The Effects of Stellate Ganglion Block for Constipation in the Spinal Cord Injured Patients -Report of 2 Cases- (척수손상환자의 변비에 있어서 성상신경절 차단의 효과 -2예 보고-)

  • In the patients having constipation or irritable bowel syndrome, stellate ganglion block is commonly used in many pain clinics because of its excellent effects. But in the case of patients having spinal cord injury complain constipation, its management is very difficult and there is no report about the effects of stellate ganglion block in this case. We experieced good results that stellate ganglion block was very effective in the patients having spinal cord injury complaining severe constipation and other symptoms.

Effect on the Improvement of Intestinal Function and Constipation of Products Made from Chinese Gooseberry (Kiwi) (참다래(키위)로 만든 제품의 장 기능 및 변비 개선에 미치는 효과)

  • In this study, we aimed to investigate the effect of Chinese gooseberry (kiwi)-based products on the improvement of intestinal function and constipation. In this study, 21 participants with no underlying disease and complaining of subjective constipation symptoms were selected. Through a pre-experimental design, the main effects, including the colon stagnation score and colon transit time, were assessed after the consumption of Chinese gooseberry (kiwi)-based products. To evaluate the side effects of this product, a subjective constipation assessment test was performed to analyze the degree of constipation improvement at an individual level. The results for the main effects revealed that the number of constipation groups was statistically significantly decreased, and the colon stagnation score and colon transit time were also reduced. Additionally, the participants' subjective constipation assessment test revealed a significant improvement in both intestinal function and bowel activity before and after the consumption of Chinese gooseberry (kiwi)-based products. Similar to the previously known kelp-, lactobacillus-, and fiber-based products, we showed that Chinese gooseberry (kiwi)-based products exert a significant effect on the improvement of the intestinal function and constipation. Furthermore, the results of this study provide valuable information for the development of healthy food products in the future that can help improve bowel movement. Moreover, Chinese gooseberry (kiwi) used in this study is not a functional food and is easily accessible. However, this study has several limitations as it is based on a pre-experimental design. Therefore, studies on randomized experimental and control groups are needed in the future.

Effect of xylobiose-sugar mixture on defecation frequency and symptoms in young women with constipation (자일로바이오스를 함유한 설탕이 젊은 여성의 변비 개선에 미치는 효과)

  • Purpose: The objective of the study was to investigate the effects of xylobiose-sugar mixture intake on defecation frequency and constipation symptoms in 31 young women with constipation. Methods: Thirty-one subjects were assigned to two groups, and subjects in each group were administered 10 g of a 7% xylobiose-sugar mixture (Experiment 1: XBS, n = 15) or 10 g of a 7% xylobiose-sugar mixture containing coffee mix (Experiment 2: XBS coffee mix, n = 16) twice per day for 6 weeks. During the study, clinical efficacy was assessed by a daily diary record. The subjects recorded their defecation frequency and fecal characteristics. Results: During pretreatment week, mean defecation frequency of XBS subjects was 2.13 times/week, whereas that of XBS coffee mix subjects was 1.56 times/week. The mean defecation frequencies of XBS and XBS coffee mix subjects increased significantly to 3.73 times/week (p < 0.05) and 3.56 times/week by week 6 (p < 0.05), respectively. After treatment with either XBS or XBS coffee mix, patients presented significant improvements in their amounts of stool, feelings of residual stool leftness, and abdominal pain symptoms (p < 0.05). The total constipation scoring system (CSS) for diagnosing constipation symptoms significantly decreased in the XBS group (10.53 score vs 7.22 score) and in the XBS coffee mix group (10.75 score vs 6.51 score) after 6 weeks. Improvement due to intake of 7% xylobiose-containing sugar seemed to last during the experimental period. Conclusion: The addition of approximately 7% xylobiose to commercially available sweeteners has been shown to improve constipation.

Loosing the Constipation by Capsulated Yogurt (캡슐 발효유에 의한 변비 개선)

  • Evaluation of capsulated yogurt for bowels was carried out. To the twenty volunteers who has selfconsciousness of constipation, thc two bottles of capsulated yogurt were applied daily for two weeks. By the results, totally 90% of volunteers replied that their constipation was loosing during the application and 95% after the 2 weeks of stopping the application.

