  • The study area in the East Sea is located on the northeastern margins of the Ulleung Basin near the Kita-Yamato Bank. The research area provides the important clue to the development of Miocene basins which are characterized by the normal faults and volcanic activities related to rifting in the continental crust. Kita-Yamato Bank is a small sediment-filled graben which was formed by failed rifting in the Early Miocene. The basins rapidly vary the bathymetry, depth of acoustic basement and thickness of sedimentary layer. The tension in the study area caused the extensional lithospheric deformation before/during the Early Miocene. In consequence, tectonic forces resulted in the depression or subsidence of basement from continental rifting in the Kita-Yamato Bank followed by the opening of the Ulleung Basin, and caused the onset of graben or half-graben structure bounded by large blocked syn-rift faults. Afterward no significant tectonic deformation exists, with the consequence that post-rift normal faults with small heave were formed and reactivated by the resultant forces such as tectonic subsidence, sediment loading and volcanic activity. The Cenozoic sediment layer has a maximum thickness of 1.0 s along the center of the graben or half-graben, which overlies the consolidated acoustic basement. Seismic units V and IV supposed to be syn-rift sedimentary rocks are deformed by both the volcanic activities and numerous basement-involved normal faults induced from extension. In the uppermost layer, slump scars resulted from the slope failure are recognized.

  • Hydroacoustic surveys were conducted in the East China Sea, in the summers of 1990-1991 to investigate the distribution and migration behavior of fish, such as the diel changes in the distributions of fish, the thermoselection behavior of fish, and the fish reactions to a surveying vessel. The hydroacoustic observations were taken with a scientific echo sounder operating at 50kHz and a microcomputer-based echo processor. Fish samples were collected by bottom trawling and temperature was measured with a DBT system. The patterns of fish distributions were compared with the vertical profiles of water temperature. The results obtained can be summarized as follows: 1. The time series of hydroacoustic observations on the downward migration at dawn in the central region of East China Sea showed that the migration rate was 0.24 m/min. In this region, most of the fish collected by bottom trawling during the surveys were squid (Photologio edulis f. budo) and horse mackeral (Trachurus japonicus). 2. The hydroacoustic observations, which together associated with temperature data, indicated that squid and horse mackeral concentrated nocturally in a narrow vertical band of thermocline, particularly in summer when the survey region was strongly stratified. This result suggest that the nocturnal vertical distribution of these species evidently is controlled by temperature. 3. When the survey vessel, that is running at a speed of 11 knots, has suddenly stopped, the fish which concentrated beneath the transducer showed a strong avoidance reaction in the form of rapid downward migration. After a few minutes, the descending reaction disappeared and the fish slowly began the upward migration toward their original swimming positions. Trawl data suggest that the fish, which showed the avoidance reaction, was Liparis tessellatus.

  • While limit states design (LSD) is currently the standard structural design practice, it is relatively new in the geotechnical design. Adoption of LSD far geotechnical design is an international trend. In the present study, various LSD codes from the United States, Canada, and Europe were reviewed. A simple first-order-second-moment (FOSM) reliability analysis was performed to determine theoretically the ranges of load and resistance factor values for representative loads and foundation bearing capacity, respectively. In order for foundation design to be consistent with current structural design practice, it would be desirable to use the same loads, load factors and load combinations. The values of load factor, obtained from the FOSM analysis, were found to be generally consistent with those given in the codes, whereas the values of resistance factor indicated overall lower ranges due to high values of coefficient of variation used in the analysis. Since the degree of uncertainties included in bearing capacity of foundations varies with the methods used to estimate the bearing capacity, different values of resistance factor should be used fur different methods. For the purpose, continuous efforts are needed to be made first to accurately identify and quantify the uncertainties in the methods.

  • Despite the recent rapid advancement of science and technology, we have been experiencing the decline in productivity since the 2000s. This study aims to investigate the decline at both industry and firm levels, by looking at the emergence and growth of large firms such as Amazon, Alphabet, and Apple and M&A trends. Following the results of previous studies, our results show that productivity at industry level has decreased since the 2000s. Particularly, in the period after 2011, the deterioration of allocative efficiency due to the large firms and the decline in the growth rate of surviving firms in the industry with low ratio of large firms contributed to the productivity decline. On the other hand, our analysis at firm level demonstrates that the productivity of firms that acquired IT firms improved over the entire period. While M&As have a positive impact on productivity, M&As with a demand-side motive such as market penetration and expansion of channels have a relatively larger impact than the ones for production or operation efficiency. Our results also suggest that the higher the proportion of large firms in a specific industry, the lower the productivity of individual firms in the same industry. Overall, given that the industry's structural changes for digital transformation tends to strengthen the growth of large firms, our findings have significant implications by empirically identifying the relationships of the emergence of large firms, the acquisition of IT/Non-IT firms, and motivations for M&As to firm/industry productivity.

