  • As we are trying to in-situ treat (purify or immobilize) heavy metals or radionuclides in groundwater, one of the geochemical factors to be necessarily considered is the value of oxidation/reduction potential (ORP) of the groundwater. A biogeochemical impact on the characteristic ORP change of groundwater taken from the KAERI underground was observed as a function of time by adding electron-donor (lactate), electron-acceptor (sulfate), and indigenous bacteria in a laboratory condition. There was a slight increase of Eh (slow oxidation) of the pure groundwater with time under a $N_2$-filled glove-box. However, most of groundwaters that contained lactate, sulfate or bacteria showed Eh decrease (reduction) characteristics. In particular, when 'Baculatum', a local indigenous sulfate-reducing bacterium, was injected into the KAERI groundwater, it turned to become a highly-reduced one having a decreased Eh to around -500 mV. Although the sulfate-reducing bacterium thus has much greater ability to reduce groundwater than other metal-reducing bacteria, it surely necessitated some dissolved ferrous-sulfate and finally generated sulfide minerals (e.g., mackinawite), which made a prediction for subsequent reactions difficult. As a result, the ORP of groundwater was largely affected even by a slight injection of nutrient without bacteria, indicating that oxidation state, solubility and sorption characteristics of dissolved contaminants, which are affected by the ORP, could be changed and controlled through in-situ biostimulation method.

  • The primary objective of pulp treatment is to maintain the integrity and health of the oral tissues. The most important and difficult aspect of pulp therapy is determining the health of the pulp, or its stage of inflammation, so that a decision can be made regarding the best form of treatment. Immature permanent teeth are good candidates for many pulp healing procedures, due to their rich blood supply, which is believed to enhance the pulp's ability to react successfully to various insults. Healing was considered to have taken place when the tooth fulfilled the following criteria: 1. Abscence of clinical symtoms 2. Radiographic evidence of dentin bridge formation 3. No intrapulpal or periapical pathosis was evident radiographically 4. Continued root development and closure of the apex in immature teeth 5. Normal dentin apposition in mature teeth 6. Positive response to electrical pulp test This presents a report of cases in which immature permanent teeth, pulp-exposed by caries or trauma, was treated successfully by partial pulpotomy.

  • For the first step to develop a reference disposal container of spent fuel to be used in a deep geological repository, this paper examined safe dimensions of the disposal container on the points of nuclear criticality and radiation safety and mechanical structural safety and provided basic information for dimensioning the container and configuration of the container components, and establishing the favorable and safe disposal conditions. When the safety factor for stress due to the external loads (hydrostatic and swelling pressure) is taken as 2.0, the safe diameter of the filler material to provide enough container strength under the assumed external loads is found to be 112cm with 13cm spacing between inner baskets in PWR container. Also the thickness of the thinner section between the fuel basket and the surface of the cast insert is determined to be 150 mm. Regarding these dimensions of the container, the PWR fuel container is sketched to accommodate 4 square assemblies or 297 CANDU fuel 297 bundles (33 circle tubes x 9 stacks). However the top and bottom parts need to be checked again through the detail radiation shielding analysis with respects to the emplacement position and handling processes of the disposal container.

  • An analysis has been performed to estimate the additional number of workers and the additional collective dose in man-cSv which would be required, nuclear industry-wide as a result of reducing individual dose limit. This analysis can be extended to the reduction in the dose limits recommended by ICRP Publ.60 and BEIR V report as well as the proposed dose limits by regulatory authorities. An industry-wide database was employed in the analysis based on a summary of industry-wide occupational radiation exposure compiled by the Korea Radioisotope Association. Correlation model was employed to compute the affects of setting specific annual individual dose limits. In this study, we have addressed worker non-productivity while in the radiation environment on a parametric or 'sensitivity analysis' basis. This alleviates the need for developing such data underlying a summation of many individual tasks at many nuclear facilities. It has the advantage that very low non-productivity assumptions can readily be defended as conservative, in that it is difficult to approach such low worker non-productivity factors even in the best of environments in any industry. On a per facility basis, for calendar year 1997, the number of workers required would be increased from 231 workers to 269 workers and collective man-cSv dose would be also increased by approximately fourteen percent if the individual dose limit was reduced to 2 cSv/y and an individual worker non-productivity fraction of 0.1 is assumed.

  • A radio-tracer experiment was performed in a greenhouse to investigate the effectiveness of the simultaneous application of K and Ca as a countermeasure for reducing the radiocaesium and radiostrontium uptake by rice. Paddy soil (loam of pH 6.5) in soil boxes was spiked with $^{137}Cs$ and $^{85}Sr$, and treated with K and Ca in the forms of KCl and $Ca(OH)_2$, respectively, at agrochemical grades before transplanting. For the seeds of the control plants, soil-to-plant transfer factors (TF, $m^2\;kg^{-1}-dry$) of $^{137}Cs$ and $^{85}Sr$ were $7.4{\times}10^{-5}$ and $2.1{\times}10^{-4}$, respectively, whereas the corresponding values for the straws were $2.6{\times}10^{-4}$ and $2.2{\times}10^{-2}$, respectively. The TF values of $^{137}Cs$ and $^{85}Sr$ kept decreasing as the level of the simultaneous application of K and Ca (K/Ca, $g\;m^{-2}$) increased up to 33.6/322 and 48.0/460, respectively. The maximum rate of the decrease was around 60% for both radionuclides. Nearly 60% reduction in the TF value of $^{85}Sr$ was observed even at the dosage of 33.6/322, which was considered the optimum dosage based on crop productivity as well as reduction in the radiocaesium and radiostrontium uptake by rice. The optimum dosage may depend on various factors so further experiments need to be made for many different conditions.

