Objectives: The aim of this study was to develop a Phlegm Pattern Questionnaire for Functional Dyspepsia (PPQ-FD) by modifying a previously developed Phlegm Pattern Questionnaire (PPQ) and to verify its reliability and validity. Further objectives were to obtain the optimal cut-off value for the PPQ-FD for standardization and for clinical use. Methods: The PPQ-FD was developed by extracting the major symptoms of the phlegm pattern in functional dyspepsia and by using the Delphi method to administer a requested importance survey to experts. The reliability, validity, and optimal cut-off value of the PPQ-FD were analyzed by enrolling a total of 60 subjects in this study. Thirty patients were diagnosed with both functional dyspepsia and phlegm pattern and thirty patients were diagnosed with only functional dyspepsia. All participants were requested to fill out the PPQ-FD. Results: No statistically significant differences were detected in the two groups for sex distribution, age, or body mass index. Five of the survey questions negatively affected its reliability; therefore, we decided to exclude those five questions on further inspection. The Cronbach's α coefficient of the revised PPQ-FD was 0.853, and clinical validity was verified. Construct validity was analyzed by factor analysis and identified four factors. Statistically significant positive correlations were found between the revised PPQ-FD and other dyspepsia scales, such as the SQDQ, SSQD, VAS, NDI-K, and FD-QoL scales. The VAS had particularly strong positive correlations with the PPQ-FD. Conclusions: The PPQ-FD developed in this study has fundamental reliability and validity for use as a pattern-diagnosis questionnaire. The PPQ-FD can help to diagnose the phlegm pattern in patients with functional dyspepsia.

Acupuncture and herbal treatment are based on diagnosis of cold and heat pattern in Traditional Korean Medicine. This diagnosis is accomplished through pulse, tongue and question examination, which are not objective. Quantification and objectification of this diagnosis process are required for efficacious treatment and traditional medicine development. In this study, we developed the cold-heat pattern questionnaire for this purpose. Seventy nine patients who visited oriental medical hospital were included in this study. The cold-heat pattern questionnaire was composed of many questions about patient's physical condition, which were derived from The Traditional Oriental Medical Literature with Delphi Technique. Patients filled out the cold-heat pattern questionnaire by themselves. Diagnosis of cold and heat pattern are conducted separately by oriental medical doctors with more than 5 years' clinical experience. Various physical condition factors were derived for the cold-heat pattern questionnaire. (Preference temperature, Body temperature, Pain type, Face color, Urine, Stool and secretion features) Each cold and heat symptoms group acquired internal consistency. (Cronbach's ${\alpha}$ : Cold - 0.605, Heat - 0.722) There were significant associations between doctor's diagnosis and cold symptoms in 'Aversion to cold', 'Desire for heat', 'Pale face', 'Loose stools'. (p-value < 0.05) There were significant associations between doctor's diagnosis and heat symptoms in 'Desire for cold', 'Body feverishness', 'Thirst'. (p-value < 0.05) The internal consistency results suggest that the cold-heat pattern questionnaire assured reliability. Besides, these results showed that cold-heat symptoms are apt to appear together with, and this can be indirect evidence that diagnosis of cold-heat pattern is valuable for comprehension about disease pattern. Moreover, respective symptoms of cold-heat pattern showed different significance with doctor's diagnosis. Consequently these significant symptoms can be more considered for comprehension of cold-heat pattern.

Objectives : As depression falls into the category of Wuljeung, Gamiguibi-Tang(Jiaweiguipitang) is the standard prescription to cure Wuljeung. This study develops a questionnaire for building the guidelines to administer Gamiguibi-Tang to depression and evaluates reliability and validity of questionnaire. Methods : With extracting the text related to depression and Gamiguibi-Tang through total 9 Korean medicine books and consulting the experts, the study selected 80 items and converted them into a questionnaire. It surveyed the neuropsychiatry professors and the medical specialists three times by Delphi method, and lastly selected 21 final items of a questionnaire. On the basis of the questionnaire, it collected total 216 samples and tested their reliability and validity. Results : 21 items all didn't reduce total Cronbach alpha coefficient and satisfied test-retest reliability. As a result of factor analysis, totally 5 factors were extracted such as mental state, sleep, accompaniment, fatigue and weakness. Finally, in comparing a depression group with a normal control group, two groups all showed meaningful difference in each 21 items' point, the sum of factor 1 to 5 items' points, and the sum of 21 items' points. Conclusions : The questionnaire on the updated depression prescription guideline of Gamiguibi-Tang satisfied both of reliability and validity. Later it can help objectifying to apply Gamiguibi-Tang to depression cure.
Objectives : We presented the results of reliability study in advance, and analyzed agreement between Korean medicine doctors(KMDs)' diagnosis and cold-heat pattern identification questionnaire(CHPI)'s diagnosis. Methods : This survey was conducted from May 16 to 17, 2015. The subjects were 93 adults living in rural society. Diagnosis of CHPI was performed by 2 KMDs who have clinical experience more than 5 years. The KMDs' diagnosis was set as a reference index, and then we compare 23 items(cold pattern 11 items and heat pattern 12 items) of CHPI questionnaire and 15 items(cold pattern 8 items and heat pattern 7 items) that were brief form of it. We had cut-off value by standard of KMDs' diagnosis using receiver operating characteristic-curve(ROC-curve), with which we calculated agreement including kappa value. Correlation analysis between CHPI evaluation score by KMDs and by the questionnaire was fulfilled as well. Results : Agreement about 11 and 8 cold pattern items showed 87.1% together, and the value of kappa each recorded 0.742 and 0.741. Agreement about 12 and 7 heat pattern items suggested 81.7% and 78.5%, and the value of kappa showed 0.634 and 0.570. Correlation coefficients were 0.803 of 11 items and 0.761 of 8 items about cold pattern. In addition, correlation coefficients were 0.789 of 12 items and 0.767 of 7 items about heat pattern. The significant probability (p-value) was under 0.001. Conclusions : We have developed CHPI questionnaire involving reliability and agreement based on usual symptoms, and hope additional complements so that Korean medicine diagnostics and Korean preventive medicine would be improved.

