  • In this paper, to verify the field application of a displacement estimation technique based on the relationship between displacement and strain, static and dynamic field load test are performed on three-span continuous real bridge structures. The superstructure types of the test bridges are IPC girder highway bridge and steel box girder AGT bridge. LVDTs and strain gauges are attached to them; then, the responses due to test vehicle are measured. To obtain the displacement-strain relationship of the test bridges, the bridges are modeled as grillage system with 6 DOFs for the purpose of structural analyses. Static and dynamic displacements, which are estimated using both the calculated displacement-strain relationship and the measured strain signal, agree well with the values measured by LVDT. This study demonstrates that the displacement estimation technique using the strain signal can be effectively applied to the displacement measurement of bridge structures that cross rivers/roads/railways or have high clearance.

  • In order to improve the quality of strain images in medical ultrasound imaging, displacements need to be accurately estimated. In this paper, in order to apply one-dimensional displacement estimation methods to two-dimensional motion estimation, the axial and lateral displacements are separately estimated. In order to estimate lateral displacements, one-dimensional signals aligned in the lateral direction are converted to analytic signals, which are then crosscorrelated. Strain images are produced by first compensating two-dimensional displacements for lateral motion with lateral motion displacement estimates obtained from the proposed lateral displacement estimation algorithm and then estimating axial displacements. Both phantom and human data experiments show that the proposed method provides better signal-to-noise ratio and contrast-to-noise ratio characteristics than a conventional strain imaging method that utilizes axial displacement estimates only.

  • A method to predict the strain responses from the measurements of displacement responses is considered. The method uses a transformation matrix which is composed of a displacement modal matrix and a strain modal matrix. The method can predict strains at points where displacements are not measured as well as at displacement measuring points. One of the drawbacks of the strain prediction method is that the displacement responses must be measured at many points on a structure simultaneously. This difficulty can be overcome by measuring the FRFs between displacements at a reference point and other point in sequence with a two channel measuring equipment This procedure is based on the assumption that the characteristics of excitation applied to the structure do not vary with time.

  • In this study, structural deformation estimation using displacement-strain relationship is investigated. When displacements of a structure cannot be measured directly, estimation of displacements using strain data can be an alternative solution. Additionally, the deformation of the whole structure as well as the displacement at the point of interest can be estimated. Strain signals are obtained front Fiber Bragg Grating(FBG) sensors that have an excellent multiplexing ability. Some experiments were performed on two beams and a plate to which FBG sensors were attached in the laboratory. Strain signals from FBG sensors along a single strand of optical fiber were obtained through wavelength division multiplexing(WDM) method. The beams and the plate structures were subjected to various loading conditions, and deformed shapes were reconstructed from the displacement-strain transformation relationship. The results show good agreements with those measured directly from laser sensors. Moreover, the whole structural shapes of the beams and the plate were estimated using only some strain sensors.

  • In the three dimensional deformation analysis by terrestrial photographs, iterative reweighted similarity transformation method is used for more accurate displacement computation. Also, Bayesian Inference method is used in the detection of unstable points and the analytical method for displacement patterns analysis is proposed in this study. In results, the accuracy of displacement estimation was improved by applying the weights of least absolute method ($\Sigma$|d|⇒min) and more accurate detection of displaced points could be achieved by Bayesian Inference. The analytical method in the patterns of displacement proposed in this study could be adapted to the movement analysis of objects wholly or partly.

  • In this study, measurements were conducted by image processing to do an in-depth evaluation of strain of rebar in a uniaxial tension test. The distribution of strain and the necking region were evaluated. The image processing is used to analyze the color information of a colored image, so that the parts consistent with desired targets can be distinguished from the other parts. After this process, the image was converted to a binary one. Centroids of each target region are obtained in the binary images. After repeating such process on the images from starting point to the finishing point of the test, elongation between targets is calculated based on the centroid of each target. The tensile test were conducted on grade 60 #7(D22) and #9(D29) rebars fabricated in accordance with ASTM A615 standards. Strain results from image processing were compared to the results from a conventional strain gauge, in order to see the validity of the image processing. With the image processing, the measuring was possible in not only the initial elastic region but also the necking region of more than 0.5(50%) strain. The image processing can remove the measuring limits as long as the targets can be video recorded. It also can measure strain at various spots because the targets can easily be attached and detached. Thus it is concluded that the image processing helps overcome limits in strain measuring and will be used in various ways.

  • In this paper, we propose a method to evaluate the material properties of high-yield strength materials exceeding 10GPa from spherical indentation. Using a regression equation considering four indentation variables, we map the load displacement relation into a stress-strain relation. To calculate the properties of high-strength materials, we then write a program that produces material properties using the loading / unloading data from the indentation test. The errors in material properties computed by the program are within 0.3, 0.8, and 6.4 for the elastic modulus, yield strength, and hardening coefficient, respectively.

  • In this study we establish a process to predict hardening behavior considering the Bauschinger effect for zircaloy-4 sheets. When a metal is compressed after tension in forming, the yield strength decreases. For this reason, the Bauschinger effect should be considered in FE simulations of spring-back. We suggested a suitable specimen size and a method for determining the optimum tightening torque for simple shear tests. Shear stress-strain curves are obtained for five materials. We developed a method to convert the shear load-displacement curve to the effective stress-strain curve with FEA. We simulated the simple shear forward/reverse test using the combined isotropic/kinematic hardening model. We also investigated the change of the load-displacement curve by varying the hardening coefficients. We determined the hardening coefficients so that they follow the hardening behavior of zircaloy-4 in experiments.

  • In this study the applicability of a Digital Image Correlation (DIC) method was investigated by measuring the displacement and vibration of rock pillar due to underground mining blasting. When combined with a high speed photography technology, the DIC method provides an excellent photographic image processing ability that can be used to convert the evolving full-field surface properties of structures to 2D or 3D set of coordinate values. The measured coordinate sets are then used to calculate the displacement, strain, and velocity of the target structure. This technique is widely used in science and engineering, and continuously finds its new application areas. In this study, the DIC system and the conventional seismograph were compared for their ability to measure the displacement and vibration produced by blasting. In the field test both methods showed similar results. Thus, it is concluded that the DIC method is feasible to measure the ground displacements and vibrations from blasting.

  • An algorithm is proposed for estimating axle loads of trucks moving over a bridge by measuring dynamic responses. The bridge was modeled by a beam structure in the current applications of the proposed algorithm. Among the state vectors, measured acceleration was used and displacement was computed from measured strain at the same location. Nodal force vectors were computed by using a ready-made database of equivalent nodal force transformation matrix. The algorithm was examined through simulation studies and laboratory experiments. The effects of measurement noise and velocity error were investigated through simulation studies.
