyses and those by the equivalent beam theory are in good agreement.

  • Detailed mapping along the Keumwang fault reveals a complex history of multiple brittle reactivations following late Jurassic and early Cretaceous ductile shearing. The fault core consists of a 10~50 m thick fault gouge layer bounded by a 30~100 m thick damaged zone. The Pre-cambrian gneiss and Jurassic granite underwent at least six distinct stages of fault movements based on deformation environment, time and mechanism. Each stage characterized by fault kinematics and dynamics at different deformation environment. Stage 1 generated mylonite series along the Keumwang shear zone by sinistral ductile shearing during late Jurassic and early Cretaceous. Stage 2 was a mostly brittle event generating cataclasite series superimposed on the mylonite series of the Keumwang shear zone. The roundness of pophyroclastes and the amount of matrix increase from host rocks to ultracataclasite indicating stronger cataclastic flow toward the fault core. At stage 3, fault gouge layer superimposed on the cataclasite generated during stage 2 and the sedimentary basins (Umsung and Pungam) formed along the fault by sinistral strike-slip movement. Fragments of older cataclasite suspended in the fault gouge suggest extensive reworking of fault rocks at brittle deformation environments. At stage 4, systematic en-echelon folds, joints and faults were formed in the sedimentary basins by sinistral strike-slip reactivation of the Keumwang fault. Most of the shearing is accommodated by slip along foliations and on discrete shear surfaces, while shear deformation tends to be relatively uniformly distributed within the fault damage zone developed in the mudrocks in the sedimentary basins. Fine-grained andesitic rocks intruded during stage 4. Stage 5 dextral strike-slip activity produced shear planes and bands in the andesitic rocks. ESR(Electron Spin Resonance) dates of fault gouge show temporal clustering within active period and migrating along the strike of the Keumwang fault during the stage 6 at the Quaternary period.
