  • Pentadentate Schiff base cobalt(II) complexes; Co(II)(Sal-DET) and Co(II)(Sal-DPT) were synthesized and these complexes were allowed to react with dry to form oxygen adducts of cobalt(II) complexes such as [Co(III)(Sal-DET)]$_2O_2$ and [Co(III)(DPT)]$_2O_2$ in aprotic solvents. These complexes have been identified by IR spectra, TGA, DSC, magnetic susceptibility measurements, and elemental analysis. It has been found that the oxygen adadduct complexes of $\mu$-peroxo type have hexaccordinated octahedral configuration with pentadentate schiff base cobalt(II) and oxygen, but the mole ratio of oxygen to cobalt(III) complexes of first step for oxygen adduct formation reaction of cobalt(II) complexes in aprotic solvents are 1:1. The redox reaction processes of Co(II)(Sal-DET), Co(II)(Sal-DPT), and oxygen adduct of cobalt(II) complexes were investigated by cyclic voltammetry and DPP method with glassy carbon electrode in 0.1M TEAP-DMSO and 0.1M TEAP-pyridine. As a result the reduction reaction processes of Co(III)/Co(II) and Co(II)/Co(I) for cobalt(II) complexes and oxygen adducts of cobalt(II) complexes are two irreversible steps of one eletron process, and reaction processes of oxygen for oxygen adducts complexes were quasireversible and redox range of potential was $E_{pc}$ = -0.97V∼-0.86V and $E_{pa}$ = -0.87V ∼ 0.64V.

  • Tetradentate schiff base cobalt(II) complexes; Co(SED), Co(SND) and Co(SOPD) have been prepared, these complexes have react with dry oxygen in DMSO to form oxygen adducts cobalt(III) complexes; $[Co(SED)(DMSO)]_2O_2,\;[Co(SND)(DMSO)]_2O_2$ and $[Co(SOPD)(DMSO)]_2O_2$. It seems to be that the oxygen adducts cobalt(Ⅲ) complexes have heexa coordinated octahedral configration with tetradentate schiff base cobalt (III), DMSO and oxygen, and the mole ratio of oxygen to cobalt(II) complexes are 1 : 2, these complexes have been identified by IR-Spectra, T.G.A., magnetic susceptibilitis and elemental analysis of C.H.N. and Cobalt. The redox reaction process of Co(SED), Co(SND) and Co(SOPD) complexes was investigated by cyclic voltammetry with glassy carbon electrode in 0.1M TEAP-DMSO. The results of redox reaction process of Co(II) / Co(III) and Co(II) / Co(I) for cobalt(SED) and cobalt(SOPD) complexes and Co(II) / Co(III) process for cobalt(SND) complex are reversible process but Co(II) / Co(I) process of Cobalt(SND) complex is irreversible, and oxygen adduct complexes to quasi reversibly with oxygen should be very closed related to the redox potentials of range, $E_{pc}$ = -0.80~-0.89V and $E_{pa}$ = -0.70~-0.76V.

  • The tetradentate Schiff base ligand, 3,4-bis(salicylidene diimine) toluene, have been prepared by the reaction of salicylaldehyde with 3,4-diaminotoluene by Duff method. The Schiff base ligand reacts with Ni(II), Co(II), and Cu(II) ions to form new complexes, [Ni(o-BSDT)${\cdot}(H_2O)_2$], [Co(o-BSDT)${\cdot}(H_2O)$], and [Cu(o-BSDT)]. It seems that Ni(II) and Ni(II) complexes are hexacoordinated with the Schiff base ligand and two molecules of water, while the Cu(II) complexes are tetracoordinated with the Schiff base. The mole ratio of tetradentate Schiff base ligand to metals was found to be 1 : 1. The redox chemistry of these complexes was investigated by polarography and cyclic voltammetry with glassy carbon electrode in DMSO with 0.1M TEAP${\cdot}$[Ni(o-BSDT)${\cdot}(H_2O)_2$] hav EC reaction mechanisms which undergo a irreversible electron transfer followed by a fast chemical reaction. [Co(o-BSDT)${\cdot}(H_2O)_2$] undergoes a reduction of Co(II) to Co(I) and a oxidation of Co(II) to Co(III), and [Cu(o-BSDT)] undergoes a reduction of Cu(II) to Cu(I).

