  • The types of responses which are generally measured in the modal testing are displacement, velocity or acceleration. In strain modal testing, however, strain responses subject to excitation forces are measured. In this paper, the characteristics of strain modal testing are investigated experimentally. Investigated are the effects of frequency range, excitation force level, and excitation signal on the quality of measured strain frequency response functions. It has been shown that a strain FRF at a point can be predicted from displacement FRFs and strain FRFs at other points.

  • This paper proposed a nonlocal anisotropic damage model to simulate the behavior of plain and reinforced concrete structures that are predominantly tensile and compressive load. This model based on continuum damage mechanics, used a symmetric second-order tensor as the damage variable. For quasi-brittle materials, such as concrete, the damage patterns were different in tension and in compression. These two damage states were modeled by damage evolution laws ensuring a damage tensor rate proportional to the total strain tensor in terms of principal components. To investigate the effectiveness of proposed model, the double edge notched specimen experimented by nooru-mohamed and reinforced concrete bending beam were analyzed using the implementation of the proposed model. As the results for the simulation, the nonlocal anisotropic damage model with an adequate control of rupture correctly represented the crack propagation for mixed mode fracture. In the structural failure of reinforced concrete bending beam, the proposed model can be showed up to a very high damage level and yielding of the reinforcements.

  • In this paper, the experimental study and finite elements analysis were conducted on homogeneous and dissimilar metals single lap-shear bonded joints to investigate the factor that affect the joint failure load. It was found that factors which have the significant effects on the failure load of the joint was stiffness of the adherends. And from experimental results, it can be confirmed that the failure load increases linearly with overlap length increases. And the failure load of dissimilar metal joints is approximately 1KN(10~17%) larger than homogeneous metal joints. In order to confirm this phenomenon, the stress distribution and strain distribution of the specimens were analyzed through the finite element analysis. The difference between homogeneous metals joints and dissimilar metals joints is that stress and strain in adhesive are concentrated at the end of the overlap zone close to aluminium which has lower rigidity than aluminium in case of dissimilar metals joints. From high rigidity of steel, the stress concentration in bonds are decreased and it cause increase of the failure strength at dissimilar metal joints.

  • An aluminum foil-laminated sheet is a laminated steel sheet on which aluminum foil is adhesively bonded. It is usually used on the outer panel of home appliances to provide an aluminum feeling and appearance on the surface of the product. The delamination of aluminum foil is one of the main problems during the stretch forming process. The purpose of this study is was to determine the delamination limit of an aluminum foil-laminated sheet in the stretch forming process. The delamination was dependent on the bonding strength between aluminum foil and steel sheet. The fracture behavior of the interface between the aluminum foil and the steel sheet was described by a cohesive zone model. A finite element was conducted with the cohesive zone model to analyze the relationship between the delamination limit and the bonding strength of the interface. The interface bonding strength was evaluated by lap shear and T-peel test. The delamination limit of the aluminum foil-laminated sheet was determined by using the bonding strength of the steel sheet. The delamination limit was also verified by the Erichsen test.

  • An experimental study has been conducted to evaluate the effects of average and cyclic shear stresses on the undrained failure behaviors of dense marine silty sand by using the Cyclic Direct Simple Shear apparatus. The results show that when the average shear stress ratio is zero, symmetric cyclic shear deformation is the major component of deformation, and permanent shear deformation is relatively small. On the other hand, when the average shear stress ratio is larger than zero, asymmetric permanent shear deformation is the major component, and cyclic shear deformation does not change much as the number of cyclic loads increases. The average shear stress ratio has less effects on the number of cyclic loads needed to fail, as compared with the cyclic shear stress ratio. The proposed stress-dependent failure contour can effectively be used to assess the cyclic shear strength of soil beneath the foundation for the design of offshore structures.

  • Agricultural tractors are utilized on rough road such as rice paddy field. Therefore, static and dynamic load should be considered when simulating structural analysis with finite element analysis (FEA). But it consumes a lot of time and effort to measure dynamic load because of difficulty and complexity in modeling various field working load conditions and kinematics of machinery. In this paper, to reduce the efforts, 4-post road simulator is developed for agricultural tractor like modeling commercial vehicle. In proving ground test in our facility, I measured acceleration of front/rare axle and strain of body frame to validate input loads. The acceleration is used for defining input loads. And strain is validated with dynamics analysis including mode superposition method. As a result, I was able to calculate 4-post input road profiles, which represent similar proving ground profile with good reliability.

  • The dynamic vehicle running tests were performed to analyze dynamic behavioral characteristics such as displacement, strain history loop and vibration acceleration in arch bridges. Also, the validity of the modeling was verified by comparing the results of the tests and those of the structural analysis modeling. With the resonance revision of verified modeling, when the ratio of excited frequencies to natural frequencies exceeds ${1{\pm}0.04}$, the stability of the bridge is obtained. Also, in the event of resonance by speed parameter, the second mode shape is dominant to the dynamic behaviors of arch bridges. It is found that manipulating the parameters involving arch ribs can increase the second mode natural frequency. It makes critical velocity greater than operational velocities to guarantee the stability of arch bridges.

  • The steel-plate concrete composite beam is composed of a steel plate, concrete and a shear connector to combine the two inhomogeneous materials. In general, the steel plate is assembled by welding an existing composite beam. In this study, a new steel-plate concrete composite (SPCC) beam was developed to reduce the size of the shear connector and improve its workability. The SPCC beam was composed of folded steel plates and concrete, without any shear connector. The folded steel plate was assembled with high strength bolts instead of welding. To improve the workability in field construction, a hat-shaped cap was attached in the junction with the slab. Monotonic two-point load testing was conducted under displacement control mode. The flexural strength of the SPCC beam specimen was calculated to be 76% of that of the complete composite beam by using the plastic stress distribution method and strain compatibility method. The cap acted as the stud and accessory. The synthesis rate could be increased by controlling the gap of the cap, and the bending performance could be evaluated by using the strain fitting method considering the synthesis rate of the SPCC beam.

  • Fatigue tests were conducted on the aluminum alloy, A7075-T6 to determine the most reliable fretting fatigue damage parameter. Specimens with grooves were used, so that either fretting fatigue crack at the pad/specimen interface or plain fatigue crack at the groove could be nucleated, depending on the pad pressure. Both the crack nucleation location and initial crack orientation were examined using optical microscopy, and the results were used to assess the reliability of the various fretting fatigue damage parameters that have been most commonly used in the literature. Finite element analysis was employed to obtain the stress and strain data of the specimen, which were needed to estimate the parameter values and the orientation of the critical plane. It was revealed that both the Fatemi.Socie and McDiarmid parameters, which assume shear-mode fatigue cracking, are the most reliable.

  • This study presents a way to validate the quality level of the proposed connection type and verify the experimental test, and performs a 3D nonlinear analysis corresponding to the experimental test. Two mixed-structure beams were cast and tested under a four-point static loading. Force-displacement relation, force-strain relation, force-opening width, and failure mode were observed from comparing the numerical results of the adopted FE model. Nonlinear analysis of mixed structures was carried out by utilizing the contact elements of a general purpose structural analysis computer program (ABAQUS). The results of numerical and experimental simulation show that the proposed L-shaped connection has greater stiffness under flexural loading and better structural performance with regard to the connection.
