  • The horizontal and vertical earth pressures in backfill space which is narrowly excavated like ditch are affected by the share of ditch backfill space and the wall friction between excavated surface and backfill soil. In this paper, for the excavated surface the Handy's equation of a symmetric vertical case and the Kellogg's equation of a symmetric sloped one are modified to show the minor principal stress arch for the unsymmetrical excavated backfill space. Compared with the soil test box result, a similarity in magnitude and distribution of backfill earth pressure shows that the earth pressure has been observed. The backfill earth pressure in unsymmetrically sloped space has been shown twice as much as the one in vertically excavated space and also remarkable decline of arching for the former case. It is verified that the earth pressure equation should account the shape and size of backfill space to calculate the earth pressure for similar structure to the one handled in this study.

  • The earth pressure acting on the cylindrical retaining wall in cohesionless soils is different from that on the retaining wall in plane strain condition due to three dimensional arching effect. Accurate estimation of earth pressure is required for the design of vertical cylindrical retaining wall. Failure modes of the ground behind vertical shaft are dependent on ground in-situ stress conditions. Failure modes are actually divided into two modes of cylindrical failure mode and funnel-shaped mode with truncated cone surface. Several researchers have attempted to estimate the earth pressure on cylindrical wall for each failure mode, but they have some limitations. In this paper, several equations for estimating the earth pressure on cylindrical wall in cohesionless soils are investigated and new formulations for two failure modes are suggested. It rationally takes into account the overburden pressure, wall friction, and force equilibriums on sliding surface.

  • Under natural condition, many rivers had shallow and gently curved shape in plane. A two dimensional mathematical model of the flow was a very attractive one. The flow characteristics in bended open channels were analyzed. The mathematical model based on the mass and the momentum equation of the two-dimensional unsteady flow was developed by introducing finite difference method and the double sweep algorithm. For the purpose of the verification of this model, the modeling results were applied to the L.F.M flume and the I.I.H.R flume. The results had a good agreement with the experimental data of the flumes. The results could be more close to the experimental data by controlling Chezy Coefficients in order to reduce the effect of friction around side wall, and be studied the importance of the convective term. The water surface profile, the direction and scale of depth average mean velocity and the path of the thread of maximum velocity in bended open channels could be computed.

  • The domestic design method for the shaft resistance of drilled shafts into a bedrock is based on the empirical method, where the uniaxial compressive strength of rock specimen is utilized for calculation of the shaft resistance. This method has uncertainties in prediction of capacity of drilled shafts and result in uneconomic engineering design. Recently a new improved design method was suggested, which reflects important factors that affect the strength of pile sockets. Socket roughness is one of the significant factors influencing the shaft resistance of drilled shaft socketed into rock. In this paper roughness information for the shaft resistance design of socket pile was suggested on the basis of statistical analysis of data measured from wall surface in the bore holes of drilled shafts.

  • Active earth pressure formula, which can consider the effects of ground surface inclination, inclination of inside retaining wall face, wall friction, line load, uniform load, soil cohesion and adhesion, was derived based on the force equilibrium principle. In order to verify the accuracy of this proposed formula, the calculated active earth pressures by the proposed formula were compared with those of graphical solutions. Also, the active earth pressures determined by the proposed formula were compared with those by Coulomb's, Rankine's and Mazindrani's solution under specific conditions. The results matched quite well not only with the graphical solutions but also with those by three other methods. Also, the trend of active earth pressures by the proposed formula were corresponded with results of experimental study by Fang, et al. It can be concluded that this generalized formula not only can overcome the limitations of Rankine's, Coulomb's and Mazindrani's active earth pressure formula but also can consider the external loading conditions.

  • To investigate the seepage effect on the compacted backfill of retaining walls, an expriment and an analytical study were carried out First, the expriment was performed with a two-way permeameter newly designed for the do- termination on the degree of permeability anisotropy of compacted soils. As a result, e-log(kz/ky) plot showed a linear relationship, where kz and ky were permeability coefficients for the normal and the parallel directions to the compaction. The degree of permeability anisotropy, kz/ky was 2 to 4 at Dr>90% for sands, regardless of the methods of compaction. The kz/ky of the fine sand was greater than that of the coarse sand. Second, the exprimental results were applied to the extention of Gray's theory for the investigation of the active thrust affected by the seepage of permeability anisotropy. The active thrust was decreased with the increase in the degree of permeability anisotropy, and it It.as a little effect on wall friction.