The study was performed to determine the reliability and validity of the 'Qi Blood Yin Yang Deficiency Questionnaire (Qi Blood Yin Yang DQ)' for the 100 subjects with chronic fatigue. After 100 subjects respond to the 'Qi Blood Yin Yang DQ', Korean medical doctor classified the subjects into 4 groups such as Qi deficiency group, Blood deficiency group, Yin deficiency group and Yang deficiency group. 100 subjects were retested in the same way after 3 weeks. The reliability and the validity of the questionnaire were inspected. Internal consistency of the 'Qi Blood Yin Yang DQ' was excellent (Cronbach alpha 0.916). Test-retest reliability was good (intra-class correlation coefficient 0.699). Construct validity analyzed by exploratory factor analysis produced 4 factors, which were selected from eigenvalues that are greater than 1.0. The 'Qi Blood Yin Yang DQ' consisted of 4 factors. The factor 1, 2, 3 and 4 showed 'Qi deficiency', 'Yin deficiency', 'Yang deficiency' and 'Blood deficiency' respectively. The 'Qi Blood Yin Yang DQ' restructured in this study may provide a fundamental questionnaire and a further study is required for a more advanced, standardized and statistically proven questionnaire.

The aim of this study was to identify the reliability and the validity of Five Organs Questionnaire (FOQ). In this study, 335 data was collected from early adulthood of A-city, D-city and C-city in South Korea from Dec. 2016 to Jan. 2017, and the collected data was analyzed with SPSS 23.0 software. The result showed that the Cronbach's ${\alpha}$ of five organs was 0.775-0.853. The reliabilities of test and retest Intra Correlation Coefficient (ICC) for the five organs were .891-.929 in pattern identification and .874-.930 in functional evaluation, respectively. Each organ was divided by two factors, and the factor loadings of Liver, Heart, Spleen, Lung and Kidney were 52.973%, 54.534%, 57.060%, 53.803%, and 46.337%, respectively. The functional evaluation of five organs was associated with self-rated health status as r was -.443 to -.583(p<.001), and quality of life as r was -.5.17 to -.716(p<.001), respectively. The test-retest diagnostic agreement was 67.2% and Kappa was 0.562. This study revealed that FOQ is a reliable and valid questionnaire.
Objectives : Based on the analysis of Yin-Yang[음양] characteristics and symptoms, each person is classified into Yin-Yang. Also the validity of the result is statistically analized. Methods : From Feb. to May. 2003, the data were collected through a questionnaire given to 690 patients. The questionnaire was composed of 34 items which were about personality, habit, sweat, response to coldness, thirst, bowel, urine, physical shape, and menstruation for women only. SD(Semantic Differential Technique) used for each item, each item is measured as a contrast of two opposite symptoms. Reliability analysis was used to select items and categories. Based on means of items in each category the Yin-Yang index was developed. The validity of Yin-Yang index was investigated using classification and clustering analysis. In statistical analysis, SPSS V10.0.7 PC was used. Results : The obtained results are summarized as follows: 1) We constructed Yin-Yang index based on the middle point of the sum of categorical means. Then we classified each person into Yin or Yang. 2) To investigate the validity of the distribution of personal Yin-Yang degree, the crosstabulation of results from clustering and classification was used. The hit ratio for classification was much higher than Maximum Chance Criterion($C_{max}$), and concurrence in crosstabulation was successful. Therefore we can infer that the distribution of Yin-Yang was valid. Conclusions : Based on Yin-Yang characteristics and symptoms, we was analyzed personal degree of Yin-Yang, and confirmed the validity of its distribution. Therefore this index can be used further for Bian-Zheng [변증] and classification of the constitution.
