  • The performance of underwater acoustic communication system is sensitive to the inter-symbol interference due to delay spread develop of multipath signal propagation. Thus, it is necessary technique of equalizer and channel code to eliminate inter-symbol interference. In this paper, underwater acoustic communication system were analyzed by experiment using these techniques on the Kyeong-chun lake, Munkyeong City. Based on the results of experiment, we confirmed that the performance of the proposed iterative BCJR equalization method is improved by increasing the number of iterations.

  • The reception quality of broadcasting in car radio system may become poor due to the noise such as week signal strength, multipath, Adjacent Channel and so on. To improve this, some european nations and U.S. serve RDS(Radio Data System) on FM radio. AF(Alternative Frequency) and PI(Programme Identification) code contained information in RDS data are used to switch to the broadcasting having the best reception quality. There are many techniques and studies of maintaining the best reception quality. But many previous techniques are no longer the best way because RF chips are improved every year and noise components can be distinguished in detail. So this research will suggest the best switching technique to maintain the best reception quality.

  • This paper proposes a new predistortion linearizer to compensate for AM/AM and AM/PM in the nonlinear characteristics of amplifier. This consists of common-emitter amplifier and schottky diode that is connected between emitter and ground. When effective resistance of the schottky diode with bias condition varies, common-emitter amplifier with series feedback has a increase of amplitude and expansion of phase. This makes a amplifier nonlinear characteristics are to be improved. The proposed linearizer and amplifier has been manufactured and tested to operate in cellular base station frequency (869~894MHz). The test results show that third order intermodulation distortion (IMD3) cab be removed by more than 10.4dB in case of CW 2-tone signals ${\Delta}f$=1MHz, and the adjacent channel power ratio (ACPR) also can be improved by more than 9.6dB for CDMA IS-95 1FA signals.

  • 40Gbps WDMSystems have been studied by numerical simulation to optimize their performance. Standard single mode fiber is assumed, and the most popular modulation format, NRZ, is used for the study. These assumptions are valid when existing WDM systems are required to upgrade their performance to 40Gbps. It is shown that the standard single mode fiber can transmit optical signals over 4800 (BER < 10-15) by optimizing optical and electrical filter characteristics at the receiver and by compensation of dispersion. In addition, when the system performance is mainly limited by ASE noise of EDFAs, it is found that flattop-shaped optical filter at the receiver gives a better result than Gaussian-shaped filter unless the insertion loss of the optical filter is larger than 5dB.

  • The optimum kernel size for error-distribution estimation with given error samples cannot be used in the weight adjustment of minimum Euclidean distance between error distributions (MED) algorithms. In this paper, a new adaptive kernel estimation method for convergence enhancement of MED algorithms is proposed. The proposed method uses the average rate of change in error power with respect to a small interval of the kernel width for weight adjustment of the MED learning algorithm. The proposed kernel adjustment method is applied to experiments in communication channel compensation, and performance improvement is demonstrated. Unlike the conventional method yielding a very small kernel calculated through optimum estimation of error distribution, the proposed method converges to an appropriate kernel size for weight adjustment of the MED algorithm. The experimental results confirm that the proposed kernel estimation method for MED can be considered a method that can solve the sensitivity problem from choosing an appropriate kernel size for the MED algorithm.

  • In underwater communications, to compensate performance degradation induced from rapidly changing channel transfer characteristic, multi-band communication method which allocate the same data to different frequency bands is used. However, the multi-band configuration may have worse performance than the single-band one because performance degradation in a particular band affects the output from the entire bands. This problem can be solved through a receiving end that analyzes error rates of each band, sets threshold values and allocates lower weights to inferior bands. Therefore, this paper proposed a weighting algorithm based on estimated Bit Error Rate (BER) which analyzes reliability of received data based on the performance difference between demodulated and decoded data. Employing turbo codes with coding rate of 1/3, we evaluate the performance of the proposed weighted multi-band transmission model in real underwater environments based on optimal simulation parameters. Through the sea trial experiment, we confirmed error performance was improved by applying the proposed weighting algorithm.

  • The performance of underwater acoustic communication is greatly affected by multipath propagation and Doppler spread. This paper proposes a new communication technique, the Triangle Spread Carrier (TSC) technique, by modifying the existing Sweep Spread Carrier (SSC) technique that is strong in a multipath propagation environment. The proposed TSC technique is a form in which the up-chirp and down-chirp signals have repeated carriers, and each correlation function characteristic is used to estimate and correct the Doppler shift frequency of the receiving signal. To demonstrate the performance of the proposed TSC technique, we present the results of simulations using underwater channel simulators and sea trial conducted in the East Sea. When demodulating using only the estimated Doppler shift frequency as a result of the sea trial, the uncoded bit error rate was up to 0.194, but when the proposed method was applied, the uncoded bit error rate was reduced to 0.001.

  • We propose to implement cost-effectively a high-speed short-haul interconnect by transmitting a 200-Gb/s/λ two-channel optical time-division-multiplexed signal generated by a carrier-suppressed optical pulse, which improves the robustness of the multiplexed signal to chromatic dispersion. The multiplexed 200-Gb/s signal is generated in the transmitter by combining two 100-Gb/s 4-level pulse-amplitude-modulated signals (generated using the optical pulse and two Mach-Zehnder modulators). After the signal is transmitted over a fiber, it is amplified by a semiconductor optical amplifier and detected by a photodiode. The amplified spontaneous emission noise is eliminated by an optical band-pass filter. The transmitted signal is reconstructed by a 2 × 2 multiple-input multiple-output equalizer, which compensates for crosstalk. Due to the use of the carrier-suppressed optical pulse, the 200-Gb/s signal can be transmitted over fiber with a chromatic dispersion of 40 ps/nm.

  • The major factor that disturbs practical use of speech recognition is distortion by the ambient and channel noises. Generally, the ambient noise drops the performance and restricts places to use. DSR (Distributed Speech Recognition) based speech recognition also has this problem. Various noise cancelling algorithms are applied to solve this problem, but loss of spectrum and remaining noise by incorrect noise estimation at low SNR environments cause drop of recognition rate. This paper proposes methods for speech enhancement. This method uses MMSE-STSA for noise cancelling and ideal binary mask to compensate damaged spectrum. According to experiments at noisy environment (SNR 15 dB ~ 0 dB), the proposed methods showed better spectral results and recognition performance.
