  • The isolators have been generally used to reduce a seismic force. If the isolators apply to the nuclear power plants(NPPs), the durability and capacity for the structures and equipments should be ensured during the life time. In this study, the long-term behavior of isolated NPPs was analyzed for ensuring the seismic safety. The properties of isolator due to the age-related degradation were analyzed. And the seismic behavior of isolated buildings was analyzed by considering the aging of rubber bearings in different temperature environments. According to the analysis results, the natural frequency of structures was increased with time. But the maximum acceleration and maximum displacement of isolated structures have not changed significantly. Although the damaged of structure did not occurred by aging of isolators, it was presented that the spectral acceleration at the target frequency of isolated structure increased with the temperature. Therefore the isolators in the isolated buildings should be carefully designed and manufactured considering the temperature-dependancy of rubber material.

  • Seismic design forces for bridge components may be determined by modifying elastic member forces of design earthquakes using appropriate response modification factors according to the national design code of bridges Modeling technique of pile foundation system is one of the important parameters which greatly affects the results in the process of the elastic seismic analysis of a bridge system with pile foundation. In this paper, a approximate and simplified modeling technique of a pile foundation system for the practical purposes is presented. The modeling technique is based on the stiffnesses of pile foundation during earthquake. The horizontal stiffnesses are determined from the resistance-deflection curves derived from the results of dynamic field tests using cyclic loads and the vertical stiffness includes the effects of the end bearing capacities and side friction of piles as well as the pile compliances under the expected vertical load level. The applicability of the proposed technique has been validated through the some example bridge analyses.

  • Recently, there are highly interests on structural damping to improve resistance of seismic and wind. It has been frequently used hysteresis damping devices made of steel because of economic efficiency, construction, and maintenance. This paper presents the effective reduction of seismic response by using Kagome damping system(SKDS) in rahmen system apartment building. The proposed system is designed to be activated by the relative displacement between the building and the stairs. It is performed nonlinear dynamic analysis to review the effects of earthquake response reduction for the 20-stories rahmen framed apartment building. In the analysis of the SKDS system, the reduction of maximum response displacement, maximum response acceleration and layer shear force are compared with the seismic design, and the result show that allowable story displacement is satisfied with Korean Building Code (KBC 2016).

  • In this study, the control performance of a smart top-story isolation system for tall buildings subjected to wind excitation was investigated. To this end, a 77-story tall building structure was employed and wind loads obtained from wind tunnel test were used for numerical simulations. The top-story of an example structure is separated from the main structure by a smart base isolation system composed of friction pendulum systems (FPS) and MR dampers. The primary purpose of the smart top-story isolation system is to mitigate the dynamic responses of the main structure, but the excessive movement of the isolated top story may cause the unstableness of the building structure. Therefore, the skyhook control algorithm was used to effectively reduce both responses of the isolated top story and the main structure. The control performance of the proposed smart top-story isolation system was investigated in comparison with that of the passive top-story isolation system. It has been shown from numerical simulation results that the smart top-story isolation system can effectively reduce wind-induced responses of the example building structure compared to the passive top-story isolation system with reduction of the top-story movement.

  • To design a submerged floating railway that is safe against underwater explosions, railway behavior must be investigated and clarified. In this paper, shock waves and impulse pressures generated by a charge away from the submerged floating railway are expressed using experimental formulas. The submerged floating railway tethered by mooring lines is modeled as a simply supported beam with elastic springs. Finite element analysis for the beam model subjected to impulse loading is conducted so that the response of the submerged floating railway can be investigated. For design purposes, a simplified analysis method combined with dynamic load factor is proposed for the same model. Maximum deformation and internal forces are calculated and compared with the time dependent analysis results. It is shown that the simplified analysis results show good agreement.

