  • Recently, earthquakes have frequently occurred near Korean peninsula. An experimental study is needed for developing a reinforcing method for seismic strengthening to apply to RC structures. Recently, PolyUrea (PU) as structural reinforcement materials has been receiving great interest from construction industry. The reinforcing effect of PU appeared to be excellent under blast and impact as well as earthquakes. In this study, Flexible Type PolyUrea (FTPU) developed in preceding studies was modified to develop Stiff Type PolyUrea (STPU) by varying the ratio of the components of prepolymer and hardener of FTPU. The material performance evaluation has been performed through hardening time, tensile strength and percent elongation test, pull-off test, and shore hardness test. The experimental results showed that STPU has higher tensile strength and lower elongation than FTPU. Therefore, STPU coating agent can be used for semi-permanent products. By using STPU with Fiber-Reinforced Polymer (FRP) on concrete columns, confinement effect can be enhanced to maximize seismic strength and ductility.

  • This paper presents a study aimed at developing repair materials for emergency slope stabilization after disasters such as floods. The research assessed how different mix ratios of fly ash and reinforcement with basalt fibers affect the basic quality properties of mortars. Optimal amounts of fly ash were selected based on these properties, and appropriate amounts of chemical admixtures and thickeners were determined to enhance the quality attributed to the basalt fiber mixture. Notably, high-volume fly ash reduced the need for high-performance water reducers and improved workability, known benefits that also helped mitigate fiber ball issues in conjunction with the effects of thickeners. The experimental results indicated that the developed repair materials could potentially be used for emergency repairs, with a focus on initial age strength. This research aims to provide foundational data for repair materials used in future emergency slope stabilizations.

  • Required performance for repair materials are strength, ductility, durability and bonding with the substrate concrete. Various kinds of fiber-reinforced cement composites (FRCCs) have been developed and used as repair materials. Strain-hardening cement based composites (SHCC) is one of the effective repair materials that can be used to improve crack-damage tolerance of reinforced concrete (RC) structures. SHCC is a superior FRCC that has multiple cracking characteristic and pseudo strain-hardening behavior. The expansive admixture, which can be used to reduce shrinkage in SHCC materials with less workability by controlling interfacial bonding performance between SHCC and substrate concrete. For the application of SHCC as a repair material to RC structures, this study investigates the flexural performance of expansive SHCC-layered concrete beam. Test variables include the replacement levels of expansive admixture (0 and 10%), repair thickness (30 and 40 mm), and compressive strength of SHCC (30, 70 and 100 MPa). Four point bending tests on concrete beams strengthened with SHCCs were carried out to evaluate the contribution of SHCC on the flexural capacity. The result suggested that expansive SHCC materials can be used for repairing and strengthening of concrete infrastructures.

  • Corrosion and degradation of reinforced structures due to abnormal climates and natural disasters further accelerate the aging of structures. Coping with the decrease in structure performance, many old structures are being repaired and reinforced with low-weight and high-strength materials such as glass fiber composite material (GFRP). To further contribute, this paper focus on a more economical and eco-friendly material, basalt fiber composite (BFRP), which provide a more effective lateral constraint effect for seismic reinforcement. The main variables considered in this study are the curing temperature during the manufacturing of BFRP and the material characteristics of the target concrete member. The lateral constraint reinforcement effect was investigated through the evaluation of the performance of normal concrete and those with improved durability through fiber reinforcement. The reinforcement effect was 3.15 times for normal concrete and 3.72 times for fiber reinforced concrete, and the difference in reinforcement effect due to the improvement of the durability characteristics of the compression member was not significant. Lastly, the performance of the BFRP was compared with the results of the GFRP reinforcement from the previous study. The effect of the BFRP reinforcement was 1.18 times better than that of the GFRP reinforcement.

  • In general the stability of soil nail-slope system, the shear resistance is neglected because the tensile resistance of nail acts mainly for slope stabilization. This is because that deformed steel is generally used for nail and it does ductile behavior. In other side when the steel pipe with high rigidity is used for nail, the shear resistance at failure surface work more than deformed steel. In order to analyze effects of shear resistance at the soil nail-slope system with high steel piped nail, a series of numerical analyses were performed. Also numerical analyses at 3 conditions - 5 nailed, 7 nailed, 9 nailed at the same slope were perfomed for investigating the trend of shear resistance effect. From these 3D numerical analyses, it was found that the maximum shear resistances at each nails were larger in case of steel piped nail and because of this, the factor of safety at the condition of the steel piped nail appears larger than that of deformed steel nail.

  • Reinforced concrete rahmen structures has been required ductility as well as strength of beam-column joint in seismically hazard area. Some investigations have been presented for retrofitting and/or strengthening structural elements in structure. Strain-hardening cementitious composite(SHCC) has been expected excellent reinforcement performance in beam-column joint area. The properties of reinforcing fiber, as tensile strength, aspect ratio and elastic moudulus, have great effect on the fracture behavior of SHCC. The purpose of this experimental study is to evaluate structural performance of exterior reinforced concrete beam-column joint strengthened with SHCC under cyclic loading.

  • The widespread deterioration of concrete structures has required the development of new and innovative materials and technologies for strengthening and repair. Recently Fiber reinforced polymer(FRP) composites have received widespread attention as materials for the strengthening and repair of the deteriorated concrete structures. This paper presents the results of Fire-performance of RC beams strengthened with FRP-Aluminum composit hollow beams. Test results show that the higher-damaged FRP strengthened RC beams are more vulnerable to the fire and decrease the effect of FRP strenthening.

  • In this study, the nonlinear time history analysis of seismic retrofitted structures with TS damper for seven ground motion records was conducted for the purpose of verifying the seismic strengthening effect of TS seismic retrofitting method. Through comparison of the interstory drift ratio and the energy dissipation amount of the non - reinforced structure obtained and those of retrofitted structures with TS damper from the nonlinear time history analysis, the interstory drift ratio was reduced by about 30% and the amount of energy dissipation through the structure was halved. As a result, it was confirmed that the damping performance of the TS seismic retrofitting method is excellent.

  • This paper presents the experimental results of behavior of square CFT columns with large the width-ro thickness ratio strengthened with carbon fiber reinforced polymers (CFRP) sheets subjected to concentrated axial loading. The main parameters were b/t ratio and the number of CFRP layers and 6 specimens were fabricated. The values of b/t were ranged from 60 to 100. From the tests, Maximum increase of 16% was also achieved in axial-load capacity with three transverse layered CFRP applied on four sides of steel tubes. The load capacity decreased up to 41% comparing with nominal load capacity of unstrengthened CFT column. However, for CFRP strengthened CFT, the load capacity decreased up to 32%. Finally, from the load-strain relationships, the local buckling occurred before yield point of steel tubes. Also, from the load-strain relationships, it was observed that local buckling were delayed on CFT columns by CFRP sheets retrofitting.

  • In this paper, we used the electrical resistivity survey as a simple and reasonable technique to evaluate the effectiveness of grouting. And, a mechanism was also analyzed to understand how the electrical resistivity is affected by the loss of fine material in the core of a dam. From this mechanism, it was confirmed that electrical resistivity value of the damage section may be up or down depending on the survey conditions. This result seems to be contrary to the previous study that electrical resistivity of the damage zone become alway low. To clarify what was investigated, the electrical resistivity before and after grouting was compared and analyzed. As the result, it was concluded that grouting effectiveness was successfully assessed by electrical resistivity survey.
