  • Rock Bolt generally utilizes deformed reinforcing bar welded from structural steel of which strength is higher than required for making advantageous use of the support function of ground. In the condition with highly corrosive underground water, however, problem frequently occurs on tunnel and slope stabilization in terms of repair, rehabilitation and maintenance issues due to the destruction of Rock Bolt by corrosion of steel. A structural performance evaluation for GFRP Rock Bolt was conducted for the purpose of resolving the foregoing problem and at the same time developing a permanently-usable support material. This study intended to evaluate the safety factor of GFRP Rock Bolt by implementing the slope stability interpretation via structural analysis on the basis of its structural characteristics derived from both tensile force function test and shear force function test. It is judged based on the results that GFRP Rock Bolt would secure sufficient ground stability as an alternative material for existing Steel Rock Bolt.

  • PHC-W earth retaining wall could be constructed continuously. Various retaining wall methods such as C.I.P. etc. method require separate waterproof method. However, the PHC-W retaining wall method prevents leakage of groundwater by inserting a waterproofing material at connection part between 2 PHC piles. In this study, the experimental study on 3 waterproofing method for PHC-W retaining wall was conducted at the model pressure chamber. In the method using textile with 1-liquid type and 2-liquid type urethane, rapid leak occurred at the pressure of 120 kPa and 140 kPa or more. In the method of textile with grouting, rapid leak occurred at the pressure of 120 kPa or more, however, in this method, the rapid leakage happened at the top part and the bottom part reinforced with urethane.

  • In this study, Generally sandbag was used to reinforce slope or restore levee by using the in-situ material. To increase shear strength of sandbag, the Velcro system was effective for geosynthetic interface and make up for the weakness of shear strength between sandbag to sandbag. In this study, shear properties of geosynthetic-geosynthetic and geosynthetic-soil were evaluated from large scale direct shear tests. The cohesion and the angle of internal friction of each interface was evaluated. And laboratory model tests were performed to compare strength of reinforcement with strength of none reinforcement. As a result of this study, the cohesion and the angle of internal friction of each interface was increased, especially the cohesion was increased more than the angle of internal friction. Also according to the result of model test, the bearing capacity was increased by 20%.

  • The steel pipe of steel-concrete composite piles increases the pile strength and induces the ductile failure by constraining the deformation of the inner concrete. In this research, the load-movement relations and the reinforcement effect by the outer steel pipe in the steel-concrete composite pile were analyzed by performing three-dimensional numerical analyses, which can simulate the yielding behavior of the pile material and the elasto-plastic behavior of soils. The parameters analyzed in the study include three pile materials of steel, concrete and composite, pile diameter and loading direction. As the results, the axial capacity of the composite pile was 1.9 times larger than that of the steel pipe pile and similar with that of the concrete pile. At the allowable movement criteria, the horizontal capacity of the composite pile was 1.46 times larger than that of the steel pile and 1.25 times larger than that of the concrete pile. In addition, the horizontal movement at the pile head of the composite pile was about 78% of that of the steel pile and about 53% of that of the concrete pile, which showed that the movement reduction effect of the composite pile was significant and enables the economical design of drilled shafts.

  • A new grouting material named 3S is developed that can be used effectively for reinforcing cut surface of weathered rock in processing of tunneling. The new material is composed of mostly micro slag cement and general Portland cement, but the material is foundered again upto $8,000\;cm^2/g$ of specific area so that it can be easily infiltrated in to the ground. For verifying technical and engineering quality of the material several laboratory tests with specially designed test apparatus were performed including compression tests, infiltration tests and resonant column tests. It was verified that the newly developed grouting material at early age of 1 or 3 days generates 200~1500% higher compressive strength and 400~560% larger elastic modulus than those of the LW(LW-1) or micro-cement(LW-2) grouting materials in the market. In addition, the new 3S grouting material could be so easily infiltrated into the model ground in the lab tests that it produces 4 times larger grouted roots in average compared to the usual water glass type grouting material(LW-1). Thus, it can be said that the newly developed grouting material can effectively prevent inflow water into tunnel compared to LW grouting materials.

  • Geosynthetic reinforced soil (GRS) walls have been increasingly applied recently due to its numerous geotechnical engineering applications. However failure occurs in some cases of constructed GRS walls. These GRS wall failures are mostly due to the unpredictable characteristics of intensive rainfall. Hence, the need for new and innovative ideas for rehabilitation methods has been getting attention. This paper introduces a case study for the design and restoration method of collapsed GRS wall using Limit equilibrium and Numerical Analyses. Restoration method includes: (1) soil nailing without backfill excavation and (2) reconstruction with GRS wall after collapsed backfill excavation. Analyses results show minimal horizontal displacements and shear strain on the reinforced concrete facing for the restoration case with soil nailing. On the other hand, horizontal displacements are developed in the middle of the mortar block facing and shear strains are developed at the bottom facing with spiral curves for the reconstructed GRS wall after collapsed backfill excavation. Therefore, the collapsed GRS wall was restored with the soil nailing without backfill excavation and its construction procedures are discussed in this paper.

  • In this research, post grouting methods were applied on PHC piles, and static load tests were conducted to confirm the effect of post grouting on bearing capacity enhancement of PHC piles. Grouting pressures of 1.9 MPa and 3.5 MPa were applied, and bearing capacities of grouted piles were compared with that of non-grouted pile. From the static load test results, the bearing capacities of grouted piles were about 3 times higher than that of non-grouted pile. In addition, the design efficiency (allowable bearing capacity/nominal bearing capacity) increased from 32% to 97% after post grouting, and the axial stiffness of piles also increased by about 1.3 times per grouting pressure.

  • For permanent anchors used for slope reinforcement, bearing capacity and durability should be secured during the period of use. However, according to recent domestic and foreign studies, phenomena such as tension fractures, damage to anchorages, deformation and damage to slope and reduction of residual load over time have been reported along the long-term behavior of the anchors. These problems are expected to increase in the future, which will inevitably lead to problems such as increasing maintenance costs and relevant facility collapse. It is necessary to improve maintenance procedures and methods of ground anchors more practically. In this study, the problems and limitations of domestic maintenance methods were analyzed by conducting a literature study, and the measurement data of load cells installed on the install ground anchors were analyzed to determine the change in the residual load with regard to the elapsed date of the anchors. Based on the results, the effect of the construction conditions of anchors and the soil compositions on the increase and decrease of load were identified.

  • The construction of subsea tunnel differs from that of inland tunnel because of high water pressure due to sea water level and difficulties to reinforce the ground under construction. Therefore, it is very important to prevent trouble in advance when the subsea tunnel is constructed. In this paper, we established lots of databases about characteristics of geological and mechanical parameters on the construction of subsea tunnel using micro slurry TBM which depth is about 60 m. The correlation analysis is conducted to confirm the effect of thrust, torque and RPM among the excavation database on the net penetration rate. Also, An empirical formula is suggested to predict the net penetration rate through the correlation analysis between FPI (Field Penetration Index) and specific energy from the subsea tunnel excavation database.
