  • Pedestrian environment not only affects the quantitative degree in pedestrian movement, but also an impact on the local economics and environment that speaks within the greater dialogue of the qualitative life in an urban context. Recent urban planning issues have matured from a linear street development to a conversion of pedestrian friendly streets that synchronizes the entire pedestrian movement structures as a whole. Subject cases, Myung-Dong and Kwanchul-Dong, were selected from time regulated pedestrian streets in Seoul. Analysis of these streets was done through field studies and interviews. From the research, the outcome was helpful in providing the developers a greater perspective with the pedestrian movement structure that is not confined to a certain parameter, but in a larger scale within the urban environment. It was also useful in justifying ambiguous locations of pedestrian-only streets and crosswalks. Also, It aided in planning optimal scheme that concurs with the predictable pedestrian movement.

  • The pedestrian signal systems operating presently could provide more time for the pedestrian to cross the street than the previous system, but it would increase the cycle length and cause longer delays at the signalized intersections. For instance, more than 80% of traffic signals would have to have the cycle length increased by 10sec in Daegu Metropolitan areas. Therefore. the purpose of this study is to propose a pedestrian traffic signal time that not only maintains the safety of the pedestrian but also reduces the traffic cycle length. The proposed pedestrian signal time is set to enable enough time for the elderly to cross and the flashing time is set low enough to deter the ordinary person. This new pedestrian signal time can reduce the traffic cycle length at intersections and prevent the Pedestrian crossing during flashing time. In addition to the flashing green should be changed to flashing red to warn the pedestrian he should not begin crossing as opposed to the flashing green which suggest he could cross. In this study, the speed of 1.1m/sec and 0.85m/sec are applied to the new proposed signal time for normal and elderly person respectively after analyzing data collected at Daegu Metropolitan area.

  • There are two destinations to aware the risk of common life. Recognition of the condition of pedestrian's own and the environmental factor awareness both are beneficial for risk awareness. It is good way of advancing the crime prevention effectivity that including IoT technology at the crime prevention research. The purpose of this research is that advanced way of crime prevention with multi-sensor data fusion of the condition of pedestrian and environmental factors. The 3-axis acceleration sensor is available to recognize the gait and the illumination sensor also useful to infer the road state. This research suggest a novel way of assess these factors and the result is the degree of danger.

  • The development in smartphone technology has brought convenience to the life of the mankind, but an excessive use of smartphones sometimes causes various accidents. This research tried to propose an application service 'Smombie Safe Go' UI(User Interface) that allows the prevention of such accident while using smartphones when walking. For this, after research and user observations, produced walker journey maps and derived necessary main functions needed for safety, and the result showed that transparent interface, obstacle location alert, warning of dangers functions were necessary. To make the contents of the service more detailed, hazardous situations faced during smartphone use when walking were classified into 3 situations : 1. Obstacle appearing in front, 2. traffic lights on crosswalks 3. No traffic lights on crosswalks. Scenarios by hazardous situation were written, and the flow and UI of the app service that warns its users in each situation of hazards were designed. it is predicted that 'Smombie Safe Go' may be possible to be utilized as an app service that provides a safe walking experience for not only regular pedestrians but also the blind population.

  • We propose a wearable system to help the visually impaired persons for walking safely to destination. If a user selects a destination, the system guides the user to destination with position data from GPS receiver and shortest path algorithm. At the same time, after acquiring complex spatial structures in front of the user with ultrasonic sensors, we categorize them into several predefined patterns, and determine an avoidance direction by estimating the patterns. As a result, visually impaired persons can arrive at destination safely and correctly without others help.

  • Korea's transportation paradigm is shifting from a vehicle-centered to a pedestrian-oriented society. Therefore, the interest in pedestrian safety and the improvement of pedestrian environment is also increasing. However, the level of traffic safety in Korea is still severe. It is needed to improve pedestrian safety and pedestrian environment. This study studied pedestrian-vehicle accident data provided by the Traffic Accident Analysis System(TAAS) for 2013-2015 to build a safe walking environment around school zones, and the relation between the school zones and pedestrian-vehicle traffic accidents were identified through the geographic information system(GIS) and spatial regression model. The main results are as follows. First, both road and public transportation factors are likely to increase pedestrian traffic accidents in school zones. Second, regarding land-use factors, residential, commercial, and industrial areas are found to increase pedestrian traffic crashes. On the other hand, mixed use is likely to play a role on the reduction of pedestrian traffic accidents. Finally, it has been shown that high development density also has a positive effect on pedestrian traffic accidents in school zones.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate utilization behaviors of smartphones while walking that are increasing recently and to examine the effects of smartphone usage patterns on human factors of pedestrian safety. In order to understand the motives and actual conditions of pedestrians' use of smart phones, a online questionnaire survey was conducted on people in their 20~30s who use smartphones. As a result, 98.6% of the respondents had experience using smartphones while walking. After performing the survey by extracting 17 uses the synchronization elements in the prior studies was extracted with two factors from the factor analysis. Particularly, respondents whose motivation to use smartphones was 'pandemic' were analyzed to have an influence on the risk of accident due to use of smartphones among human factors of pedestrian safety.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study is to present an analysis method to select priorities for areas where the traffic safety system is applied to reduce pedestrian accidents. Method: Using Kernel density analysis using the coordinate information of the accident point, we performed density analysis of elderly walking accidents and elderly jaywalking accidents, and analysis of the weight of two types of walking accidents. Result: As a result of density analysis of the weight considering elderly jaywalking accidents, it was analyzed that the density of pedestrian traffic accidents for th elderly was higher in Gunsan-si, Jeongeup-si, and Gimje -si compared to Jeonju-si, where the number of elderly pedestrian accidents were high. Conclusion: The analysis results of this study are judged to be possible to use objective indicators for the selection of target sites for the introduction of the traffic safety system.
