  • In this study, both the model test and the numerical analysis were carried out to figure out the physical behaviour of the model pile during the tunnelling. As a result, both the vertical and the horizontal displacements were simultaneously occurred in the model pile which is subjected to the working load during the volume loss. Consequently, the phenomenon of inclination took place in the model pile. The degree of inclination of the model pile depends on volume loss due to tunnel excavation, pile tip's offset from the tunnel centre, and bearing ground conditions in which pile tip is located. Therefore, in the planning stage of urban tunnelling not only the ground behaviour with respect to the pile locations, but also the physical behaviour of pile itself should be carefully analysed to avoid damage of adjacent buildings.

  • The present study presents a nonlinear finite element analysis (FEA) approach using the general program of Abaqus to evaluate the seismic response of unreinforced masonry walls strengthened with the steel bar truss system developed in the previous investigation. For finite element models of masonry walls, the concrete damaged plasticity (CDP) and meso-scale methods were considered on the basis of the stress-strain relationships under compression and tension and shear friction-slip relationship of masonry prisms proposed by Yang et al. in order to formulate the interface characteristics between brick elements and mortars. The predictions obtained from the FEA approach were compared with test results under different design parameters; as a result, a good agreement could be observed with respect to the crack propagation, failure mode, rocking strength, peak strength, and lateral load-displacement relationship of masonry walls. Thus, it can be stated that the proposed FEA approach shows a good potential for designing the seismic strengthening of masonry walls.

  • In this study, three types of combined isolator consisting of High Damping Rubber Bearing (HDRB) and wire isolator were developed for Uninterruptible Power Supply system (UPS). The dynamic characteristics of the combined isolator were investigated through one-axis shaking table test. The input acceleration were generated in accordance with ICC-ES AC156 code. Scale factors of the input acceleration were designed to be 0.5-2 times the required response spectrum defined in ICC-ES AC156. Based on the test results, damage and dynamic characteristics of the UPS were investigated: including natural frequency, damping ratio, acceleration time history response, dynamic amplification factor and relative displacement. Based on that, it was found that the combined isolator developed in this study could improve the seismic behavior of the UPS, in particular, the response acceleration.

  • Owing to the recent increase in the frequency of explosion accidents, blast resistive design has garnered attention to reduce the damage of important structural elements. However, domestic research on the blast resistive structures is still insufficient, and domestic design guideline against blast loads are not documented yet. In this study, a numerical study on the RC blast resistive walls, where the test variable was the presence of FRP sheet, was performed using LS-DYNA program. Based on the numerical results, displacement-time hysteretic curve, pressure-impulse diagram, and fragility curve of the test specimens were derived. It was shown that the FRP sheet strengthening method is efficient to improve the blast resistive performance of the RC wall. Also, the strengthening effect of FRP sheet on the RC wall was stronger when the magnitude of the blast load was greater.

  • Composite structures have components and joints. Theses connections or joints can be potentially weak points in the structure. The failure mode of the composite bolted joint is designed as a bearing failure mode for structural safety. The load-displacement relation exhibits bearing failure mode shows a nonlinear behavior after the initial failure and progressive failure behavior. In order to accurately predict the failure behavior of composite bolted joints, this study modified the shear damage variable calculation process in the existing progressive failure analysis model. The results of the bearing stress-bearing strain of the composite bolted joint were predicted using the modified progressive failure analysis model, and the modified model was verified through comparison with the previous progressive analysis model.

  • In this paper, the structural-thermal-optical performance analysis of the mirror was performed by setting the laser heat source as the boundary condition of the thermal analysis. For the laser heat source model, the Beer-Lambert model considering semi-transparent optical material based on Gaussian beam was selected as the boundary condition, and the mechanical part was not considered, to analyze the performance of only the mirror. As a result of the thermal analysis, thermal stress and thermal deformation data due to temperature change on the surface of the mirror were obtained. The displacement data of the surface due to thermal deformation was fitted to a Zernike polynomial to calculate the optical performance, through which the performance of the mirror when a high-energy laser was incident on the mirror could be predicted.

  • This study was performed to make a comparison on low-velocity impact behavior between graphite/epoxy composite laminate and steel plate. In order to validate the proposed scheme fur the impact behavior of the plate, the Karas's impact model was used. The impact models for this comparative study are the graphite/epoxy composite plate having $[0/90/45/-45/-45/45/90/0]_{8S}$ laminate sequence and the steel plate with a steel ball impactor. The low-velocity impact behaviors for two types of plates were comparatively investigated and performed by considering different impactor velocities and weights respectively. In this investigation, it was found that the composite laminate has impact energy absorption effect due to more flexible behavior than the steel plate, and also it has better characteristics on impact damage and weight.

  • Nondestructive pile integrity tests are used to confirm the construction of drilled shafts as the foundation of many facilities. However, the safety of the foundation is determined only by the presence or absence of defects, and the location and scale of defects are not considered. In this study, we propose an analysis model for the lateral bearing capacity and section force connected building information modeling (BIM) by extracting the cross-sectional characteristics of the defect in piles and reviewing the safety of piles with defects. Defects at the top of piles had more effect on the change in the deflection of the pile head. Moreover, the decrease in the axial force-bending moment interaction diagram due to cross-sectional reduction increased the risk of destruction of the piles more than the change in the bending moments due to defects. The proposed method can help review the comprehensive safety of piles.

  • Recently structures become longer and higher because of the developments of new materials and construction techniques. However, such modern structures are susceptible to excessive structural vibrations, which may induce problems of serviceability and structural damages. In this paper we attempt to control structural vibration using the probabilistic neural network(PNN) and the artificial neural network(ANN) based on the training pattern that consist of only the structural state vector and the control force. The state vectors of the structure and control forces made by linear quadratic regulator(LQR) algorithm are used for training pattern of PNN and ANN. The proposed algorithm is applied for the vibration control of the three story shear building under Northridge earthquake. Control results by the proposed PNN and ANN are compared with each other.
