Effectiveness of Beam-propagation-method Simulations for the Directional Coupling of Guided Modes Evaluated by Fabricating Silica Optical-waveguide Devices (광도파로 모드 간의 방향성 결합현상에 대한 빔 진행 기법 설계의 효율성 및 실리카 광도파로 소자 제작을 통한 평가)

  • A directional coupler device, one of the fundamental components of photonic integrated circuits, distributes optical power by evanescent field coupling between two adjacent optical waveguides. In this paper, the design process for manufacturing a directional coupler device is reviewed, and the accuracy of the design results, as seen from the characteristics of the actual fabricated device, is confirmed. When designing a directional coupler device through a two-dimensional (2D) beam-propagation-method (BPM) simulation, an optical structure is converted to a two-dimensional planar structure through the effective index method. After fabricating the directional coupler device array, the characteristics are measured. To supplement the 2D-BPM results that are different from the experimental results, a 3D-BPM simulation is performed. Although 3D-BPM simulation requires more computational resources, the simulation result is closer to the experimental results. Furthermore, the waveguide core refractive index used in 3D-BPM is adjusted to produce a simulation result consistent with the experimental results. The proposed design procedure enables accurate design of directional coupler devices, predicting the experimental results based on 3D-BPM.

  • We have demonstrated a -8 dB additional reduction in the intensity sidelobe of an apodized-interaction-strength guide-wave acousto-optic filter with a center passband of 1551.6 nm. Acoustic-intensity weighting was achieved by launching a surface acoustic wave (SAW) beam in a straight acoustic waveguide, and gradually transferring this SAW intensity to the active device, and back out, by evanescent-wave coupling across a 50 !lm barrier over a 19 rom interaction length. The intensity sidelobe was -4.27 dB for an unapodized filter with abmpt onset and cutoff of the interaction, but sidelobes were reduced to at most -12.68 dB for a SAW intensity with raised-cosine weighting. The RF driving power was 17.78 mW. A linear tuning rate of 8.86 nmIMHz and a spectral width of -1.7 nm were demonstrated. rated.

A novel vertical directional coupler with polarization independent very short coupling lengths (편광에 무관한 매우 짧은 결합 길이를 가지는 새로운 수직 방향성 결합기)

  • We propose a novel vertical directional coupler with polarization independent very short coupling lengths using the double-sided deep-ridge waveguide structure which could be implemented using double-sided process to polarization insensitive deep-ridge waveguide structures and investigate the effect of various structure parameters on the coupling length. Variation of coupling length for the variation of the waveguide width is smaller than that for the variation of the core thickness. Coupling length decreases as the inner cladding layer thickness and the core thickness decrease. The waveguide width with the polarization independent coupling length decreases as the inner cladding layer thickness decreases for the same core thickness and the core thickness decreases for the same inner cladding layer thickness.

  • 복합재료를 이용하여 부품제작을 한 후 어떠한 결합방법을 채택할 것인가를 결정할 때 고려해 야할 점을 기계적 결합법과 접착결합법을 비교하여 검토하였다. 기계적 결합은 하중을 많이 받고 분해 및 결합이 자주 예상되는 부품에 채택해야 할 것이며 복합재료의 특성을 고려하여 보강 시에 부착하는 평판의 섬유방향은 가급적 드릴구멍주위를 부드럽게 하여 응력집중을 낮출 수 있으며 하중의 종류에 따라 적층의 섬유방향을 조절함으로서 응력집중을 조절할 수 있다. 드릴 구멍 주위인 파손은 평판의 폭과 구멍의 직경등이 크게 작용함으로 강도해석을 할 경우에 응력 해석을 한 후 허용응력등을 결정해야할 것이다. 접착졀합법은 작업이 간단하나 신뢰도가 떨어지 므로 하중을 많이 받는 구조물에의 사용에 주의를 요하며 설계방법도 매우 다양하게 제안되어 있어 선택함에 있어 하중 환경조건등을 점검해야할 것이다. 접착결합법은 드릴구멍같은 불연속 성을 갖지 않기 때문에 응력집중이 생기지 않으나 접착층의 길이등 기하학적 형상에 따라 다르게 나타남으로 잡착층의 분리가 일어나지 않도록 설계되어야 한다. 특히 복합재료의 이방성인 성 질을 감안하여 접착층에 이웃하는 피접착층의 섬유방향에 주의해야 하며 층간응력이 파손에 미 치는 영향을 고려하여 설계에 임해야 한다.