  • Some vanadium(III) complexes have been prepared from the reaction of VC$l_3$ with N, P, O-donating ligands and characterized by elemental analysis, $^1$H-NMR infrared and UV-Visible spectroscopy. 3,5-Lutidine, 1,2-phenylenediamine, 8-hydroxyquinoline, 9,10-phenanthrenequinone, triphenylphosphine, 1,2-bis(diphenylphosphino)ethane, 1,3-bis(diphenylphosphino)propane and 1,1'-bis(diphenylphosphino)ferrocene were chosen as coordinating ligands. Stretching frequency ${\nu}g$(V-Cl) of complexes appears) at 298∼367 cm-1, which show octahedral geometries. Stretching frequency of ${\nu}g$(V-X) (X = N, P, O) indicates that ligands are coordinated to vanadium(III). Stretching frequency ${\nu}g(C{\equiv}N)$ of acetonitrile in these complexes are characteristically shifted to about 70 c$m^{-1}$ higher compared with that of a free ligand (2260 c$m^{-1}$). Bending frequency of $\delta(C{\equiv}N)$ is also shifted to about 60 c$m^{-1}$ higher compared with that of a free ligand (377 c$m^{-1}$). Finally each vanadium(III) complex showed the following formulation; [VC$l_3$(L)$_2$MeCN] or [VC$l_3$(L-L)MeCN].

  • Metal organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) of copper using three Cu( I ) precursors. (hfac)Cu (VTMS) (hfac= hexafluoroacetylacetonate, VTMS= vinyltrimethylsilane), (hfac)Cu(VTMOS) (VTMOS= vinyltri¬methoxysilane) and (hfac)Cu(A TMS) (A TMS= allyltrimethylsilane) was studied. The thermal stability and the gase¬ous phase reaction mechanism of Cu( I ) precursors were identified using $^1H$-, $^I3C$-NMR and Fourier transform infra¬red spectroscopy. It was found out that thermal stability of liquid phase (hfac)Cu(VTMS) and (hfac)Cu(VTMOS) were better than that of (hfac)Cu(A TMS) using FT - NMR. From in-situ FT - IR experiments, the disproportion reaction of Cu(hfac). the decomposition reaction of Cu(hfac), and cracking of free hfac ligand were observed. Also the effect of gaseous phase reaction on the deposition rates and film properties was investigated. The minimum temperature that deposition of copper films from (hfac)Cu(A TMS) was as low as 60$^{\circ}$C and such a low deposition temperature compared with those of other Cu( I ) precursors is believed to be related with weaken Cu- A TMS bond.

  • Two crystal structures of dehydrated, $Ag^{+}$ and $Ca^{2+}$-exchanged zeolite A treated at $250^{\circ}C$ with 0.15 torr of Cs vapor have been determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction technique in the cubic space group $Pm{\bar\3m$ at $21(1)^{\circ}C$ (a = 12.344(2) $\AA$ and 12.304(2) $\AA$). Their structures were refined to the final error indices, R (weighted), of 0.091 with 180 reflections, and 0.093 with 179 reflections, respectively, for which I > $3\sigma(I).$ In each structure, Cs species are found at four different crystallographic sites: 3 $Cs^{+}$ ions per unit cell are located at 8-ring centers, ca. 6.81∼7.14 $Cs^{+}$ ions are found on opposite 6-rings on threefold axes in the large cavity, ca. 1.93∼2.03 $Cs^{+}$ ions are found on threefold axes in the sodalite unit, and 0.53∼0.66 $Cs^{+}$ ions lie on opposite 4-rings. Also, ca. 4.12∼4.27 Ag atoms are located near the center of the large cavity. In these structures, excess cesium atoms in a unit cell are associated with other $Cs^{+}$ ions on a single threefold axis to form the linear cationic cluster $(Cs_4)^{3+}$. By blocking 8-rings, the $Cs^{+}$ ions may have prevented silver atoms from migrating out of the structure. The Ag atoms are likely to have formed hexasilver clusters at the centers of the large cavities. Each hexasilver cluster is stabilized by coordination to 14 $Cs^{+}$ ions.

