This study proves the applicability for fear of crime to old people especially based on risk interpretation model consisting of perceived risk of crime, behavioral response and fear of crime. Analysis results are as follows. First, disorder factors as social characteristics showed statistically significant influences on perceived risk of crime, behavioral response and fear of crime. Second, direct experienced crime victimization only affected perceived risk of crime while indirect experienced crime victimization had an effect on perceived risk of crime and fear of crime as well. Third, perceived risk of crime influenced fear of crime. Fourth, perceived risk of crime was concerned with fear of crime. Fifth, behavioral response was affiliated with fear of crime. These results reveal that risk interpretation model can be applied to senior's fear of crime. Moreover, disorder factor as social characteristic and experienced crime victimization as individual characteristic help the elderly perceive the risk of crime, bring behavioral response. Consequently, they play a role of factors affecting fear of crime. It is emphasized that support policy is required for the elderly who had experienced crime and stabilization of community environment if necessary to improve the quality of life.

  • A survey of 220 male and 233 female residents of Seoul was carried out to investigate why women appeared to be more fearful of crime than men. As expected, female respondents reported higher levels of fear of crime and perceived physical vulnerability to crime. Incivility factors in the neighborhood and perceived possibility of criminal victimization were significant predictors of fear of crime for both male and female respondents. For women more psychological variables such as trait anxiety and age were other significant predictors of their fear of crime, whereas the distance to police station and frequency of watching crime-related TV programs were significant predictors for men's fear of crime.

  • Due to the rapid developments of South Korea, local communities have faced various social pathologies which generated more violent crimes and criminalized younger students. Several horrendous violences, such as a Kangneung Girl assassination assault case in July 2017 and a Busan Girls assault case in September 2017, happened only between young students. This ignited a public uproar and people were more interested in related national policies and voiced for stronger penalties in ways that punish student offenders and abolish the juvenile law. In this respect, various effective policies are needed to prevent the school violence and to eliminate the students' fear of crime. These are expected to create an environment where students could enthusiastically study in a safe environment. Focusing on elementary school students, this study seeks to empirically analyse the effects of their perception of local crime control governance on their fear of crime and, subsequently, to suggest policy implications which could prevent future school violence and juvenile crimes and reduce the students' fear of crime. The results of this study are as follows: First, the analysis of the general fear of local crime control governance and the fear of crime showed that elementary school students' trust in police officers had a significant effect on the general fear. Second, the analysis of the local fear of crime control governance and the fear of crime highlighted that their trust in the police, social ties, intimacy between the police and residents had a significant effect on the specific fear. Therefore, this study is applicable in reality in that it can contribute to the prevention of school violence and reduction of fear of crime by constructing local crime control governance.

  • Previous studies on fear of crime used survey and interview to measure fear of crime. However, though these methods can measure fear of crime in past events, they cannot measure real time fear of crime. In this paper, we use EEG to measure fear of crime in real time. We measure and analyze the EEG of subjects watching the video and confirm the difference between three groups classified according to the degree of fear of crime. As a result, about two times more beta waves are shown when a group of subjects with a high degree of fear of crime watches the images of fear of crime and 1.5 times more beta waves are shown among the other groups. Although watching videos related to the crime increased the beta waves, the police video showed little increase in beta waves because the subjects can sense safety in the video even if it is related to crime.

  • Today, crime has become a serious threat to social safety so citizen's desire for safety has increased. So the private security has emerged as a new industry for safety and security and became a crucial component. Private security is responsible not only covers the limitations of the police work, but also fills citizen's desire of security. However, quantitative research on private security has rarely been done and the results of the private security study are not effectively utilized due to biased research trends in Korea. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to evaluate the effects of community incivility on fear of crime and the moderation effect of private security. To accomplish this purpose, this research uses 6,919 samples from the National Crime Victimization Survey(2014) and conducts hierarchical regression through STATA 13.0 program. As a results, private security guard showed the main effect on the generalized fear of crime, but had not a significant influence on the interaction effect with the community incivility. On the other hand, the moderation effect of electronic security was statistically significant in relation to the community incivility and specific fear of crime. In other words, in a place with high physical disorder, the fear of crime is relatively low in the case of the electronic machine, compared with the case where there is no electronic machine. The implications and limitations based on these results are discussed in the conclusion.