  • In the case of $^{123}I$ from the $^{124}Te$(p,2n)reaction, the radionuclidic impurity is the high-energy gamma-emitting $^{124}I$, which interferes greatly with nuclear medicine images. The choice of a collimator can affect the quality of clinical SPECT images of [I-123]MIBG, [I-123] ${\beta}$-CIT, or [I-123]IPT. The tradeoffs that two different collimators make among spatial resolution, sensitivity, and scatter were studied by imaging a line source at 5cm, 10cm, 15cm distance using a number of plexiglass sheets between source and collimator, petri dish, two-dimensional Hoffman brain phantom, Jaszczak phantom, and three-dimensional Hoffman brain phantom after filling with $^{123}I$. (FWHM, FWTM, Sensitivity) for low-energy ultrahigh-resolution parallel - hole (LEUHRP) collimator and medium- energy general - purpose (MEGP) collimator were measured as (9.27mm, 61.27mm, $129CPM/{\mu}Ci$) and (10.53mm, 23.17mm, $105CPM/{\mu}Ci$), respectively. The image quality of two-dimensional Hoffman brain phantom with LEUHRP looked better than the one with MEGP. However, the image quality of Jaszczak phantom and three-dimensional Hoffman brain phantom with LEUHRP looked much worse than the one with MEGP because of scatter contributions in three-dimensional imaging situation. The results suggest that the MEGP is preferable to LEUHRP for three-dimensional imaging studies of [I-123]MIBG, [I-123] ${\beta}$-CIT, or [I-123]IPT.

  • Nuclear emergency planning is to plan sheltering, evacuation and iodine prophylaxis for the residents living in the area where the emergency plan is needed, the area is confirmed based on the dose assessment using the source-term through an accident analysis and the data measured from meteorological tower. In this study, the does change before and after protective measures was assessed stochastically based on the one year meteorological data in the condition of the maximum hypothetical accident which can be considered at the research reactor 'HANARO', and the optimized protective measures were derived based on the reference levels defined as a residual dose by ICRP 2007 recommendation which can be applied in a emergency exposure situation. The optimized protective measures for the HANARO in the maximum hypothetical accident were the evacuation to radius 300 m, the sheltering from 300 m to 800 m, the iodine prophylaxis only for the emergency workers under the protective measures for non emergency workers.

  • Currently the fish aquaculture industry of Korea is focused on the mass culture of flatfish (Paralichthys olivaceus) and and rockfish (Sebastes schlegeli) with completely controlled culture techniques. Recently, there has been considerable interest in new species development, such as the starry flounder (Platichthys stellatus). The value of starry flounder (Platichthys stellatus) as a raw fish increases with time because it is tasty, light, and bouncy. In this paper, the growth characteristics dependent on the LED wavelengths and the optimal growth conditions of the starry flounder were studied. In these experiments 4 different kinds of LED lighting, configurations were designed and prepared using red, green, blue and white, respectively. The fish aquaculture experiments were conducted over 10 weeks in four fish tanks, each installed with a different color of LED lighting. 10 starry flounders of 13 ~ 17g were placed into each tank. The effects of each color of light on the growth rate of the starry flounders were then examined. As a result, the starry flounders under the green LED lighting showed the highest growth rate, followed by the white, red, and blue LED lighting. Based on these results, a green light provides a suitable breeding environment for the starry flounder.

  • Even though the wedge factor was defined by ICRU, RTPS uses other definition different from the wedge factor to consider the wedge effect to correct dose. Because the factors with different concept are defined in a very different way, replacement of different factor could make severe error of dose and is unacceptable because their values are very different from each other. Radiotherapy machine installed in department includes physical wedges and function of dynamic wedge by upper jaws, and Eclipse and Pinnacle$^{3}$ such as RTPS are used. The wedge factors, relative wedge output factors and wedge field output factors of physical wedges and dynamic wedges were measured by an ionization chamber in water phantom. They are analyzed and compared in according to wedge position, field size, wedge angle, X-ray quality, measurement condition. Wedge factor, relative wedge output factors and wedge field output factors of dynamic wedges comparing physical wedges have an effect of several factors. Main factors effecting to the factors of dynamic wedges were field size and wedge angle. Beam quality of X-ray introduces a few effect to the factors. Because the factors related to wedge and defined with different concepts are different from each other, to reduce dose error it should be input by values proper to RTPS.

  • We investigate the effect of soil-structure interaction (SSI) on the response of LNG storage tanks to vertical seismic excitation depending on the type of foundation. An LNG storage tank with a diameter of 71 m on a clay layer with a thickness of 30 m upon bedrock, was selected as an example. The nonlinear behavior of the soil was considered in an equivalent linear method. Four types of foundation were considered, including shallow, piled raft, and pile foundations (surface and floating types). In addition, the effect of soil compaction within the group pile on the seismic response of the tank was investigated. KIESSI-3D, an analysis package in the frequency domain, was used to study the SSI and the stress in the outer tank was calculated. Based on an analysis of the numerical results, we arrived at three main conclusions: (1) for a shallow foundation, the vertical stress in the outer tank is less than the fixed base response due to the SSI effect; (2) for foundations supported by piles, the vertical stress can be greater than the fixed base stress due to the increase in the vertical impedance due to the piles and the decrease in radiation damping; and (3) soil compaction had a miniscule impact on the seismic response of the outer tank.