Effects of a Constipation Intervention Program on Inpatients′ Defecation (변비 중재 프로그램이 입원환자의 배변에 미치는 효과)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of a constipation reduction program for inpatients. Method: Subjects were selected in one medical ward of C University Hospital from May, 2001 to November, 2001. Twenty-nine subjects were assigned to an experimental group and 32 subjects to a control group. Data related to the frequency of defecation and to the length and amount of laxative drugs used was collected by a medical record review and data on the degree of constipation was obtained by a self-report using a constipation assessment scale. Results: More than 90% of the subjects admitted in the department of neurology and one third of total subjects presented with activity limitation and about one fourth of the subjects were fed with a nasogastric tube. There was a significant difference in the degree of constipation, frequency of defecation, and the length and amount of laxative drug use between the two groups. Conclusion: This program is effective in inpatient's constipation reduction. Further studies need to apply this program in various clinical environments and properly use this program in different clinical settings.

  • The maintenance of intestinal health is complex and relies on a delicate balance between the diet, the normal microflora and mucosa, including the digestive epithelium and overlying mucus layer. The colorectal mucosa is protected by a visco-elastic mucus gel formed by high molecular mass glycoproteins referred to as mucins. Abnormality of mucin have been identified with colorectal disease. Constipation increases with age, and is more common among women than men in all age groups, e.g. 10% of men and 20% of women in the USA. The aim of the present study was conducted to investigate that the effects of formulation KTG075 from edible plants on intestinal function on mucus secretion, were examined by loperamide-induced constipation method using Sprague Dawley male rats. Epithelial cells of colonic crypt contained more mucus in the KTG075 group compared with those of the control group and the thickness of the mucus layer stained with alcian blue was significantly thicker in KTG075 treated rats compared with in control rats. Mucus production of epithelial cells of crypt and mucus contents at fecal and mucosa surfaces were reduced by loperamide-induced constipation. These results indicates that a poly herbal formulation KTG075 accelerates evacuation and activated intestines.

Preparation of Active Fraction from Radish Water Extracts for Improving the Intestinal Functions and Constipation Activities (무(Raphanuse sativa var. nigra L.) 물 추출물로 부터 장기능 및 변비질환 개선을 위한 활성 분획의 제조)

  • The aim of this study was to develop an activator, 3-10 kDa fraction from radish water extracts, that will improve the intestinal function and bowel movement in the colons. Radish water extracts were investigated for their intestinal function effects according to the charcoal meal transit method, employing Balb/c mice: also, their anti-constipation activities were compared utilizing the loperamide-induced constipation method, employing SD rats. The result suggested that the effects of the charcoal meal transit increased remarkably in radish water extract administrated rats in comparison to loperamide administrated rats. Futhermore, the effects of various solvent extracts of radish on charcoal meal transit in Balb/c mice increased remarkably in radish water fraction administrated rats than in different solvent fraction administrated rats. Radish extraction was tested and isolated into 4 groups: below 3 kDa, 3-10 kDa, 10-300 kDa, and over 300 kDa. 3-10 kDa was the most effective on the intestinal function and bowel movement in the colons; also, 3-10 kDa fraction of radish water extraction was found to be the most effective charcoal meal transit. The dry weight and moisture content of feces remarkedly increased in the 3-10 kDa administrated rats group than in the loperamide only group. Experimental results revealed that 3-10 kDa fraction of radish water extract was the most effective on the intestinal function and bowel movement was the crypt epithelial cells that contained more MUC2 in the 3-10 kDa administrated group than the loperamide only group: in addition, the thickness of mucus layer stained with alcian blue was significantly thicker in 3-10 kDa administrated rats than in loperamide administrated rats. Crypt epithelial cells secreted more MUC2 in the 3-10 kDa administrated group than the loperamide only group and the stained cells clearly showed the MUC2 with antibody Biogenex AM358.

