  • The main objective of this study is to investigate the effect of metal z-pinning on the failure behavior of cocured composite single-lap joints. Three different pin diameters (0.3, 0.5, and 0.7 mm) and three pin areal densities (0.5, 2.0, and 4.0%) were examined. The specimens were fabricated by T700-12K-31E#2510 unidirectional prepreg from Toray. Stainless steel pins were used for z-pinning. Test results showed that except one case with extremely low pin density of 0.5%, all other z-pinned joints exhibited lower initial crack stresses than those of the unpinned joint. However the ultimate strength of the z-pinned joint increased up to 45% at most. Furthermore, even after the complete failure of the joint, the z-pins sustained the carried load to a certain degree experiencing large deformation and provided the stable fracture behavior for the composite joint.

  • This work presents an active vibration control of a stiffened hull structure using a flexible macro fiber composite (MFC) actuator. As first step, the governing equation of the hull structure is derived in a matrix form and its dynamic characteristics such as natural frequency are obtained via a finite element analysis (FEA). The natural frequencies obtained from the FEA are compared with those determined from experimental measurement. After formulating the control model in a state space representation, an optimal controller is designed in order to attenuate the vibration of the stiffened hull structure. The controller is then empirically realized through dSPACE and control responses are evaluated in time domain.

  • The use of advanced composite materials in strengthening and repair of existing structures is increasing rapidly. This paper describes an effectiveness of a bonding of carbon fiber reinforced sheets to corroded steel members for the repair. Three types of surface treatment, what we call cleaning, of corroded plate are chosen as parameters. They are "without cleaning","removal of painting by brushing" and "complete removal of painting". From the experimental study, the following findings are obtained. 1) When the steel plate is subjected to tensile force, carbon fiber sheets adhered to the painted steel gives a higher strength against peeling compared to that of the plate without painting, 2) The grade of surface treatment, or cleaning of the corroded steel plate affects the strengthening effect.

  • From the result of this research above, it may be summed up as follows. As a summary of results from each experiment, as the test body reinforced with the carbon rods was embedded inside the concrete section and made it possible uniform movement, this study has shown that it had excellent characteristics in improving the flexural strength and ductility. Also, it was considered as the carbon-steel sheet composite plate was to exert the strength more if it would complement the adherence with the concrete.

  • This paper studied the AE(acoustic emission) characteristics of the laminated composite structures. The composite stiffened panels under the compressive loading emitted various AE signals when they buckled or changed the buckling modes. In addition, the failure initiated and propagation generated a lot of complex signals. From the continuous signal generation. we identified when the failures initiated and whether they propagated or not. The single lap joint of laminated plates under tensional load also generated AE signals when bonding region failed. The first failure occurrence and its propagation are monitored by generated AE signals. The characteristics of AE signals used in this analysis are cumulative hits, hit distribution, peak frequency of generated AE waveform and amplitude of signals. The analysis of AE signals shows that continuous increment of cumulative hits can be regarded as damage propagation and three dominant peak frequencies can correspond to typical failure modes in the laminated composites.

  • FRP (Fiber Reinforced Polymer) tendons can be used as an alternative to solve the corrosion problem of steel tendons. Material properties of FRP tendons-bond strength, transfer length, development length-must be determined in order to apply to concrete structures. First of all, in case of application for pretension concrete members with CFRP tendons, transfer length is an important characteristic. The bond of the material characteristics should be demanded clearly to apply to PSC structures prestressed with FRP tendons. This paper investigated on the bond characteristics of FRP reinforcements with various surface-type. To determine the bond characteristics of FRP materials used in place of steel reinforcement or prestressing tendon in concrete, pull-out testing suggested by CAN/CSA S806-02 was performed. A total of 40 specimens were made of concrete cube with steel strands, deformed steel bar and 6 different surface shape FRP materials like carbon or E-glass. Results of the bonding tests presented that each specimen showed various behaviors as the bond stress-slip curve and compared with the bond characteristic of CFRP tendon developed in Korea.

  • The synthetic fibers including Polyvinyl alcohol and Polyethylene fibers have been successfully used in the manufacture of high ductile fiber reinforced cementitious composites. Polypropylene (PP) fiber has also been used in composites, not for the purpose of achieving a high level of tensile ductility but to improve the fire resistance performance of concrete exposed to high temperatures. This paper discusses the method for enhancing the performance of composites supplemented with PP fiber. Five types of mixture proportions were designed with high volume fly ash for testing the performance of composites. Type I cement and fly ash F were used as binding materials. The water-to-binder ratio was 0.23~0.25, and the amount of PP fiber used was 2 vol%. Polystyrene bead were also used to increase the tensile ductility of composites. A series of experiments including slump, density, compression and uniaxial tension tests were performed to evaluate the performance of cementitious composites supplemented with PP fiber. From the test results, it was exhibited that the performance of composites supplemented with PP fiber can be enhanced by adopting the mechanics and statistics theory.

  • Metal matrix composites have been extensively studied because of their excellent characteristics for structural application. $Al_2O_3$ and SiC have been used as a common reinforcement owing to their good mechanical properties. However the manufacturing cost of these ceramic reinforcement is expensive, so the use of the composites has been restricted to special purposes. In this study, we tested the application possibility as a reinforcement of $Al_2O_3$-TiC powder synthesized by SHS(Self-propagating High-temperature Synthesis) process to Al alloy matrix composite. Also, $Al_2O_3$ short fibers were added with the synthesized powders in order to apply to the Al matrix hybrid composites. Squeeze infiltration casting process was used to make the composite with 25vol% of reinforcement. Microstructure and crystal structure were examined by SEM, OM and XRD, also the mechanical properties were studied by the compressive test and wear test.

  • In order to develop composite fiber panels that can maximize the protection and blast resistance of the existing structures by improving lightweight, high-strength and fireproof performances of the single layer material of precast panels, the basic properties of the inner and outer covers that are mixed with aramid fibers (AF) and polyester fibers (PF) were evaluated in this study. Also, a basic study was performed on the performance of composite fiber panels by testing Nano-sized composite materials that are lightweight and excellent in fire resistance for their compressive strength, bending strength and tensile strength.