  • Since weathering weakens the rock fabric and exaggerates any structural weakness, it affects mechanical properties as well as physical and chemical properties of rock. Weathering leads to a decrease in density, strength, friction angle and cohesion, and subsequently it affects negatively on the stability of rock slope. The purpose of the study is to investigate the changes of the rock slope stability caused by discontinuities which have different weathering grades. For that, the discontinuity samples which are divided into two different weathering grades are obtained from the field and tested their mechanical properties such as JCS, JRC and residual friction angle. In order to evaluate the effects on the stability of slope due to weathering, the deterministic analysis is carried out. That is, the factors of safety for planar failure are calculated for rock masses which have two different weathering grades, such as fresh and weathered rock mass. However, since the JRC and friction angle values are widely scattered and the deterministic analysis cannot consider the variation, the factors of safety cannot represent properly the stability of the rock slope. Therefore, the probabilistic analysis has been used to consider the scattered values. In the deterministic analysis, the factors of safety for the fresh discontinuity and weathered discontinuity are 1.25 and 1.0, respectively. The results indicate the fresh discontinuities are stable for planar failure and the weathered discontinuities are marginally stable. However, the probabilities of failure for the fresh discontinuity and weathered discontinuity are 25.6% and 45.9%, respectively. This shows that both discontinuities are analyzed as unstable in the probabilistic analysis.

  • In this study, the calculation method of the active earth pressure acting on the imaginary vertical plane at the end of the heel of the wall is proposed. For cantilever retaining wall, a change of shear zone behind the wall affects the earth pressure in the vertical plane at the end of heel of the wall depending on wall friction and angle of ground slope. It is very complicated to calculate the earth pressure by a limit equilibrium method (LEM) which considers angles of failure planes varying according to the heel length of the wall. So, the limit analysis method (LAM) is used for calculation of earth pressure in this study. Using the LAM, the earth pressures considering the actual slope angles of failure plane are calculated accurately, and then horizontal and vertical earth pressures are obtained from them respectively. This study results show that by decreasing the relative length of the heel, the slope angle of inward failure plane becomes larger than theoretical slope angle but the slope angle of outward failure plane does not change. And also the friction angle on the vertical plane at the end of the heel of the wall is between the ground slope angle and the wall friction angle, thereafter the active earth pressure decreases. Finally, the Coulomb earth pressure can be easily calculated from the relationship between friction angle (the ratio of vertical earth pressure to horizontal earth pressure) and relative length of the heel (the ratio of heel length to wall height).

  • Heat transfer distributions and friction factors in square channels (3.5 ${\times}$ 3.5 cm) with twisted tape inserts and with twisted tape inserts plus interrupted ribs are respectively investigated. Tests are performed for Reynolds numbers ranging from 8,900 to 29,000. The rib height-to-channel hydraulic diameter, e/Dh, is kept at 0.057 and test section length-to-hydraulic diameter, L/Dh is 30. The twisted tape is 0.1 mm thick carbon steel sheet with diameter of 3.3cm, length of 90cm, and 2.5 turns. The square ribs are arranged to follow the trace of the twisted tape and along the flow direction defined as axial interrupted ribs. Each wall of the square channel is composed of isolated aluminum sections. The following conclusions from the experimental study were drawn as: 1) In the 4 heating wall channel with twisted tape inserts, Nusselt number based on bottom wall temperature is enhanced by 1.2 - 1.6 times if adding the axial interrupted ribs on the bottom wall only. 2) The twisted tape with interrupted ribs under the two-sided heating condition produces the highest heat transfer performance. 3) Friction factor data obtained for the square channel with twisted tape inserts plus axial interrupted ribs are less than those in the past publications for circular tubes with axial interrupted ribs and twisted tape inserts.