  • In general, load carrying capacity, one of the load & resistance capacities in bridges, has more margins than the load carrying capacity evaluated with theoretical methods, unless there are severe damages, defects or material deterioration phenomena that can have a great impact on the behavior of bridges. However, errors have been already included in the current processes of loading tests and structural analysis for measuring load carrying capacity, thus devaluing the reliability of response adjustment factor. Therefore, this study found out the problems of existing electric resistance strain and displacement sensors in sensor suite to solve the problems with sensors and the errors in the appropriateness of structural analysis model, thereby leading to the changes into an optical fiber smart sensor with excellent performance. Besides, the study attempted to ensure the accuracy of response adjustment factor by selecting the optimal models through the interpretation of various structural analysis models.

  • This study presents the optimal isolation period according to the number of vertically expended stories in order to provide the basic data for the application of the seismic isolation system in the vertically expended remodeling of the aged apartment. As a result of the structural analysis, the isolation period should be at least twice the primary structure in three-story vertical expansion, three times in two-story expansion, and four times in one-story expansion for the effective application of the isolation system. On the basis of the result, the efficacy of an isolation system for the actual apartment structure, which is three-story vertically expended, was analytically verified. The maximal acceleration response on the top floor reduced by 70% and 65% of the non-isolated structure in the X and Y directions respectively. Additionally, the base shear force decreased by 30% in the both directions, compared to the non-isolated structure.

  • Under transverse earthquake shaking, arching action of bridge structures develops along the deck between the abutments thus providing the so-called deck resistance. The magnitude of the arching action for bridge structures is dependent on the number of spans, connection condition between deck and abutment or piers, and stiffness ratio between superstructure and substructure. In order to investigate the arching action effects for inelastic seismic responses of PSC Box bridges, seismic responses evaluated by pushover analysis, capacity spectrum analysis and nonlinear time-history analysis are compared for 18 example bridge structures with two types of span numbers (short bridge, SB and long bridge, LB), three types of pier height arrangement (regular, semi-regular and irregular) and three types of connection condition between superstructure and substructure (Type A, B, C). The arching action effects (reducing inelastic displacement and increasing resistance capacity) for short bridge (SB) is more significant than those for long bridge (LB). Semi-regular and irregular bridge structures have more significant arching action than regular bridges.

  • In order to analytically evaluate buffeting responses, the analysis of wind characteristics such as turbulence intensity, turbulence length, gust, roughness coefficient, etc must be a priority. Static aerodynamic force coefficients, flutter coefficients, structural damping ratios, aerodynamic damping ratios and natural frequencies affect the analytical responses. The bridge interested in this paper has being been used for 32 years. As the time passes, current terrain conditions around the bridge are different markedly from the conditions it was built 32 years ago. Also, wind environments were considerably varied by the climate change. For this reason, it is necessary to evaluate the turbulence intensity, length, spectrum and roughness coefficient of the bridge site from full-scale measurements using the structural health monitoring system. The evaluation results indicate that wind characteristics of bridge site is analogous to that of open terrain although the bridge is located on the coastal area. To calculate buffeting responses, the analysis variables such as damping ratios, static aerodynamic force coefficients and natural frequency were evaluated from measured data. The analysis was performed with regard to 4 cases. The evaluated variables from measured data are applied to the first and second analysis cases. And the other analysis cases were performed based on Design Guidelines for Steel Cable Supported Bridges. The calculated responses of each analysis cases are compared with the buffeting response measured at less than 25m/s wind speed. It is verified that the responses by the numerical analysis applying the estimated variables based on full-scale measurements are well agreed with the measured actual buffeting responses under wind speed 25m/s. Also, the extreme wind speed corresponding to a recurrence interval 200 years is derived from Gumbel distribution. The derived wind speed for return period of 200 years is 45m/s. Therefore the buffeting responses at wind speed 45m/s is determined by the analysis applying the estimated variables.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the characteristics of installation dimensions of speed control humps based on the theoretical dynamic analyses. The field surveys of speed control humps were performed first to compare their sizes with those suggested in the installation standard. Then, the displacement response spectra under impact loads were obtained using the single degree of freedom models where the vehicle and human were assumed to combine completely. The analysis results showed that the human perception became larger as the width and height of the humps increased, but the extremely higher uncomfortableness should be avoided. In addition, the ratio between the width and height should be considered when the humps are designed and installed because the ratio governs the vertical acceleration magnitude.