Design and Fabrication of Forward -3㏈ Directional Coupler Using Asymmetrical Coupled Lines with Mentalization Thickness (도체두께를 가진 비대칭 결합선로를 이용한 정방향 -3㏈ 방향성 결합기의 설계 및 제작)

  • In this paper, forward-wave -3㏈ directional coupler with finite-thickness conductor and asymmetrical coupled lines are designed and experimentally verified using mode-matching based design methodology. Most of studies published in the literatures about the coupled lines are mainly concentrated on the adjustment of coupling amount by changing various geometric configurations. The analysis results in this paper show that thicker metalization requires reduced coupler length in the forward-wave directional coupler composed of asymmetrical coupled lines. Several forward-wave directional -3 ㏈ couplers with finite metalization thickness composed of asymmetrical coupled microstrip lines have been designed in the 5 ㎓ based on proposed design method. The measured data show -4.05㏈∼-4.09㏈ coupling at center frequency which is very closed to design value. The tight coupling has been implemented with accurate design methodology which take mentalization thickness into account.

  • We show that both cross and bar states with very high extinction ratios larger than 30 dB can be obtained in ultra short (< $100{\mu}m$) two-section vertical directional couplers. Based on the calculations of various possible combinations of the refractive indices of waveguides in each section using the improved coupled mode theory and beam propagation method, the guidelines for the design of ultra short two-section vertical directional couplers are presented to obtain both cross and bar states with high extinction ratios larger than 30 dB at the ends of section 1 and section 2, respectively.

  • We propose a novel vertical directional coupler switch using a vertical directional coupler with polarization independent coupling lengths employing the doublesided deep-ridge waveguide structure. This switch is composed of a switching operation induced section with symmetric structures and an extinction ratio enhanced section with asymmetric structures. We present design methods and examples for this switch with very short lengths and very high extinction ratios larger than 30 dB for both TE and TM modes in cases of both cross and bar states.

  • We show that both cross and bar states with high extinction ratios larger than 30dB can be achieved at eh same ends of ultra-short fused vertical directional coupler switches with two sections by changing the refractive indices of cores and inner cladding layers less than 1%. Based on the calculation of extinction ratios of cross state and bar state for various refractive index and thickness of inner cladding layer and core using the improved coupled mode theory and beam propagation method, the guidelines for design to achieve large tolerances in refractive indices of core and inner cladding layer in fused vertical directional coupler switches are presented.

일치환된 방향족 고리의 NO2+ 치환반응에서의 반응성과 지향성에 관한 연구

  • 본 연구에서는 일치환된 방향족 화합물의 $NO_2{^+}$ 치환반응에서의 반응성 (reactivity)과 지향성 (regioselectivity)에 대해 분석하였다. 기존의 연구에 따르면, 방향족 고리와 치환체 사이의 ${\sigma}$ 결합을 통한 유발효과와 ${\pi}$ 결합을 통한 공명효과로 인해 벤젠 고리의 전자 분포가 증가하게 되면 반응성이 증가하는 것으로 알려져 있다. 또한 반응중간생성물인 탄소양이온의 안정성을 통해 지향성을 확인할 수 있는 것으로 알려진 바가 있다. 이에 따라, 본 연구에서는 반응성과 지향성이 실험적으로 잘 알려진 7가지의 치환기 (OH, $OCH_3$, $CH_3$, Cl, COOH, CN, $NO_2$)를 선정하여 DFT functional인 B3LYP를 사용하여 natural bond orbital (NBO) 계산을 하였고, 각각의 일치환된 벤젠 고리가 갖는 전자 분포를 ${\sigma}$${\pi}$ 전자로 나누어서 보기로 했다. 그 결과, 일치환된 방향족 고리 치환반응의 반응성과 지향성은 ${\sigma}$ 결합을 통한 유발효과에 의해서는 영향을 받지 않고, 공명 효과로 인한 반응물의 ${\pi}$ 전자 분포에 의해 결정되는 것을 확인할 수 있었다. 이외에도 반응성을 비교 하기 위해 친핵체로 작용하는 일치환된 방향족 고리의 highest occupied molecular orbital(HOMO) 에너지와 친전자체인 $NO_2{^+}$의 lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) 에너지의 차이를 비교하였으며, 친핵체의 HOMO 에너지가 높을수록 반응성이 커짐을 알 수 있었다.
