Breakdown of Boundaries Between Assistive Devices and Wearbles: An Evolutionary Case Study of Starkey Hearing Aid (장애보조기구와 스마트 웨어러블의 경계 붕괴: 스타키 보청기 사례 연구)

  • This case research investigates on how hearing aids, which is one of disability aids, is becoming a smart device, focusing on the case of Starkey Hearing Technologies(Starkey Inc.). Starkey, founded in 1967, has been a leader in innovating forms and functions of hearing aids, and has recently introduced the world's first hearing aid implemented with AI and biological sensors. In this study, history of disability aids, hearing aids(especially Starkey Inc.'s), smart wearable devices and smart earphones are compared. It has been found that recently, there has been a breakdown of boundaries between hearing aids and smart wearable devices in terms of their functions, since entertainment and life assistant functions are added to hearing aids. Based on this trend, the development model of disability aids and smart wearable devices are derived, and according social changes are discussed.

  • There is a progressive development in the medical imaging technology, especially of descriptive capability for anatomical structure of human body thanks to advancement of information technology and medical devices. But however maintenance of correct posture is essential for the medical imaging checkup on the shoulder joint requiring rotation of the upper limb due to the complexity of human body. In the cases of MRI examination, long duration and fixed posture are critical, as failure to comply with them leads to minimal possibility of reproducibility only with the efforts of the examiner and will of the patient. Thus, this study aimed to develop an auxiliary device that enables rotation of the upper limb as well as fixing it at quantitative angles for medical imaging examination capable of providing diagnostic values. An auxiliary device has been developed based on the results of precedent studies, by designing a 3D model with the CATIA software, an engineering application, and producing it with the 3D printer. The printer is Objet350 Connex from Stratasys, and acrylonitrile- butadiene-styrene(ABS) is used as the material of the device. Dimensions are $120{\times}150{\times}190mm$, with the inner diameter of the handle being 125.9 mm. The auxiliary device has 4 components including the body (outside), handle (inside), fixture terminal and the connection part. The body and handle have the gap of 2.1 mm for smooth rotation, while the 360 degree of scales have been etched on the handle so that the angle required for observation may be recorded per patient for traceability and dual examination.

  • In this study, the wastes were used as fuels for direct reduction iron (DRI) production to reduce production cost and recycle the wastes. We examined the effects of wastes on the reduction behavior of DRI manufacture and the possibility of using wastes as auxiliary fuels. The proximate and Ultimate analysis were carried out to confirm the properties of wastes as fuels, and high-quality reduced irons were fabricated by using the waste as an auxiliary fuel. The metallization of reduced irons increased as the calorific value increase of auxiliary fuel. Especially, the reduced irons fabricated from the waste tires and vinyl plastics which had high heat energy and volatile matters showed higher metallization than the others. The high calorific value and volatility of waste were significant properties as fuel. The high quality DRI could be fabricated with wastes as auxiliary fuels through optimization of reaction conditions.

고속플라이휠 에너지저장기술의 개발현황 및 전망

  • 플라이휠 에너지 저장시스템은 입력되는 잉여전기에너지를 플라이휠의 관성을 이용, 회전 운동에너지로 변환하여 저장하고 필요시 전기에너지로 순시에 출력하는 장치로 배터리와 같은 화학적 에너지 저장장치에 대비되는 기계적 에너지 저장방식 (Electro-mechanical Battery)이다. 플라이휠 시스템은 많은 에너지를 단시간에 저장하고 이를 순발적으로 활용할 수 있는 고효율, 장수명, 무공해의 청정 에너지저장/재생장치로 선진국에서는 무공해 교통수단(전기자동차 등)의 차세대 보조 동력원을 비롯한 각종 민수용, 국방용으로 응용연구가 활발히 진행되고 있다(전력저장용, 인공위성의 태양광 에너지 저장 및 자세제어용, 무소음 적진침투용 차세대 전차의 보조동력원 등). 고효율의 에너지 저장 및 재생을 위해 플라이휠 에너지 저장시스템은 크게 .고속화, 고에너지저장을 위한 복합재 플리이휠 로터.공기 마찰손실 저감용 자가 진공펌프(Self Vacuuming system).지지부 접촉마찰로 인한 에너지 손실 저감용 자기베어링/제어부.플라이휠 구동 및 발전을 위한 Motor/generator.고효율 에너지 입출력 제어부 등의 첨단기술부품으로 구성되어 있는 바, 본 논문에서는 이러한 플라이휠 에너지 저장기술의 국내외 개발현황을 소개하고 현재까지 파악된 기술적 문제점 및 향후 기술개발 전망에 대해 논하고자 한다.

Effects of the Current Probe on Ground Resistance Measurements Using Fall-of-Potential Method (전위강하법에 의한 접지저항측정에 미치는 전류보조전극의 영향)

  • In this paper, the effects of the positions of the potential and current probes on the measurements of the ground resistance and potential gradients with the fall-of-potential method are described and the testing techniques to minimize the measuring errors are proposed. The fall-of-potential method is theoretically based on the potential and current measuring principle and the measuring error is primarily caused by the position and ground resistance of the measuring probes. The ground resistance is calculated by applying the 61.8% and rule in the fall-of-potential method, and then the potential probe is located on the straight line between the grounding electrode to be measured and the current probe. However, sometimes the grounding electrode to be measured and the measuring probes in on-site test might not be arranged on the straight line with adequate distance because there are building, road block, construction and other establishments. Provided that the grounding electrode to be measured and the measuring probes ar out of position on the straight line or have inadequate distance, the measurement of the ground resistance classically falls into an error and the measured ground resistance should be corrected. Measurements were focused on the grounding electrode system made by the ground rods of 2.4m long. It was found that the suitable separation between the grounding electrode to be measured and the current probe is more than 5 times of the length of the grounding electrode to be measured.