Effects of a Dietary Supplement Consisting of Phaseolus vulgaris and Garcinia cambogia (RCA) on the Lipid Level and Body Weight (Phaseolus vulgaris, Garcinia cambogia (HCA)가 함유된 다이어트 식이 조성물의 체지방 개선 및 체중 변화에 미치는 영향)

  • In this study we examined effects of a new dietary supplement on the lipid level and body weight. The efficacy of this weight-reduction supplement, based on natural ingredients consisting of Phaseolus vulgaris, Garcinia cambogia, and microstalline cellulose, was investigated by randomized, placebo-controlled double-blind study. The 36 subjects were assigned evenly into weight-reduction supplemented (Active) and placebo groups (Placebo). The supplement could reduce the absorption of different types of sugar from the gastro-intestinal tract. A significant difference in weight reduction was shown in the active group (3.5 kg). Body composition measurements indicated that about 34% of fat loss in the active group could be achieved. These findings suggest that this dietary supplement could reduce body weight and fat gains, and its inhibitory effects might lead to obesity improvement.

초고속 카메라를 이용한 toilet의 flushing에 의한 오염 분석과 수치 모델링

  • 배변 후 toilet flushing 시 다량의 세균을 포함한 물방울들이 화장실 곳곳으로 퍼지는 현상이 있다. 이러한 현상을 방지하기 위해 변기 뚜껑에 자기 세정 효과를 갖는 초발수 표면을 위해 플라즈마를 이용한 표면 처리가 시도되고 있으며, 이 연구의 일환으로 flushing시의 변기내의 유동 분석을 초고속 카메라를 이용하여 수행하였다. Toilet flushing 시 물 튀김 현상은 육안으로는 잘 관찰하기 어렵지만 최고 1000 frame/sec의 속도를 갖는 CCD camera를 이용하여 정량적으로 물 튀김에 의한 오염 가능성을 촬영 분석하였다, 두 번째로 소변 시의 변기 표면에서의 튀김현상을 분석하기 위하여 소변의 발사각도 및 속도를 가장 실제와 유사한 조건으로 설정하고 이를 상용 전산 유체 역학 소프트웨어인 CFD- ACE+의 자유 표면 계산 기능과 두 가지 유체(액체 및 기체)의 혼합 계산 모델을 사용한 계산 결과와 비교 하였다. 그 결과 변기 표면의 표면장력을 아주 작게 설정한 경우(작은 접촉각, 친수성)에는 중력의 영향을 고려하였음에도 불구하고 소변이 변기에 충돌 후 상부로 상당부분 튀어 올라가는 결과를 얻었다. 여러 가지 각도와 발사 속도, 실제의 인체와 유사한 발사 부위의 형상 변화로 인한 유체 표면의 난류 발생과 이에 따른 변기 표면 충돌 현상 변화 등을 수치적으로 고찰하였다. 한 예로 5.6 mm 직경의 노즐에서 소변이 나오는 경우를 발사 속도 3 m/s, 각도 $10^{\circ}$로 주고 중력을 고려하여 10초 동안을 계산하면, 방뇨 시 toilet bowl 내부에서의 물의 유동과 toilet 표면을 맞고 튀기는 현상을 그림 1과 같이 볼 수 있었다.

Effect of Drinking Fermented Milk on the Improvement of Defecation in Constipated Female Students (농후 발효유에 의한 여대생의 변비개선 효과)

  • The aim of this study was to investigate the effect d concentrated fermented milk on the improvement of defecation in female students with constipation. This yogurt was fermented with Bifidobacterium, L. acidophilus, and S. thermophilus and supplemented with oligosaccharides, dietary fiber, and yeast and mushroom extracts. 44 female students with constipation were sampled as subjects and fed 150ml fermented milk per day for 2 weeks period. After each defecation, the subjects were examined for the status of stool evacuation by questionnaires. The frequency of stool evacuation, fecal amount, time spending for evacuation, fecal color and shape, and refreshing feeling after evacuation were remarkably improved after ingestion of fermented milk for 2 weeks. These effects were greater in the heavy constipation group than in the mild group. The fecal odor did rot decrease significantly after 2 weeks of intake of fermented milk, but the odor thended to decrease after the intake of fermented milk These results indicated that the ingestion of concentrated fermented milk is effective to improve the constipation.