  • Hydrazine based reductive dissolution applied on magnetite oxide was investigated. Dissolution of Fe(II) and Fe(III) from magnetite takes place either by protonation, surface complexation, or reduction. Solution containing hydrazine and sulfuric acid provides hydrogen to break bonds between Fe and oxygen by protonation and electrons for the reduction of insoluble Fe(III) to soluble Fe(II) in acidic solution of pH 3. In terms of dissolution rate, numerous transition metal ions were examined and Cu(II) ion was found to be the most effective to speed up the dissolution. During the cycle of Cu(I) ions to Cu(II) ions, the released electron promoted the reduction of Fe(III) and Cu(II) ions returned to Cu(I) ion due to the oxidation of hydrazine. In the experimental results, the addition of a very low amount of cupric ion (about 0.5 mM) to the solution increased the dissolution rate about 40% on average and up to 70% for certain specific conditions. It is confirmed that even though the coordination structure of copper ions with hydrazine is not clear, the $Cu(II)/H^+/N_2H_4$ system is acceptable regarding the dissolution performance as a decontamination reagent.

  • The effect of coated polyester (PET) textiles with metal oxide, chitosan, and copper ion on the antibacterial and antiviral activities was evaluated to investigate the applicability of multi-coated PET textiles as antiviral materials. Compared to coated PETs with a single agent, multi-coated PETs reduced the loading amount of coating materials as well as the contact time with bacteria for a bacterial cell number of < 10 CFU/mL, which was not detectable with the naked eyes. Metal oxides generate reactive oxygen species (ROS) such as free radicals by a catalytic reaction, and copper ions can promote contact killing by the generation of ROS. Chitosan not only enhanced antibacterial activities due to amine groups, but enabled it to be a template to load copper ions. We observed that multi-coated PET textiles have both antibacterial activities for E. coli and S. aureus and antiviral efficiency of more than 99.9% for influenza A (H1N1) and SARS-CoV-2. The multi-coated PET textiles could also be prepared via a roll-to-roll coating process, which showed high antiviral efficacy, demonstrating its potential use in air filtration and antiviral products such as masks and personal protective equipment.

  • In this study, the separation of water/bitumen emulsion was investigated by chemical demulsification method. Motor oils (GS Caltex Deluxe Gold V 7.5W/30, Hyundai gear oil 85W/140) and asphalt (AP-5, KS M 2201, Dongnam Petrochemical MFG. Co.) were used as model oils in the preliminary experiments to effectively remove water from water/bitumen emulsion. The bitumen extracted from Canadian oilsands was used in this study. The water/oil emulsion was not separated without demulsifiers, and Hyundai motor oil showed higher efficiency of water separation at a low concentration of demulsifier compared with that for GS Caltex motor oil. However, as the concentration increased, the efficiency did not rapidly increase compared with that of GS Caltex motor oil. It was highly speculated that the water phase of Hyundai motor oil was not dispersed well compared with that of GS Caltex motor oil because the viscosity of Hyundai motor oil was much higher than that of GS Caltex motor oil. The demulsifier of higher HLB (hydrophilic - lipophilic balance) value had high separation efficiencies in water/oil emulsion. The TWEEN 20 (polyoxyethylene sorbitan monolaurate solution) showed better separation efficiency than other demulsifiers.