  • In this study, we implement a YOLO driving assistance system using a model car. The YOLO is an object detection and recognition algorithm using deep running which is becoming an issue recently. The system alerts the lane departure by applying the image processing technology to the image acquired through the camera, recognizes the objects using the YOLO, and performs various functions according to the type of the object and the distance between the vehicle. the YOLO, which is superior to the existing object detection and recognition algorithm, improves the performance of the driving assist system without additional equipment. The driving assist system using the YOLO will ensure the safety of the driver with low cost.

The Evaluation of Usefulness New Assistant Device to Observe Posterior Cruciate Ligament Rupture and Patellofemoral Joint Injury in Emergency Patient (응급환자에서 후방십자인대 손상 및 슬대퇴 관절을 관찰하기 위한 보조기구 제작 및 유용성 평가)

  • This study evaluates usefulness of the developed assistant device by taking projection of patellofemoral joint in emergency patients who were doubt posterior cruciate ligament injury in knee joint. The subjects of experiment were patients who visited Eul-Ji University Hospital due to knee injury from January 2006 to December 2006. Seventeen patients, who took the Knee post stress view, Knee merchant view, Knee Seo's view to use assistant device and Knee MRI. To make assistant device of $170{\times}50{\times}70\;cm$, we evaluated its usefulness by measuring posterior dislocation of tibia. Seo's view is more accurate to make judgment of posterior cruciate ligament injury than original knee post stress view. Interval difference of posterior dislocation of original knee post stress view is $6.17{\pm}3.04$ and Seo's view is $8.74{\pm}4.47$. The results show injury of patellofemoral joint, vertical fracture of patella and posterior cruciate ligament injury by taking a projection using Seo's view. Therefore, it is useful to take projection earlier than talometer and MRI in emergency patients who were doubt posterior cruciate ligament injury in knee joint.

  • Together with the development of ubiquitous computing technology and robot technology, intelligent type robots are being utilized in many areas and the range is expected to become wider and wider. Among many service robots, the educational robots are being diversely studied in the field with the concept of r-Learning. Presently, teaching assistant robots require a lot of HRI studies prior to their practical use in the very near future and are not sufficient yet. Especially, the reactions of students based of the styles of robots (e.g. serious robot, playful robot) are very important in producing robot contents but there has been no case study on them. Therefore, in this study, the appearance of the IROBI was changed to become a teaching assistant robot and was used to test and compare elementary school students' interest, achievement and concentration depending on the styles of robot (playful, serious). The results showed that the interest was high in the group that had studied with the playful robot. The achievement however, did not show significant relations with the style of robot and that the concentration was high in the group that had studied with the serious robot.

  • 최근 센서네트워크와 같은 에너지 제한 환경을 위한 경량화 부호화 기술의 필요성이 대두됨에 따라 분산 소스 부호화 기술(Distributed Source Coding)의 응용기술로 비디오 부호화 복잡도의 대부분을 차지하는 움직임 예측/보상과정을 부호화기가 아닌 복호화기에서 수행하는 분산 비디오 부호화 기술(Distributed Video Coding)에 대한 연구가 활발히 이루어져 왔다. 이에 가장 대표적인 기술인 Wyner-Ziv 코딩 기술은 채널 코드를 이용하여 원본 프레임과 이에 대한 복호화기의 예측영상인 보조정보 사이의 잡음을 제거하여 영상을 복원한다. 일반적으로 보조정보는 원본영상에 유사한 키 프레임간의 프레임 보간을 통하여 생성되며 채널 코드는 Shannon limit에 근접한 성능을 보이는 Turbo 코드나 LDPC 코드가 사용된다. 이와 같은 채널 코드의 복호화는 채널 잡음 모델에 기반하여 수행되어지며 Wyner-Ziv 코딩 기술에서는 이 채널 잡음 모델을 '상관 잡음 모델' (Correlation Noise Modeling)이라 하고 일반적으로 Laplacian이나 Gaussian으로 모델화 한다. 하지만 복호화기에는 원본 영상에 대한 정보가 없기 때문에 정확한 상관 잡음 모델을 알 수 없으며 잡음 모델에 대한 예측의 부정확성은 잡음 제거를 위한 패리티 비트의 증가를 야기해 부호화 기술의 압축 성능 저하를 가져온다. 이에 본 논문은 원본 프레임과 보조정보 사이의 잡음을 정확하게 예측하여 잡음을 정정할 수 있는 향상된 상관 잡음 모델을 제안한다. 제안 방법은 잘못된 잡음 예측에 의해 Laplacian 계수가 너무 커지는 것을 방지하면서 영상내의 잡음의 유무에 별다른 영향을 받지 않는 새로운 문턱값을 사용한다. 다양한 영상에 대한 제안 방법의 실험 결과는 평균적으로 약 0.35dB에 해당하는 율-왜곡 성능 향상을 보여주었다.
