  • As an alternative to methyl bromide (MeBr) fumigation for the control of quarantine pests of pears (Pyrus pyrifolia cv. Niitaka), the effect of gamma irradiation (0.5~3 kGy) was comparatively investigated. Insects found in the pears were identified Tetranychus urticae Koch and Panonychus ulmi Koch, which were of quarantine importance. These insects were easily destroyed by MeBr even one day after fumigation. Whereas irradiation at 0.5~2 kGy was not enough to reach the mortality, even if 3 kGy showed the same mortality as MeBr after 17 days of treatment. Respiration of pears was stimulated by both increased doses of irradiation and MeBr fumigation. The rates of surface blackening and core browning were accelerated by MeBr rather than higher doses of irradiation. While the changes in flesh firmness and surface color were more apparent in irradiated samples at above 2 kGy than MeBr. There were negligible differences in the contents of titratable acidity, acetaldehyde and ethanol by the treatment conditions except for 3 kGy-irradiated group. Sensory evaluation showed that mere than 1 kGy was the threshold to induce the significant changes in quality of pears.

  • Soil environmental conditions can affect nutrient availability during growth stage of tree fruit. We investigated the cause of disorderd fruit by the influence of soil chemical properties in orchard soil, composition of mineral nutrient in leaves and fruit to occur physiological disorderd fruit at four locations (Ulsan, Gyeongju, Pyeongtaek, Ansung) compared to healthy. There were significantly different (P=0.05) in exchangeable Ca, K, Mg and total nitrogen content in orchard soil between physiological disordered fruit and healthy fruit. The exchangeable Ca content in orchard soil caused by physiological disordered fruit was statistically lower than that of healthy fruit. However, exchangeable K, Mg and total nitrogen contents were higher than that healthy (P=0.05). There was a significant difference (P=0.05) in Ca content between physiological disordered fruit and healthy. Ca content in fruit flesh of physiological disorderedfruit was statistically lower than that of healthy. The physiological disordered fruit was a higher ratio of Mg/Ca in fruit flesh and peel compared to healthy fruit and also the ratios of N/Ca and K/Ca in a leaf were higher. The negative correlation between Ca and K, and Ca and Mg was detected in the fruit flesh of physiological disordered fruit. Therefore, we concluded that insufficient Ca content in fruit may cause 'the physiological disorder' pomelo disease and high content of N, exchangeable K and Mg ion in the soil solution might be disturbs exchangeable Ca ion to be absorbed in fruit.

  • This study was performed to compare antioxidant activities of 80% EtOH extracts from young and mature fruit of three pear cultivars ('Wonhwang', 'Whangkeumbae', and 'Chuwhangbae') classified by three parts (peel, core, and flesh) of mature fruit. The total phenolics compound and flavonoid contents of 80% EtOH extracts from young fruit were 1.5-2.5 times higher than the mature fruit with great cultivar difference. In particular, the contents of those compounds were highest in 'Chuwhangbae' pear. The total phenolics compound and flavonoid contents of 80% EtOH extracts from mature fruit were the most in the peel, core, and flesh respectively. DPPH radical scavenging and $ABTS^+$ radical scavenging of 80% EtOH extracts from the young fruit were higher than the mature fruit of 'Chuwhangbae' pear. DPPH radical scavenging and ABTS+ radical scavenging of 80% EtOH extracts from mature fruit were the highest in the peel, core, and flesh respectively.

  • Postharvest dipping of vacuum infiltration treatments of 'Chojuro' pear fruit in $CaCl_2$ resulted in increased calcium content, especially in fruit peel and outer flesh such as just below peel. As $CaCl_2$ concentrations increaced from 2% to 8% in dipping treatment, calcium content became higher. But vacuum infiltration under 200-600 mmHg did not affect and dipping and vaccum infiltration did not have any difference in fruit calcium content. Decreasing of fruit firmness determined at 4 weeks during storage was slower in fruits with $CaCl_2$ treatment than control.

  • Contents of resveratrol in different parts of Gerbong, Campbell, and Sheridan grapes were measured through HPLC analysis. Resveratrol contents in the flesh, skin, seed, and fruit stem of each grape showed significant differences, whereas little difference was observed among the cultivars. In fruit stem, and skin and seed, resveratrol contents were 170 to 440 and 4 to $8\;{\mu}g/g-dry$ weight, respectively, an indication that the fruit stem may be a good resource for resveratrol production.

  • We evaluated the changes of fruit quality factors and the incidence of physiological disorders during the periods of high temperature environment in 'Wonhwang' and 'Whasan' pears to determine appropriate harvest time for exportation. In 'Wonhwang' pears, the fruits harvested at 130 days after full bloom (DAFB) showed 31.3 and 17.6N of flesh firmness after 5 and 10 days after simulated marketing at $30^{\circ}C$, respectively, while those of the fruits harvested at 135 DAFB lowered to 16.7 or 6.9N, respectively. Whereas, 'Whasan' pear showed higher firmness during 14 days of high marketing condition than 'Wonhwang' pears which represented 30.4, 26.5 and 21.6N in the fruits harvested 145, 150 and 155 DAFB, respectively. Higher soluble solid contents and lower acidity values observed in the late harvested fruits in both cultivar along with increased marketing period at $30^{\circ}C$. Late harvested 'Wonhwang' pears showed higher respiration rate and ethylene production than early harvested ones, while those of 'Whasan' pears showed lower values regardless of fruit maturity which represented less than 50% of 'Wonhwang' pears. The incidence of physiological disorders such as internal browning, water soaking, flesh spot decay, core breakdown and pithiness appeared more severely in the fruits of 'Wonhwang' in accordance with the progress of high temperature marketing and fruit maturity. Whereas, those symptoms were occurred only after 14 days of prolonged marketing time in 'Whasan' pears. Consequently, it was needed to pay more attention to determine the ripeness when the fruits exported to the country with high temperature environment, especially in the fruits of 'Wonhwang' pears showing rapid quality loss and severe physiological disorders.

  • This study was to investigate physiological activities of Cucurbita moschata Duch. extracts by various extraction conditions. Electron donating ability of 50% ethanol extract was 52.37% at 50 mL/g, which was higher than those of 1.0% and 0.1% L-ascorbate solutions. SOD-like activities were the most effective in all of the samples at 50 mL/g, which were barely detectable. Total polyphenol contents were the highest at 50 mL/g for all fiber extracts. The nitrite scavenging effects were the most effective in pH 1.2 at more than 80%. Tyrosinase-inhibitory activities ranged at fewer than 19%. The results will be useful for understanding of the physiological activities of Cucurbita moschata Duch. extracts.

  • We investigated how Germanium (Ge) application, and the application method, affected 'Niitaka' (Pyrus pyrifolia) fruit quality in a conventional orchard. Ge-treated pears weredark yellow in color, indicating appropriate maturation. Other fruit characteristics, and weight, did not significantly differ between tests and controls. Compared to controls, fruit from Ge-treated trees had more soluble solids, a lower acid content, and fewer stone cells, which reduced fruit chewiness. Ge-treated trees showed a higher Ge concentration in fruit but a lower calcium (Ca) concentration. Other fruit mineral nutrients, includingP, K, and Mg, did not differ in level between Ge-treated fruit and controls. Ge-treated fruit showed greater firmness and a heavier specific weight during 6 months of storage, compared to control fruit. Therefore, Ge treatment reduced fruit pithiness, which can be a problem in 'Niitaka' pears. Overall, there was no significant difference between Ge-treated and control fruit qualities, but a combined Ge treatment (fertilization plus foliar application plus trunk injection) slightly improved fruit quality.