  • Seabed beneath and near the coastal structures may undergo large excess pore water pressure composed of oscillatory and residual components in the case of long durations of high wave loading. This excess pore water pressure may reduce effective stress and, consequently, the seabed may liquefy. If the liquefaction occurs in the seabed, the structure may sink, overturn, and eventually fail. Especially, the seabed liquefaction behavior beneath a gravity-based structure under wave loading should be evaluated and considered for design purpose. In this study, to evaluate the liquefaction potential on the seabed, numerical analysis was conducted using 2-dimensional numerical wave tank. The 2-dimensional numerical wave tank was expanded to account for irregular wave fields, and to calculate the dynamic wave pressure and water particle velocity acting on the seabed and the surface boundary of the structure. The simulation results of the wave pressure and the shear stress induced by water particle velocity were used as inputs to a FLIP(Finite element analysis LIquefaction Program). Then, the FLIP evaluated the time and spatial variations in excess pore water pressure, effective stress and liquefaction potential in the seabed. Additionally, the deformation of the seabed and the displacement of the structure as a function of time were quantitatively evaluated. From the analysis, when the shear stress was considered, the liquefaction at the seabed in front of the structure was identified. Since the liquefied seabed particles have no resistance force, scour can possibly occur on the seabed. Therefore, the strength decrease of the seabed at the front of the structure due to high wave loading for the longer period of time such as a storm can increase the structural motion and consequently influence the stability of the structure.

  • This study investigated the conceptualization and application of new concept of regional resilience with case study in Korea in order to promote more sustainable regional development strategies, while problematizing dominant regional competitiveness concept in the current regional development circle under the condition of stagnant growth and ever-existing crisis in these days. Through literature review, this paper found out that regional resilience is a useful concept both to understand dramatic regional changes and to promote new regional development strategies. Furthermore, the study formulated basic research topics and issues for regional resilience through reviewing existing research outcomes on the measurement and factors of regional resilience. Through case study of two macro city-regions in Korea, this study also found out that regional resilience patterns and processes are differentiated according to the place and its scale and that both regional industrial structure formed in a path-dependent way and regional competitive characteristics are all significant to understand the regional resilience patterns and processes.

  • We have cultured the bluefin tuna in Yokjido, Tongyeong with floating cage which was vulnerable to harmful dinoflagellate, Cochiodinium polykrikoides. This study inspected a vertical migration of phytoplankton and Chl-a for reasonable sinking depth in floating cage. Furthermore, we analyzed the fluctuation of the phytoplankton including harmful dinoflagellates occurring in Yokgido for 6 years. Total cell density showed a significant monthly variation and the flora was predominated with diatoms. Gymnodinium sp. occurred 19 times, the greatest number of occurrence in all kinds of dinoflagellates during summer. In particular, the total number of occurrence at C. polykrikoides was 8, and harmful dinoflagellates such as Karenia brevis/Fibrcapsa japonica occurred. The relationship between Chl-a concentration/total cell number and sunset/sunrise was significant and reasonable sinking depth in floating cage was found to be at least 3m from the water surface, which was associated with massive fish kills caused by C. polykrikoides.

  • Tetraethoxysilane(TEOS) as a silica precursor and hydrochloric acid as an acid catalyst have been used in a surfactant-template synthesis of micrometer-sized mesoporous silica microspheres based on the macroemulsion technique. Increase in the concentration of tetraethoxysilane of the reaction mixture has a serious destructive effect on the particle shape and pore structure. As the acid concentration increases, relatively small microspheres are formed without destroying their spherical morphology of the particles as well as the pore structures. However, due to the attractive interaction between particles in an acidic condition, strong silica agglomerates are formed, and therefore are subject to a post-ultrasonic treatment to separate into an individual single particle.

  • In an attempt to characterize the ventral root afferent fibers, arterial blood pressure responses to stimulation of the ventral root (VR) were observed in anesthetized cats. Effects of the morphine administered either intravenously or direct spinally and of the spinal lesions on the pressor responses were compared. Followings are the results obtained. 1) Stimulation of the VR with C-strength, high frequency stimuli evoked a marked pressor response. No depressor response, which had been reported during peripheral nerve stimulation, was observed during VR stimulation with low frequency. 2) Acute cervical spinalization abolished the pressor response, indicating the involvement of supraspinal mechanism. 3) The ascending spinal pathways of the pressor response were located in the dorsolateral funiculus bilaterally. 4) Intravenously administered morphine exaggerated the pressor response to VR stimulation, while direct spinally administered morphine suppressed it. From the above results it was concluded that the ventral root afferent fibers have more similar properties to muscular C-afferent fibers than to cutaneous C-fibers.

  • In the settlement analysis of shallow foundation soil properties, loads and soil strata involve many uncertainties so it is necessary to do analysis of settlement that considers the probabilistic properties of each variable. This study is performed to probabilistic analysis for settlement of shallow foundation consisted of individual footings by using Monte Carlo Method. To consider the uncertainty of variables, both the soil properties and loads are assumed to be normal distribution random variables and get settlement mean and coefficient of variation of individual footing. And the settlement of each individual footing is also assumed to be normal distribution. Settlement of each individual footing which considers the probability of soft soil pockets in soil strata follows Markov process. Then it is performed to do sensitivity analysis which is involved to excess probability of allowable criteria of maxi mum settlement and differential settlement according to varity of each variable. It is thought to be proper that the settlement analysis of shallow foundation should be analyzed considering uncertainty of variables and soil stratum conditions.
