  • This study examined the effects of balance taping therapy on improving knee pain and the obstacles to daily activity in rural elderly women. The research design was a quasi-experimental research using a non-equivalent control group pre-test and post-test design. The data were collected from January 19th to April 14th, 2017. The research subjects included female elderly over 65 years old who visited 12 senior centers located at Y city in rural areas. The participants were composed of 26 people in the experimental group and 28 people in the control group. Data were collected before and 24 hours after balance taping therapy, and the pain and obstacles to daily activity were measured. The collected data were analyzed using the PASW Statistics 23 Program, which included a $X^2-test$, Shapiro-Wilk test, and Mann-Whitney U test. After the intervention, significant differences were observed in the knee pain (Z=-6.658, p<.001) and obstacles to daily activity (Z=-3.466, p=.001). With regard to lower domain variables of the obstacles to daily activity, significant differences in standing up (Z=-2.860, p=.004), daily activity (Z=-2.629, p=.009), walking (Z=-3.868, p<.001), and dressing up (Z=-2.049, p=.040) were observed between the two groups. On the other hand, there were no significant differences in grip (Z=-.542, p=.588) and arm stretching (Z=-.416, p=.678). In conclusion, applying balance taping to rural elderly women clearly decreases the level of knee pain, reduces the obstacles to daily activity, and improves their quality of life.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to testify effects of Balance Taping Therapy on the pain and range of motion of the knee joint in the female elderly with degenerative knee arthritis. Method: The research design was one group pretest-posttest design. The data were collected from November 15 to December 25, 2004. The subjects were 23 female elderly with degenerative knee arthritis who were registered at one public health center in Busan. Balance Taping Therapy was conducted twice a week for 5 weeks. The data were analyzed such as the number, percentage, paired t-test, Kolmogorov-Smirnov test using SPSS 10.0 WIN Program. Result: The pain in the female elderly with degenerative knee arthritis significantly decreased from 8.82 to 6.04 after Balance Taping Therapy(t=16.781, p=0.001). The knee flexion joint range of motion in the female elderly with degenerative knee arthritis significantly increased from 119.73 to 123.13 after Balance Taping Therapy (t=-6.003, p=0.001). The knee extention joint range of motion statistically significantly increased from 112.74 to 117.83 after Balance Taping Therapy(t=-8.940, p=0.001). Conclusion: Balance Taping Therapy proved an effective nursing intervention in decreasing pain and increasing the range of motion of the knee joint in the female elderly with degenerative knee arthritis.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of balance taping procedures on lower back pain. Method: This study is nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest design of quasi-experimental study. From May in 2004 to July in 2004, the research was done for females who have lower back pain in Gyeonggi province. Experimental group was 37, and control group was 36. The degree of lower back pain and that of the pain on activity of daily living(ADL) were each measured two times. Result: In the experimental group, the lower back pain score before taping was 6.38, that of 1 hour after the taping applied was 3.27. The lower back pain score of experimental group was significant statistically decreased and that of control group was almost not changed. Moreover, the pain score on ADL was statistically decreased in experimental group. Therefore balance taping is effective to reduce lower back pain and to improve ability of ADL. Conclusion: This study supports that balance taping may benefit individuals with lower back pain and balance taping therapy can be used as an independent nursing intervention. However, a larger study is in need to provide definite evidence and to determine long-term effects.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the effects of balancing taping therapy on reducing headache in patients with angina pectoris undergoing nitrate IV therapy. Methods: A non-equivalent control group non-synchronized design was used. A total of 50 patients with angina pectoris undergoing nitrate therapy at G hospital participated in the study. For measuring pain intensity, the Visual Analogy Scale (VAS) and Non-Verbal Pain Behavior Scale were used. Data were analyzed using SPSS 19.0 program. Results: No significant differences were observed between the experimental and control groups in pain intensity. However, the number of times of analgesics of experimental group was significantly lower than those of control group. Conclusion: Balance taping can be effective in pain for patients undergoing nitrate IV therapy. Therefore, utilizing the balance taping can be useful method to reduce headache in patients with angina pectoris during the IV therapy of nitrate.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine whether whole-body balance taping therapy could contribute to take balance of all of the body and to decrease the pain. Data were collected from 20 people who received the treatments of physical therapy in one welfare center of Daegu city for four weeks from 6. Jan. 2003 to 7. Feb. 2003. A simple questionnaire and VAS for evaluation of a pain degree was used. And the Biomyth 7 was used to measure the whole-body balance and the sample exercise protocol for KAT 2000, which is a balance training device tool, was also used as an evaluation tool. The result of the study showed that balance level of human body was improved after receiving the whole-body balance taping therapy. Total, Right Left, Front, Back score of the balance level before the therapy was 1033.6, 656.1, 377.6, 639.9, 394.5 respectively. However, the scores of them after the therapy was decreased to 432.0(p<0.01), 293.2(p<0.01), 142.3, 287.7(p<0.05), 143.9(p<0.05) respectively. And the degree of pain before the therapy in the Back and Knee was 6.1, 6.7 respectively. However, the degree of the pain after the therapy was decreased to 3.1(p<0.01), 3.1(p<0.01) respectively. Further studies using case - control groups are required because this study only deal with the before-after test for the same group.
